Heat-Treating Furnaces
Industrial heat-treating furnaces use the alloy for radiant tubes and burner nozzles, and for the thermocouple protection sleeves that carry temperature sensors through the furnace wall into the working zone.
ASTM B167 / ASME SB-167 / UNS N06601 / W.Nr. 2.4851
At its Ban Bueng, Chonburi plant, Thaida Stainless Steel Manufacturing (Thailand) Co., Ltd. produces Inconel 601 seamless pipes to ASTM B167 / ASME SB-167 for radiant tube runs, fired-heater sections and hot process lines. The grade is identified as UNS N06601, with W.Nr. 2.4851 as its European number, and it sits beside 600, 625 and 718 in the Inconel seamless pipes range we manufacture. Quotations, order documents and export papers are handled by the Bang Phli, Samut Prakan sales office.

EN 10204 3.1 certificate / 3.2 on request
Every line of a 601 inquiry can be checked against the envelope and conditions below before a drawing is revised, and the quotation confirms the size, wall and condition of each item.
ASTM B167 is mirrored for boiler and pressure vessel code work as ASME SB-167, and it fixes the composition limits, the tensile minimums, the delivery conditions and the pressure or electric test for the seamless pipe and tube it covers, N06601 among them. The standard knows this alloy only by its UNS number, N06601; Inconel 601 and Alloy 601 are commercial names, so the UNS number is what a purchase order line should carry. Diameter, wall and cut-length tolerances for an ASTM B167 Inconel 601 seamless pipe are confirmed on the quotation for each size, and the cold-worked bands for mid-size pipe are tabulated under the sizes section. A diameter-and-wall order in the same alloy is handled as tube, which we supply as Inconel 601 seamless tubes.
Testing under ASTM B167 is organized by lot. A chemical lot is simply one heat. For tension testing, a lot covers all material of one heat, one nominal size (length excepted) and one condition, and pipe that cannot be identified by heat is grouped in lots of no more than 500 lb (227 kg). Each lot receives one chemical analysis and one tension test. Every ASME SB-167 601 seamless pipe length is then proved on its own, either hydrostatically at 1000 psi (6.9 MPa), provided the resulting fiber stress stays within the standard's allowable value, or by a non-destructive electric test, and a length that leaks is rejected. Those results are entered on an EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) certificate, and an outside inspection agency can attend when the contract calls for one.
Chromium at 21.0 to 25.0% and aluminum at 1.0 to 1.7% are the figures that set this alloy apart, with nickel held between 58.0 and 63.0% and iron making up the remainder. Our Inconel 600 seamless pipes share ASTM B167 but carry a 72.0% nickel minimum and no aluminum requirement, so 601 is the lower-nickel composition of the two, with aluminum added. Manganese is capped at 1.5% and copper at 1.0%. Each heat is analyzed against the limits below.
UNS N06601601
| Element | Limit, % (ASTM B167, UNS N06601) |
|---|---|
| Ni (Nickel) | 58.0 to 63.0 |
| Cr (Chromium) | 21.0 to 25.0 |
| Fe (Iron) | Remainder |
| Al (Aluminum) | 1.0 to 1.7 |
| Mn (Manganese) | 1.5 max |
| Cu (Copper) | 1.0 max |
| C (Carbon) | 0.10 max |
| Si (Silicon) | 0.5 max |
| S (Sulfur) | 0.015 max |
ASTM B167 gives UNS N06601 a single row of room-temperature minimums, whatever the diameter and whichever annealed condition is supplied.
| Condition and Size | Tensile Strength, min | Yield Strength (0.2% offset), min | Elongation in 2 in. or 50 mm or 4D, min |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cold-worked annealed or hot-worked annealed, all sizes | 80 000 psi (550 MPa) | 30 000 psi (205 MPa) | 30% |

