Four ASTM product standards share the family. ASTM B407, Standard Specification for Nickel-Iron-Chromium Alloy Seamless Pipe and Tube, governs UNS N08800, N08810 and N08811, so every ASTM B407 seamless Incoloy pipe on a line list belongs to the 800 group. ASTM B423 governs UNS N08825 in three supply conditions, and an ASTM B423 seamless Incoloy pipe item should state which of them is wanted. ASTM B983 governs UNS N09925, whose only listed condition is solution annealed plus precipitation hardened, and it is quoted without an ASME number. ASTM A312 lists UNS N08028 and UNS N08926 by UNS number and requires both to be furnished solution treated, so Incoloy 028 and Alloy 926 items are ordered to it in that condition. ASME SB-407, ASME SB-423 and ASME SA-312 are the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code counterparts of B407, B423 and A312. None of the four prints a trade name: each alloy is identified by its UNS number, and that number is entered on the certificate.

B407, B423 and B983 each call up ASTM B829, Standard Specification for General Requirements for Nickel and Nickel Alloys Seamless Pipe and Tube, and what it adds is mostly procedure. It defines a lot as pipe of one heat, one nominal size and one condition, never exceeding 20 000 lb (9100 kg), describes how the hydrostatic and electric tests are run, and lists the marking each length carries. Where a product standard prints its own clause, that clause takes precedence, which is why the 800 group follows B407 rather than B829 for cut length and straightness. ASTM A312 calls up ASTM A999 instead, so Incoloy 028 and Alloy 926 seamless pipes made to A312 follow A999, not B829.

Every length passes either a hydrostatic test or a nondestructive electric test, at our choice unless the order names one, and each lot gets a chemical analysis and, wherever the condition carries strength minimums, a tension test. The 800H and 800HT grades add one grade-specific test per lot, for grain size, while Incoloy 028 and Alloy 926 add a flattening test on pipes from each lot. For Incoloy 028 and Alloy 926 seamless pipe of NPS 10 and larger, the purchaser may, with our agreement, waive the hydrostatic test in favor of a system test, and those lengths are marked NH. Results go on an EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) certificate, and third-party inspection is available on request.

Seven Incoloy Grades in Seamless Pipe Form

The 800 group shares one standard and divides by carbon control, aluminum and titanium control and heat treatment, while 825 and 925 move to a chemistry bearing molybdenum and copper for corrosive media. Incoloy 028 and Alloy 926, both listed by UNS number in ASTM A312, also carry molybdenum and copper, with nitrogen added in 926. Every seamless Incoloy alloy pipe grade has its own page with chemistry, strength minimums and dimensional data.

Incoloy 800 Seamless Pipes
UNS N08800 / W.Nr. 1.4876

Incoloy 800 Seamless Pipe

Incoloy 800 resists oxidation and carburization. ASTM B407 places it in general service, without the grain-size rule or minimum heat-treatment temperature of the creep grades. Strength minimums for UNS N08800 seamless pipe, or seamless WNR 1.4876 pipe, follow its condition: cold-worked annealed or hot finished. See Incoloy 800 seamless pipes.

Incoloy 800H Seamless Pipes
UNS N08810 / W.Nr. 1.4958

Incoloy 800H Seamless Pipe

Incoloy 800H keeps the 800 chemistry but adds a carbon minimum, and B407 requires a minimum final heat-treatment temperature and a controlled grain size, fitting it for service that needs creep and rupture resistance. European drawings list it as seamless WNR 1.4958 pipe. Details are on Incoloy 800H seamless pipes.

Incoloy 800HT Seamless Pipes
UNS N08811 / W.Nr. 1.4959

Incoloy 800HT Seamless Pipe

Incoloy 800HT narrows the 800H chemistry: B407 raises its carbon, aluminum and titanium minimums and sets a window for aluminum plus titanium combined. Its minimum final heat-treatment temperature is higher than that of 800H; the grain-size rule and strength minimums are shared. UNS N08811 and its tests are covered on Incoloy 800HT seamless pipes.

Incoloy 825 Seamless Pipes
UNS N08825 / W.Nr. 2.4858

Incoloy 825 Seamless Pipe

Incoloy 825 adds molybdenum and copper for resistance to pitting, chloride stress-corrosion cracking and reducing acids such as sulfuric and phosphoric. ASTM B423 supplies it hot-finished annealed, cold-worked annealed or as hot-forming quality, which is held to chemistry and surface inspection only. Strength rows by condition are listed on Incoloy 825 seamless pipes.

Incoloy 925 Seamless Pipes
UNS N09925

Incoloy 925 Seamless Pipe

Incoloy 925 is the precipitation-hardenable member, sharing the nickel, chromium, molybdenum and copper limits of 825 with a higher titanium range plus aluminum. ASTM B983 lists it solution annealed plus precipitation hardened, with a hardness ceiling beside its strength minimums. Sour gas well piping is a typical duty; see Incoloy 925 seamless pipes.

Incoloy 028 Seamless Pipes
UNS N08028 / W.Nr. 1.4563

Incoloy 028 Seamless Pipe

Incoloy 028 is a nickel-iron-chromium alloy with molybdenum and copper, listed by UNS number in ASTM A312 / ASME SA-312 as UNS N08028 and supplied solution treated. Its low carbon keeps it resistant to sensitization during welding, and phosphoric and sulfuric acid lines are typical duties. Details are on Incoloy 028 seamless pipes.

Alloy 926 Seamless Pipes
UNS N08926 / W.Nr. 1.4529

Alloy 926 Seamless Pipe

Alloy 926 is a high-molybdenum austenitic alloy with nitrogen and copper, listed by UNS number in ASTM A312 / ASME SA-312 as UNS N08926. It resists pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking in chloride media, suiting seawater, firewater and flue gas desulfurization lines. Chemistry and sizes are on Alloy 926 seamless pipes.

