Chlor-Alkali and Caustic Soda Lines
Diaphragm cell plants carry caustic soda and chlorine through lines and cell components in this alloy, and the same grade handles chlorinated solvents and caustic solutions in the chemical units downstream.
ASTM B167 / ASME SB-167 / UNS N06600 / W.Nr. 2.4816
Manufactured to ASTM B167 / ASME SB-167 by Thaida Stainless Steel Manufacturing (Thailand) Co., Ltd., Inconel 600 seamless pipes leave our Ban Bueng, Chonburi plant in the nickel-chromium-iron alloy UNS N06600, which European drawings call W.Nr. 2.4816. The grade runs caustic, chemical process and furnace lines and sits in our Inconel seamless pipes range beside 601, 625 and 718. Our Bang Phli, Samut Prakan office prices each inquiry and prepares its documents.

For this alloy the delivery condition belongs next to the size on every line: ASTM B167 sets different strength minimums for hot-worked and for cold-worked annealed pipe. The size range we quote and the tests attached to each lot follow.
ASTM B167 is the product standard behind every length in that range, and ASME SB-167 is its counterpart for Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code work. Its title, Standard Specification for Nickel-Chromium-Aluminum Alloys, Nickel-Chromium-Iron Alloys, Nickel-Chromium-Cobalt-Molybdenum Alloy, Nickel-Iron-Chromium-Tungsten Alloy, and Nickel-Chromium-Molybdenum-Copper Alloy Seamless Pipe and Tube, shows how many alloys it spans. It lists each one by UNS number only, so N06600 is what an ASME SB-167 600 seamless pipe is ordered and reported against, and Inconel 600 stays the commercial name on a requisition. Pipe is specified by standard pipe size and schedule. For condenser and heat-exchanger bundles, Inconel 600 seamless tubes are ordered on outside diameter and wall under a separate tube specification.
Chemical analysis is made once per heat, and one tension test covers each lot of pipe that shares a heat, a nominal size and a condition. Every length then passes an internal hydrostatic test or a nondestructive electric examination. ASTM B167 makes a manufacturer's certification and a report of the test results a standing requirement of the specification rather than an extra to be requested, and we furnish both as an EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) material test certificate. An independent third-party inspector can witness the tests on request.
Nickel is fixed as a minimum of 72.0% rather than left as the remainder, and chromium at 14.0 to 17.0% with iron at 6.0 to 10.0% makes up most of what is left. ASTM B167 puts no limit on molybdenum, cobalt, aluminum, titanium, niobium or phosphorus for this alloy, so the heat analysis on a UNS N06600 seamless pipe certificate is read against eight rows.
UNS N06600600
| Element | Limit per ASTM B167 / ASME SB-167 (%) |
|---|---|
| Ni (Nickel) | 72.0 min |
| Cr (Chromium) | 14.0 to 17.0 |
| Fe (Iron) | 6.0 to 10.0 |
| Mn (Manganese) | 1.0 max |
| C (Carbon) | 0.15 max |
| Cu (Copper) | 0.5 max |
| Si (Silicon) | 0.5 max |
| S (Sulfur) | 0.015 max |
ASTM B167 gives this alloy four rows of tensile minimums instead of one, divided by delivery condition and by a break at 5 in. (127 mm) outside diameter. A strength figure for the grade means little until both are known.
| Condition and Outside Diameter | Tensile Strength, min, psi (MPa) | Yield Strength (0.2% offset), min, psi (MPa) | Elongation in 2 in. or 50 mm or 4D, min (%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hot-worked or hot-worked annealed, 5 in. (127 mm) and under | 80 000 (550) | 30 000 (205) | 35 |
| Hot-worked or hot-worked annealed, over 5 in. (127 mm) | 75 000 (515) | 25 000 (170) | 35 |
| Cold-worked annealed, 5 in. (127 mm) and under | 80 000 (550) | 35 000 (240) | 30 |
| Cold-worked annealed, over 5 in. (127 mm) | 80 000 (550) | 30 000 (205) | 35 |

