Alkylation Unit Acid Lines
Sulfuric and hydrofluoric acid alkylation plants use the alloy for transfer piping between their processing vessels, including the lines that handle concentrated hydrofluoric acid in gasoline production.
ASTM B165 / ASME SB-165 / UNS N04400 / W.Nr. 2.4360
To ASTM B165 / ASME SB-165, Thaida Stainless Steel Manufacturing (Thailand) Co., Ltd. manufactures Monel 400 seamless pipes in the nickel-copper alloy UNS N04400 (W.Nr. 2.4360) at its Ban Bueng, Chonburi plant. Of the two grades in our Monel seamless pipes range, this is the one with its own ASTM pipe specification, supplied cold-worked and then annealed or stress-relieved. Quotations, order entry and certificates are handled by our office in Bang Phli, Samut Prakan.

Two entries on each line item fix most of what the pipe has to meet: the delivery condition, which selects the strength row, and the NPS with its schedule, which sets the wall. The table gives both alongside the size range we quote.
ASTM B165, titled Standard Specification for Nickel-Copper Alloy Seamless Pipe and Tube, covers UNS N04400 as cold-worked seamless pipe and tube and identifies the alloy by that UNS number alone. ASME SB-165 is the related specification for Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code work, so an ASME SB-165 400 seamless pipe is ordered and reported against N04400, with Monel 400 kept as the commercial name. UNS N04400 is therefore the designation that appears in the marking and on the certificate. The standard notes that hot-worked material is available, with its properties and tolerances agreed between manufacturer and purchaser rather than printed in its tables. Pipe is ordered by standard pipe size and schedule, while Monel 400 seamless tubes come under the same specification but are ordered by outside diameter and nominal or minimum wall.
Chemical analysis is made once per heat, and one tension test, taken from material in its final condition, covers each lot of the same heat, nominal size and condition. Each piece is then hydrostatically tested or examined by a nondestructive electric test, eddy current or ultrasonic. ASTM B165 makes a manufacturer's certification and a report of the test results mandatory for every order, and we issue both as an EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) material test certificate. Inspection terms are agreed in the purchase contract, and an independent third-party inspector can witness the tests on request.
ASTM B165 sets nickel as a minimum only, 63.0%, determined arithmetically by difference and with no upper limit, and holds copper between 28.0 and 34.0%. Chromium, molybdenum, aluminum, titanium, cobalt and phosphorus carry no requirement, so the heat analysis of a UNS N04400 seamless pipe is read against seven rows. The right-hand column gives the variation the standard permits when a product (check) analysis is made.

| Element | Limit per ASTM B165 / ASME SB-165 (%) | Check Analysis Variation, Under Min or Over Max (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Ni (Nickel) | 63.0 min | 0.45 |
| Cu (Copper) | 28.0 to 34.0 | 0.15 under min, 0.20 over max |
| Fe (Iron) | 2.5 max | 0.05 |
| Mn (Manganese) | 2.0 max | 0.04 |
| C (Carbon) | 0.3 max | 0.02 |
| Si (Silicon) | 0.5 max | 0.03 |
| S (Sulfur) | 0.024 max | 0.005 |
Table 1 of ASTM B165 gives this alloy three rows of minimums, chosen first by condition and then, for annealed pipe only, by outside diameter.
| Condition and Outside Diameter | Tensile Strength, min, psi (MPa) | Yield Strength (0.2% offset), min, psi (MPa) | Elongation in 2 in. or 50 mm (or 4D), min (%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Annealed, 5 in. (127 mm) OD and under | 70 000 (480) | 28 000 (195) | 35 |
| Annealed, over 5 in. (127 mm) OD | 70 000 (480) | 25 000 (170) | 35 |
| Stress-relieved, all sizes | 85 000 (585) | 55 000 (380) | 15 |

