Superheater and Reheater Lines
Steam generation plants use this piping for superheater and reheater tubing, ordered by NPS and schedule in the cold-worked annealed condition that carries the higher B407 minimums.
ASTM B407 / ASME SB-407 / UNS N08800 / W.Nr. 1.4876
To ASTM B407 / ASME SB-407, Thaida Stainless Steel Manufacturing (Thailand) Co., Ltd. produces Incoloy 800 seamless pipes at its Ban Bueng, Chonburi plant in the nickel-iron-chromium alloy UNS N08800, which European drawings list as W.Nr. 1.4876. A heated billet is forced over a mandrel into a hollow shell, then cold drawn or cold rolled to size and annealed. The grade covers general-service lines in our Incoloy seamless pipes range, and our Bang Phli, Samut Prakan office handles quotations and certificates.

Two entries decide how a line of this grade is checked: the condition, because ASTM B407 gives Alloy 800 two strength rows, and the NPS with its schedule. The table sets out our range, the condition we deliver and the tests attached to every length.
ASTM B407 carries the title Standard Specification for Nickel-Iron-Chromium Alloy Seamless Pipe and Tube, and ASME SB-407 is its counterpart for Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code work. The standard lists its alloys by UNS number only, so N08800 is the designation an ASTM B407 Incoloy 800 seamless pipe is ordered, marked and certified against, and Incoloy 800 stays the commercial name on a requisition. B407 places UNS N08800 in general service and UNS N08810 and N08811 in service where creep and rupture resistance is required. Exchanger bundles in the same alloy are ordered as Incoloy 800 seamless tubes, on outside diameter and wall under the same standard.
Every length passes either a hydrostatic test or a nondestructive electric test, and the choice rests with the mill unless the purchase order names one. Chemical analysis and a tension test are each made once per lot. For N08800, ASTM B407 sets neither a grain-size requirement nor a minimum heat-treatment temperature; the condition named on the order is what the certificate confirms. Results are issued on an EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) material test certificate, and third-party inspection is available on request.
ASTM B407 gives N08800 a column of its own. Nickel is held at 30.0 to 35.0% and chromium at 19.0 to 23.0%, while iron, determined by difference, must reach 39.5% at least. Aluminum and titanium each fall between 0.15 and 0.60%, and carbon has a 0.10% ceiling with no floor. The heat analysis on every UNS N08800 seamless pipe certificate is read against these rows.
UNS N08800800
| Element | Limit per ASTM B407 / ASME SB-407 (%) |
|---|---|
| Ni (Nickel) | 30.0 to 35.0 |
| Cr (Chromium) | 19.0 to 23.0 |
| Fe (Iron) | 39.5 min |
| Mn (Manganese) | 1.5 max |
| C (Carbon) | 0.10 max |
| Cu (Copper) | 0.75 max |
| Si (Silicon) | 1.0 max |
| S (Sulfur) | 0.015 max |
| Al (Aluminum) | 0.15 to 0.60 |
| Ti (Titanium) | 0.15 to 0.60 |
| P (Phosphorus) | 0.045 max |
Of the three 800-family grades in ASTM B407, only N08800 has minimums that change with condition. An ASME SB-407 800 seamless pipe therefore has no single strength figure until its condition is known.
| Condition | Tensile Strength, min, psi (MPa) | Yield Strength (0.2% offset), min, psi (MPa) | Elongation in 2 in. or 50 mm (or 4D), min (%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cold-worked annealed | 75 000 (520) | 30 000 (205) | 30 |
| Hot-finished annealed or hot-finished | 65 000 (450) | 25 000 (170) | 30 |