Two rows shape most designs. Hot-worked pipe above 5 in. holds the lowest tensile and yield minimums in the table, so a wall chosen on the figures for smaller or cold-worked sizes cannot simply be carried up to it. Cold-worked annealed pipe of 5 in. and under has the highest yield of the four and pays for it with the lowest elongation. Tensile stays the same in every row but the large hot-worked one, and the lot tension result on the certificate is read against whichever row the order falls into.
Drawings from different regions name Inconel 600 in different ways. ASTM B167 assigns the UNS number; the W.Nr., JIS and GB entries are cross-references for reading a foreign callout, and they make no statement that the material conforms to those national standards.
Whichever of 2.4816, NCF600 or NS3102 a requisition quotes, our order entry converts it to N06600, and the certificate reports the heat against that UNS number.
Diameters quoted in seamless WNR 2.4816 pipe start at 6 mm OD and stop at 457 mm; wall lies between 1 mm and 65 mm, and a length may be as long as 18 m. Which tolerance set applies inside that envelope depends on whether a length was last worked hot or cold. Pipe finished cold answers to the cold-worked bands of ASTM B167, and pipe finished hot answers to its hot-worked pipe tolerances, which open with these two bands for small-bore sizes:
| Nominal OD, in. (mm) | OD Tolerance, in. (mm) | Wall Tolerance, Nominal Wall | Wall Tolerance, Minimum Wall |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (25) to 1.900 (48), incl | +0.015 (0.40) / -0.031 (0.79) | +16.0% / -12.5% | +28.5% / 0 |
| Over 1.900 (48) to 4 1/2 (114), incl | ±0.031 (0.79) | +16.0% / -12.5% | +28.5% / 0 |
Swipe sideways to see the full table.
In the first band the diameter limit is lopsided, 0.40 mm above nominal against 0.79 mm below, and over 1.900 in. up to 4 1/2 in. it evens out at 0.79 mm in both directions. Wall limits do not change between the two bands. On a nominal-wall order a length may measure 16.0% heavy or 12.5% light; on a minimum-wall order nothing under the stated figure is accepted, and up to 28.5% over is. Hot-worked sizes beyond 4 1/2 in. continue on further bands of the same table, and the quotation confirms each size on your list together with the figures that govern it.
ASTM B167 recognizes three conditions for this alloy, hot-worked, hot-worked annealed and cold-worked annealed, and prints no annealing temperature for N06600. Its informative appendix on conditions and finishes describes what each route normally delivers:
Cold-worked and annealed with a ground outside diameter, available from 1/2 to 4 in. (12.7 to 102 mm) in normal and heavy-wall sizes.
Cold-worked, annealed and pickled without grinding, from 1/2 to 6 5/8 in. (12.7 to 168 mm).
Hot-worked or hot-worked annealed: the appendix describes these finishes for tube (unpickled, pickled, or machined on both diameters), so the surface of hot-worked pipe is agreed with us when the order is placed.
Because the condition also selects the row of the strength table that applies, it belongs on each line item of an Alloy 600 seamless pipe order, next to the NPS and schedule.
Inconel 601 seamless pipes are made to the same ASTM B167 but to a different composition: 21.0 to 25.0% chromium against 14.0 to 17.0%, aluminum at 1.0 to 1.7% where 600 has no aluminum requirement, and nickel at 58.0 to 63.0% instead of a 72.0% minimum. The 601 strength minimums are also a single row for every size and both annealed conditions, so they do not shift with diameter as the 600 rows do.
Inconel 625 seamless pipes come under their own product standard and add 8.0 to 10.0% molybdenum and 3.15 to 4.15% niobium plus tantalum, neither of which ASTM B167 requires in 600. The 625 Grade 1 tensile minimum is 120 ksi (827 MPa), against a highest 600 figure of 80 000 psi (550 MPa). Our 625 range stops at 35 mm wall, while seamless Inconel 600 pipe runs to 65 mm.
Seamless nickel alloy 600 pipe goes into caustic and chlorine circuits, chemical transfer lines and furnace hardware, and into the exchanger and hydrocarbon lines that serve them.

Diaphragm cell plants carry caustic soda and chlorine through lines and cell components in this alloy, and the same grade handles chlorinated solvents and caustic solutions in the chemical units downstream.

Transfer runs for fatty acids and other corrosive chemicals, along with the evaporator, heater and condenser connections on those units, are built from Alloy 600 lengths ordered by size and schedule.

Heat treatment furnaces rely on retorts, muffles and radiant tubes made from this alloy, and the same grade supplies thermocouple protection sheaths and combustion liner tubing.

In power generation the alloy serves heat exchanger and boiler tube connections, where the pipe condition is chosen to match the row of tensile minimums that the design calculation assumed.

Oil and gas operators run the alloy in sour gas pipelines, downhole equipment and pressurized hydrocarbon lines, with the wall fixed by schedule and the condition confirmed before the pressure design closes.

Seamless alloy 2.4816 pipe is indicatively priced at USD 22 to 50 per kg. Where an order lands inside that band follows the nickel market first, because ASTM B167 sets a high nickel minimum for this alloy. Small-bore and thin-wall sizes sit higher, since they take more drawing and annealing passes per kilogram, and short lots, cut lengths or added inspection push a quote further up. Send the size list with quantities for a firm quotation.

75 000 psi (515 MPa) tensile, 25 000 psi (170 MPa) yield and 35% elongation, the lowest row ASTM B167 sets for this alloy. Where a large line needs more, cold-worked annealed pipe over 5 in. is held to 80 000 psi (550 MPa) and 30 000 psi (205 MPa); name that condition and we confirm it for the size.
Cold-worked annealed, where the design relies on yield in sizes up to 5 in.: that row has the highest yield minimum, 35 000 psi (240 MPa), and the condition comes ground or pickled. Pipe finished hot takes wider diameter tolerances, and hot-worked pipe above 5 in. carries lower minimums.
The heat analysis against the eight ASTM B167 chemistry limits, the lot tension result read against the row for your condition and size, and confirmation of the hydrostatic or electric test on each length. It is issued as EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request), with the heat number and condition matching the marking.
The mill does, unless the purchase order names one. The hydrostatic test applies 1000 psi (6.9 MPa) internal pressure, provided the standard's allowable fiber stress for that size and wall is not exceeded, and any length that leaks is rejected. If your inspection plan calls for one method, write it on the order.
601 keeps one set of minimums for every size and both annealed conditions: 80 000 psi (550 MPa), 30 000 psi (205 MPa) and 30%. 600 falls below it only in hot-worked pipe over 5 in., matches it with more elongation in smaller hot-worked sizes, and beats its yield when cold-worked annealed at 5 in. and under.
Outside diameters run 6 to 457 mm and walls 1 to 65 mm, with lengths up to 18 m, and pipe lines are normally written as NPS plus schedule. The ASTM B167 schedule appendix lists Schedules 5, 10, 40 and 80 from NPS 1/4 to NPS 6, not every schedule at every size; others can be furnished on consultation.
The purchaser. ASTM B167 makes product (check) analysis wholly the purchaser's responsibility, while we report the heat analysis on the certificate. If your inspector will sample lengths for a check, say so on the order and the lengths can be traced to their heat through the marking.