Tensile strength and elongation stay the same on both sides of the 5 in. (127 mm) break; only the annealed yield minimum steps down for the larger diameters, and the stress-relieved row applies to every size. The inch-pound figures are the requirement and the MPa values are conversions given for information. The lot tension result on the certificate is read against the row that matches the condition and size on the order.
B165 asks the order to name both the condition and the finish. Its informative appendix on conditions and finishes describes what each normally delivers, adding that the manufacturer should be consulted:
Annealed: soft, with a dull matte finish.
Stress-relieved: given a thermal treatment short of a full anneal that relieves the major portion of the internal stresses, leaving a thin, light- to medium-dark surface.
Alloy 400 seamless pipe is hardened only by cold work, not by age hardening, which this alloy cannot undergo. The condition written on each line, annealed or stress-relieved, therefore sets the strength level, and for annealed pipe the outside diameter then decides which of the two yield rows of Table 1 applies.
Drawings from different regions call Monel 400 by different designations. ASTM B165 lists the alloy by UNS number; the W.Nr. and Chinese ISC entries are cross-references for reading a foreign callout, and they make no statement of conformance to another national standard.
A requisition that quotes 2.4360 or H04400 is entered as UNS N04400, the designation our certificate reports.
Seamless WNR 2.4360 pipe is quoted from 6 mm to 457 mm OD with walls from 1 mm to 65 mm, in lengths up to 18 m, cut to length or random. Each line is written as NPS plus schedule. The pipe-schedule appendix of ASTM B165, given for information only, lists Schedules 10, 40 and 80 from NPS 1/8 to NPS 6, Schedule 5 from NPS 1/2 to NPS 6, and Schedules 40 and 80 alone at NPS 8. At NPS 2 (60.3 mm OD), for example, the listed walls are 1.6 mm in Schedule 5, 2.8 mm in Schedule 10, 3.9 mm in Schedule 40 and 5.5 mm in Schedule 80.
Diameter and wall tolerances for cold-worked pipe come from Table 3 of B165, which runs from over 10 mm to 219 mm OD. The OD limit widens from ±0.13 mm in the smallest band to ±0.79 mm in the largest, and nominal wall may vary ±15.0% below 16 mm OD, ±10.0% from 16 mm up to and including 114 mm, and ±12.5% above 114 mm. The table has no band outside that span, so for any size beyond it the tolerance is stated in our quotation. Cut lengths up to 7.3 m carry plus-only length limits of 3.2 mm under 50.8 mm OD and 4.8 mm at 50.8 mm OD and over.
Monel K500 seamless pipes share the nickel-copper base but add aluminum and titanium, which make that alloy age-hardenable. ASTM B165 covers UNS N04400 only, so K500 is supplied to the chemistry, condition and tests written on the purchase order. Seamless Monel 400 pipe keeps the whole B165 framework: fixed composition limits, Table 1 minimums, a pressure or electric test on every piece and mandatory certification. B165 also sets no chromium requirement for N04400; where a line is specified in a nickel-chromium-iron alloy instead, Inconel 600 seamless pipes are made under their own product standard.
Seamless nickel alloy 400 pipe carries acid, brine and process streams in refineries, chemical plants, desalination units and power stations, chosen for its resistance to hydrofluoric acid, alkalis and rapidly flowing seawater.

Sulfuric and hydrofluoric acid alkylation plants use the alloy for transfer piping between their processing vessels, including the lines that handle concentrated hydrofluoric acid in gasoline production.

Refinery crude distillation columns send their fractions through transfer lines in this alloy, and the same grade is used for the overhead condenser lines on those columns, with a schedule chosen for each run.

Desalination and seawater plants pipe their brine heaters and seawater scrubbers in this alloy, and naval vessels and offshore platforms use it for seawater intake piping where the flow is fast.

Steel descaling lines heat their sulfuric or hydrochloric acid pickling baths with coils made from this pipe, which stay submerged in the solution for as long as the bath is in service.

Carbon dioxide absorption units that circulate monoethanolamine run their MEA reboiling circuits in the alloy, with each line ordered by NPS and schedule to suit the reboiler connections.

Power stations use the alloy in feed-water and steam-generator service, where the annealed or stress-relieved condition of each length is fixed on the order before the line is fabricated.

Perchloroethylene and chlorinated plastics production relies on the alloy for the reactor connections and piping that carry chlorine and chlorinated compounds through the plant.

Seamless alloy 2.4360 pipe is indicatively priced at USD 22 to 50 per kg. Where an order sits inside that range depends on the nickel market first and the copper market second, because the alloy is built on those two metals. Small NPS and thin schedules take more drawing and annealing passes per kilogram than heavier sections, and cut lengths, small lots or added inspection move a quote toward the top. A size list with quantities gets a firm price.
Indicative only. Send your sizes and specification to Thaida for a firm quotation.
Monel 400 seamless pipes are produced at 154 Moo.1 Map Phai, Ban Bueng, Chonburi 20170, Thailand. We supply projects across Thailand and export to Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines and India.
When the design needs the higher minimums: stress-relieved pipe is held to 85 000 psi (585 MPa) tensile and 55 000 psi (380 MPa) yield at every size, against 70 000 psi (480 MPa) tensile when annealed. The trade-off is ductility, as minimum elongation falls from 35% to 15%. Name the condition on each line.
Annealed pipe over 5 in. (127 mm) OD: in the B165 schedule appendix, NPS 5, 6 and 8 (141.3, 168.3 and 219.1 mm OD), plus every larger size in our range. Their yield minimum is 25 000 psi (170 MPa) instead of 28 000 psi (195 MPa); NPS 4 (114.3 mm) and smaller keep the higher figure.
Yes, by agreement. The B165 appendix lists Schedules 5, 10, 40 and 80 only, for information, and states that other schedules may be furnished after consulting the manufacturer. Send the NPS and the wall you need; walls from 1 mm to 65 mm fall within the range we quote.
The manufacturer, unless the purchase order names the test. The hydrostatic test applies 1000 psi (6.9 MPa) internal pressure, provided the fiber stress it produces stays within the allowable value for the condition and size, or 1 1/2 times that value by agreement, and a length that leaks is rejected. The electric alternative is eddy current or ultrasonic examination.
A statement that the pipe was manufactured, tested and inspected to ASTM B165 and met its requirements, with the results: heat analysis against the seven chemistry limits, the lot tension result, and confirmation of the hydrostatic or electric test on each piece. We issue it as EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request), matching the heat number in the marking.
Monel 400, where the line must be bought and documented to an ASTM or ASME pipe specification, since B165 fixes its composition, strength rows and tests. K500 fits a design that needs the extra strength of age hardening, with its condition and tests set on the order. Their corrosion resistance is similar, so strength and documentation decide.
The purchaser, if one is wanted. B165 makes product (check) analysis wholly the purchaser's responsibility and allows set variations from the heat limits, such as 0.45% below the nickel minimum or 0.20% above the copper maximum. State on the order whether samples are to be furnished; the marking traces the pipe to its heat.