That one row is the practical contrast with UNS N06600, whose B167 minimums change with condition and again once the outside diameter passes 5 in. (127 mm). A line laid out in seamless nickel alloy 601 pipe therefore takes the same specified minimums from small bore to the top of the size range, and each lot's tension figures, printed on the certificate, show how far the delivered pipe clears them.
Inconel 601 turns up under several numbering systems on drawings and data sheets. ASTM B167 itself uses only the UNS number; the European and Japanese entries are cross-references and imply no conformity to those national standards.
A drawing that calls for W.Nr. 2.4851 or NCF601 is quoted and supplied as UNS N06601 seamless pipe.
For this grade we produce outside diameters from 6 mm through 457 mm, wall thicknesses between 1 and 65 mm, and individual pieces as long as 18 m. Each pipe item under ASTM B167 is written as a standard pipe size plus a schedule. The standard's appendix, which is informational only, shows walls for Schedules 5, 10, 40 and 80 between nominal sizes 1/4 and 6, with gaps where a schedule is not tabulated, and leaves other schedules to agreement with the manufacturer. A heavier or intermediate wall is therefore written on the inquiry and confirmed in the quotation. Every seamless 2.4851 pipe leaves the mill with plain ends, cut and deburred, ready for end preparation in the fabrication shop.
Cold-worked pipe from over 3 in. (76 mm) to 8 5/8 in. (219 mm) outside diameter is held to these ASTM B167 permitted variations:
| Nominal OD, in. (mm) | OD Plus, in. (mm) | OD Minus, in. (mm) | Nominal Wall Plus, % | Nominal Wall Minus, % | Minimum Wall Plus, % | Minimum Wall Minus, % |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Over 3 (76) to 4 1/2 (114), incl | 0.015 (0.38) | 0.015 (0.38) | 10.0 | 10.0 | 22 | 0 |
| Over 4 1/2 (114) to 6 (152), incl | 0.020 (0.51) | 0.020 (0.51) | 12.5 | 12.5 | 28 | 0 |

The wall columns follow the wall as ordered: a nominal wall carries the plus-and-minus band, while a seamless WNR 2.4851 pipe ordered to minimum wall may run over but never under it. The tabulated values include eccentricity. Pipe finished hot has its own, wider tolerance table, and the quotation names the regime that applies to each size.
The duties below are where this grade shows up on piping specifications. When a project specification calls for a lower-alloy stainless grade instead, that order is quoted in our stainless steel 310S seamless pipes.

Industrial heat-treating furnaces use the alloy for radiant tubes and burner nozzles, and for the thermocouple protection sleeves that carry temperature sensors through the furnace wall into the working zone.

Heater tubes in the radiation section of direct-fired heaters run in seamless Inconel 601 pipe, where the coil faces the burners across the firebox of petrochemical process units.

Chemical plants route hot process gas through this alloy in thermal reactors and ammonia reforming units, joining reactor nozzles to transfer headers with welded spools cut from standard pipe sizes.

Steam and power systems take the grade into superheater and reheater components, high-temperature heat exchangers and boiler feedwater heaters, where the pipe forms headers and the connecting runs between tube banks.

Vessels and offshore platforms run gas turbine exhaust lines and high-temperature heat exchanger circuits in this alloy, together with process lines that carry corrosive fluids on deck.

Seamless Inconel 601 pipe is indicated at USD 22 to 50 per kg. Because nickel forms the bulk of the alloy, the band tracks the nickel market, while the place of an item inside it depends on nominal size, wall and cut length, since small bores and heavy or unusual walls take more work per kilogram than standard sizes. Fewer stockists carry 601 than the most common nickel alloys, so order quantity and lead time also shape the figure. A line list with sizes and quantities turns the indication into a dated quotation.

Between 1.0 and 1.7%, the range ASTM B167 sets for UNS N06601, and the heat analysis on the certificate records the measured value for your lot. To confirm 601 rather than 600 material on arrival, chromium is the decisive reading: the standard's ranges, 21.0 to 25.0% here against 14.0 to 17.0% for UNS N06600, do not overlap.
Not in their specified minimums, because both conditions share one tensile row for every size. What differs is dimensional control: B167 gives cold-worked pipe and pipe finished hot separate tolerance tables, the hot one wider on diameter, and the quotation names the table that applies to each size. Name the condition on the order if your piping class requires one.
Yes, one per lot. Each combination of heat, nominal size and condition forms its own lot, so three sizes from one heat, all cold-worked annealed, carry three tension tests and three results on the certificate. Chemical analysis stays at one per heat, because the chemical lot is the heat itself.
Both grades appear in furnace work, so the grade named in the furnace designer's material specification decides. Where the choice is open, compare the B167 figures: 601 adds aluminum and more chromium and keeps one strength row for all sizes, while the hot-worked minimums of 600 drop above 5 in. (127 mm) OD.
For walls over 3% of OD, each reading up to 4 1/2 in. (114 mm) OD, ovality included, must sit inside the band; above 114 mm only the mean must, and single readings may reach twice it. Thinner walls, 3% of OD or less, are judged on the mean, with readings allowed the band plus 0.5% of nominal OD.
A manufacturer's certification and test report, required by ASTM B167 on every order, issued as an EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) certificate covering the heat analysis, the tension result for each lot and the hydrostatic or electric test passed by every length. A packing list ties heat numbers to cases; agency reports join when one is named.
