Caustic Soda and Chlorine Production
Chlor-alkali plants use this pipe for caustic soda and chlorine production, running the sodium hydroxide piping around their evaporators, with each line ordered by NPS, schedule and condition.
ASTM B161 / ASME SB-161 / UNS N02200 / W.Nr. 2.4066
To ASTM B161 / ASME SB-161, Thaida Stainless Steel Manufacturing (Thailand) Co., Ltd. produces Nickel 200 seamless pipes in commercially pure nickel with 99.0% nickel minimum, designated UNS N02200 and W.Nr. 2.4066. The pipe is cold-worked at our Ban Bueng, Chonburi plant and delivered annealed or stress-relieved, the choice that, together with outside diameter, sets its minimum strength. It is one of the grades in our nickel alloy seamless pipes range, and our office in Bang Phli, Samut Prakan handles orders and certificates.

EN 10204 3.1 certificate / 3.2 on request
Condition and pipe size are the two entries that decide most of what an ASTM B161 Nickel 200 seamless pipe has to meet. The table shows how we quote both, next to the range we produce.
ASTM B161, the Standard Specification for Nickel Seamless Pipe and Tube, covers nickel (UNS N02200) and low-carbon nickel (UNS N02201) as cold-worked seamless pipe and tube. ASME SB-161 is the related specification for Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code applications, so an ASME SB-161 UNS N02200 seamless pipe is ordered against the same UNS number. That number is the designation marked on the pipe and stated on the certificate, while Nickel 200 stays the commercial name. Tube under the same standard is sized by outside diameter and nominal or minimum wall rather than by pipe size and schedule, and condenser and heat-exchanger bundles are served by our Nickel 200 seamless tubes.
Chemical analysis and a tension test are each made once per lot. Every piece in the lot is then either hydrostatically tested or examined by a nondestructive electric test, eddy current or ultrasonic; the hydrostatic test covers pipe of 1/8 in. (3 mm) OD and larger with walls of 0.015 in. (0.38 mm) and over. ASTM B161 makes a manufacturer's certification and a report of the test results mandatory, and we issue both as an EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) certificate. Tests you want to witness at the mill are named on the purchase order, and third-party inspection is available on request.
Table 2 of ASTM B161 lists seven elements for this grade. Nickel is a minimum, 99.0%, determined arithmetically by difference, and the other six are maximums. The carbon limit of 0.15% is the one entry that separates N02200 from low-carbon nickel. Each heat analysis of a UNS N02200 seamless pipe is read against these rows on the certificate.

| Element | Limit per ASTM B161 / ASME SB-161 (%) |
|---|---|
| Ni (Nickel) | 99.0 min |
| Cu (Copper) | 0.25 max |
| Fe (Iron) | 0.40 max |
| Mn (Manganese) | 0.35 max |
| C (Carbon) | 0.15 max |
| Si (Silicon) | 0.35 max |
| S (Sulfur) | 0.01 max |
Table 1 of ASTM B161 gives this grade three rows of minimums, selected first by condition and then, for annealed pipe only, by outside diameter.
| Condition and Outside Diameter | Tensile Strength, min, psi (MPa) | Yield Strength (0.2% offset), min, psi (MPa) | Elongation in 2 in. or 50 mm (or 4D), min (%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Annealed, 5 in. (127 mm) OD and under | 55 000 (380) | 15 000 (105) | 35 |
| Annealed, over 5 in. (127 mm) OD | 55 000 (380) | 12 000 (80) | 40 |
| Stress-relieved, all sizes | 65 000 (450) | 40 000 (275) | 15 |