Seamless Incoloy Pipe Sizes, Ends and Ordering Basis

Pipe items in the B407, B423 and B983 grades are ordered by nominal pipe size and schedule, the basis each of those standards sets for pipe, and B407 adds a nonmandatory table, published for information only, of the schedules it regards as regularly available for cold-drawn pipe. Across those grades the outside diameter runs up to 457 mm, the wall up to 65 mm and the cut length up to 18 m, and seamless 1.4958 pipe, the 800H grade, is the one among them made beyond that diameter. Alloy 926 is made from 6 to 457 mm outside diameter, with walls from 1 to 65 mm and lengths up to 18 m, while Incoloy 028 is made to the outside diameter, wall thickness and length on each order; both A312 grades can be ordered by nominal pipe size and schedule or by outside diameter and wall. Permitted variations come from B407's own cold-finished table for the 800 group and from the ASTM B829 tables for 825; for 925, B983 prints its own tables for hot-finished pipe and sends precipitation hardened or cold-worked pipe to B829, and for Incoloy 028 and Alloy 926 they come from ASTM A312 and ASTM A999. Ends are plain, cut and deburred, and an order for one of the three B407 grades may instead call for threaded ends or ends beveled for welding, with the details stated. Random lengths are agreed before production. For the B407, B423 and B983 grades, items dimensioned by outside diameter and wall rather than by schedule are usually better placed with our Incoloy seamless tubes.

Industrial Applications of Seamless Incoloy Piping

Incoloy seamless pipes carry heat, oxidizing or carburizing gas, acids, chlorides and sour gas. The sectors below use them in the grades named.

Power Generation duty for Incoloy seamless pipe

Power Generation

High-temperature heat exchangers and steam generator lines in power plants run in UNS N08810 seamless pipe, the 800H grade, because their design depends on creep and rupture resistance.

Chemical and Petrochemical Processing duty for Incoloy seamless pipe

Chemical and Petrochemical Processing

Transfer lines for sulfuric or phosphoric acid and other aggressive chemicals use seamless 2.4858 pipe or Incoloy 028, while hot process streams that oxidize or carburize ordinary piping are routed through seamless 1.4876 pipe.

Oil and Gas duty for Incoloy seamless pipe

Oil and Gas

Sour gas wells with high hydrogen sulfide levels take the 825 and 925 grades, and 925 is chosen when the line needs its precipitation hardened condition and higher strength minimums.

Industrial Furnaces duty for Incoloy seamless pipe

Industrial Furnaces

Radiant tubes and muffle components inside heat-treating furnaces are made from seamless WNR 1.4876 pipe, which withstands constant flame exposure and heavy thermal loads cycle after cycle.

Marine and Offshore duty for Incoloy seamless pipe

Marine and Offshore

Seawater piping and offshore platform equipment use seamless WNR 2.4858 pipe, or Alloy 926 for firewater lines, both chosen for resistance to the pitting and crevice corrosion that salt spray and seawater bring.

Pollution Control duty for Incoloy seamless pipe

Pollution Control

Scrubber systems that remove sulfur dioxide from industrial exhaust run wet and acidic, so their piping is specified in UNS N08825 seamless pipe to survive the gas cleaning process.

Frequently Asked Questions About Incoloy Seamless Pipes

Can one ASTM standard cover a mixed order of Incoloy grades?

No. A mixed order can run under four product standards: the 800, 800H and 800HT items are ASTM B407 seamless Incoloy pipe, the 825 items are ASTM B423 seamless Incoloy pipe, the 925 items follow ASTM B983 and the Incoloy 028 and Alloy 926 items follow ASTM A312. One offer and one certificate set name the standard against every item.

What belongs on each line of an inquiry for these pipes?

Give the UNS number, standard, nominal pipe size, schedule, condition and cut or random length. For UNS N08800 seamless pipe, state cold-worked annealed or hot finished, because the strength minimums follow that choice. For 825, say whether hot-forming quality is wanted. Add the quantity per item and any third-party inspection the project requires.

Which tests does every pipe length receive, and which are made once per lot?

One test is per length, the rest per lot. A hydrostatic test holds pressure for at least five seconds; the electric alternative is an eddy current or ultrasonic examination. Per lot come a chemical analysis, a tension test except on hot-forming quality 825, a grain-size test on 800H and 800HT, and a flattening test on Incoloy 028 and Alloy 926.

Should a process line be specified in 800H or 825?

Let the service decide. Heat with creep and rupture loading points to seamless 1.4958 pipe, the 800H grade with its grain-size control. Sulfuric or phosphoric acid, chlorides and sour gas point to seamless 2.4858 pipe, the 825 grade, whose molybdenum and copper carry that resistance.

What paperwork travels with each shipment?

An EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) certificate covers every item, giving heat number, standard, condition and test results. Raw material certificates, heat treatment charts and dimensional records accompany it. B407, B423 and B983 each leave certification to the order, so we include it as standard and keep mixed shipments uniform.

What is the largest pipe size made in the Incoloy family?

Among grades with a fixed size range, 800H goes largest, up to 508 mm outside diameter, while 800, 800HT, 825, 925 and Alloy 926 reach 457 mm. These six run to a 65 mm wall and 18 m cut lengths. Incoloy 028 is made to the dimensions on each order, and every combination is confirmed in the quotation.

Why is grain size tested on 800H but not on 800?

Because ASTM B407 sets a grain-size requirement for 800H and 800HT and none for 800. UNS N08810 seamless pipe must be annealed to a controlled, coarse grain size, checked once per lot, and seamless WNR 1.4958 pipe also carries a minimum final heat-treatment temperature. Incoloy 800 has neither rule, since B407 places it in general service.