Above the 5 in. (127 mm) break the annealed yield minimum falls while the elongation minimum rises, and tensile strength stays the same. The inch-pound values are the requirement; the MPa figures are conversions given for information. On every ASME SB-161 UNS N02200 seamless pipe order, the lot tension result is reported against the row that matches the ordered condition and outside diameter, which is why seamless nickel alloy 200 pipe is always quoted with its condition stated.
ASTM B161 asks the order to name both the condition and the finish. Its annex describes what each condition normally delivers, adding that the manufacturer should be consulted for the latest information:
Annealed: soft, with a dull, matte finish.
Stress-relieved: given a thermal treatment short of a full anneal that relieves the major portion of the internal stresses, leaving a thin, light to medium-dark surface.
Because the condition is written separately on each line, one order of Alloy 200 seamless pipe can combine annealed and stress-relieved runs, each reported against its own row of Table 1.
Nickel 200 appears under different designations on American, European, Japanese and British drawings. ASTM B161 identifies the material by its UNS number; the other entries are cross-references for reading a foreign callout.
A requisition quoting W.Nr. 2.4066 or Ni 99.2 is entered as UNS N02200, the designation our certificate reports.
Seamless WNR 2.4066 pipe is produced from 6 mm to 457 mm OD with walls from 1 mm to 65 mm, in lengths up to 18 m, cut to length or random. Each line is ordered as standard pipe size (NPS) plus schedule, the dimensional basis ASTM B161 sets for pipe.
From 1 1/2 in. (38 mm) up, the ASTM B161 cold-worked tolerances widen with diameter. From over 1 1/2 in. (38 mm) to 3 in. (76 mm) OD, outside diameter is held to ±0.25 mm and nominal wall to ±10.0%, or +22% / 0 on minimum wall. From over 4 1/2 in. (114 mm) to 6 in. (152 mm), the limits are ±0.51 mm and ±12.5% (+28% / 0). From over 8.625 in. (219 mm) to 14 in. (356 mm), OD may vary +1.57 mm / -0.79 mm and nominal wall +15.0% / -12.5% (+30.0% / 0 on minimum wall). Cut lengths up to 7.3 m carry plus-only limits of 3.2 mm under 50.8 mm OD and 4.8 mm at 50.8 mm OD and over; longer cut lengths add 3.2 mm for each 3 m or part of it, up to 12.7 mm extra, and random lengths are agreed with the order.
Nickel 201 seamless pipes are made to the same ASTM B161 / ASME SB-161 framework, with identical limits for nickel, copper, iron, manganese, silicon and sulfur. Only carbon differs, 0.02% maximum against 0.15% for seamless 2.4066 nickel pipe. The two grades share the test regime, the elongation minimums and the certification rule, but Table 1 sets lower tensile and yield minimums for the low-carbon grade in every row. Where a line is specified in austenitic stainless steel rather than nickel, Stainless Steel 316L seamless pipes come from the same Ban Bueng plant under their own ASTM pipe standard.
Seamless nickel alloy 200 pipe is chosen for caustic alkalis such as sodium hydroxide, for neutral and reducing media, neutral salt solutions and de-aerated acids, and for dry chlorine and hydrogen chloride.

Chlor-alkali plants use this pipe for caustic soda and chlorine production, running the sodium hydroxide piping around their evaporators, with each line ordered by NPS, schedule and condition.

Plants that chlorinate aliphatic hydrocarbons carry their corrosive process fluids through commercially pure nickel piping, a service in which the pipe is exposed to dry chlorine and hydrogen chloride.

Desalination plants transport seawater through lines in this grade, specifying cold-worked lengths in the schedule each run requires, with every piece pressure tested or electrically examined before dispatch.

Shipbuilders install the pipe in shipboard piping systems that carry seawater and neutral salt solutions, and the heat number marked on each piece traces every length back to its certificate.

Offshore platforms use the grade for oil and gas storage and transportation lines, and for the process piping that connects their heat exchangers and condensers, ordered by NPS and schedule.

The plating industry pipes its electroplating baths in commercially pure nickel, with the stress-relieved condition available where a line needs higher minimum strength than annealed pipe of the same size.

When the design needs the higher minimums. Stress-relieved pipe is held to 65 000 psi (450 MPa) tensile and 40 000 psi (275 MPa) yield at every size; annealed pipe up to 127 mm OD, to 55 000 psi (380 MPa) and 15 000 psi (105 MPa). Ductility is the trade-off: minimum elongation falls to 15%, from 35% or 40%.
12 000 psi (80 MPa) instead of 15 000 psi (105 MPa). The 5 in. (127 mm) break refers to outside diameter, not nominal pipe size, so check the OD of the NPS you order; the certificate then reports the lot tension result against the lower row. Stress-relieved pipe keeps one row for all sizes.
A manufacturer's certification stating that the pipe was manufactured, tested and inspected to ASTM B161 and that results on representative samples meet its requirements, plus a report of the test results. B161 makes both mandatory. We issue them as EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request), showing heat chemistry, the lot tension result and the pressure or electric test.
Arithmetically, by difference. Copper, iron, manganese, carbon, silicon and sulfur are analyzed against their maximums, and nickel is the remainder, which must reach at least 99.0%. A product (check) analysis, if you want one, is performed by the purchaser; state on the order whether samples should be furnished.
The producer, unless the purchase order names the test. Hydrostatic testing uses 1000 psi (6.9 MPa), held at least 5 seconds, unless the allowable fiber stress for the condition limits the pressure; by agreement pipe may be tested to 1 1/2 times that stress. Any length that leaks is rejected. The electric option is eddy current or ultrasonic examination.
Choose Nickel 200 where the design relies on the higher B161 strength minimums, such as 55 000 psi (380 MPa) annealed tensile against 50 000 psi (345 MPa), or 40 000 psi (275 MPa) stress-relieved yield against 30 000 psi (205 MPa). Choose the low-carbon grade where your process specification calls for its 0.02% carbon limit.
The alloy name or UNS number, ASTM B161 with its year of issue, condition and finish, standard pipe size and schedule, cut or random length, and quantity in feet or pieces. Add the required test if you need a specific one, any test pressure other than standard, and the tests or inspections you intend to witness.