Our cold drawing or cold rolling route, followed by annealing, delivers the first row. The second row applies to pipe finished hot, with or without a final anneal, and is lower in both tensile and yield while elongation stays at 30%. The tension test made on each lot is judged against the row the order names, so the condition belongs on the line item beside the schedule.
Drawings from American, European and Japanese licensors name this alloy in different ways. ASTM B407 identifies the alloy by its UNS number; the W.Nr. and JIS entries are cross-references for reading a foreign callout and say nothing about conformance to those national standards.
When a requisition quotes 1.4876 or NCF800, our order entry records N08800, and the heat is certified against that UNS number.
Seamless WNR 1.4876 pipe is made from 6 mm to 457 mm OD with walls of 1 mm to 65 mm and lengths up to 18 m; the quotation confirms each size on your list. ASTM B407 has pipe ordered by standard pipe size and schedule, so a line reads as NPS plus schedule, followed by the condition and the cut length. Plain ends, cut and deburred, are standard, and ends beveled for welding or threaded are prepared when the order gives the details. B407 sets its cold-finished OD and wall variations from 1/2 in. (12.7 mm) to 6 5/8 in. (168.3 mm), and the offer states the variations that apply to every size quoted.
The informative appendix of ASTM B407 describes two surfaces for cold-finished pipe, both annealed, and each seamless alloy 1.4876 pipe line is ordered with one of them:
Cold-finished, annealed, with ground outside diameter: 1/2 to 4 in. (12.7 to 102 mm), in normal and heavy-wall sizes and all pipe schedules.
Cold-finished, annealed and pickled, not ground: 1/2 to 6 5/8 in. (12.7 to 168 mm).
The two spans differ, so the surface is written on each line next to the NPS, and the surface of diameters above them is agreed when the order is placed.
Incoloy 800H seamless pipes are made to the same ASTM B407 and share the nickel, chromium, iron, aluminum and titanium limits of 800. Carbon is where the chemistry parts: 800H holds it at 0.05 to 0.10%, while 800 has only the 0.10% maximum. B407 also sets a grain-size requirement and a minimum final heat-treatment temperature for 800H and places N08810 in service where creep and rupture resistance is required, leaving seamless Incoloy 800 pipe as the general-service grade.
Incoloy 825 seamless pipes come under a different product standard, one written for pipe and tube in general corrosive service. That alloy carries molybdenum at 2.5 to 3.5%, for which B407 sets no limit in 800, and copper at 1.5 to 3.0% against the 0.75% maximum of 800, with nickel starting at 38.0%. Choosing between them means choosing a standard and a chemistry, and each line names its UNS number so the certificate is read against the right table.
Alloy 800 seamless pipe serves steam, furnace, chemical, pulp and waste-treatment plants, in lines that see heat and corrosive media together.

Steam generation plants use this piping for superheater and reheater tubing, ordered by NPS and schedule in the cold-worked annealed condition that carries the higher B407 minimums.

Industrial heat-treating furnaces use the alloy for radiant tubes and muffles, where nickel and chromium give it resistance to oxidation and carburization through long periods of heating.

Chemical and petrochemical units build heat exchangers and process lines in Alloy 800, including lines handling nitric acid, with the pipe ends beveled to suit the welding procedure.

Pulp mills make digester-liquor heaters from this pipe, where the circuit meets process heat together with chemical attack from the liquor in the recovery and processing equipment.

Waste treatment plants fit the pipe to incinerator components that carry hot, corrosive gases and to pollution control scrubbers, with every length hydrostatically or electrically tested before dispatch.

Seamless nickel alloy 800 pipe is indicatively priced at USD 18 to 45 per kg. Where a quotation lands in that band follows the nickel market first, since nickel carries most of the metal value in this alloy. Size comes next: small-diameter and thin-wall sizes take more drawing and annealing passes per kilogram than heavier sections. Short lots, cut lengths and added inspection move a figure toward the top of the range, so send the size list with quantities for a firm price.
Indicative only. Send your sizes and specification to Thaida for a firm quotation.

They are higher: ASTM B407 sets 75 000 psi (520 MPa) tensile and 30 000 psi (205 MPa) yield for cold-worked annealed pipe, against 65 000 psi (450 MPa) and 25 000 psi (170 MPa) for the hot-finished row, with 30% elongation in both. The order should name the condition the design was based on.
No. ASTM B407 gives 800H one row for both its conditions, 65 000 psi (450 MPa) tensile and 25 000 psi (170 MPa) yield, the same as hot-finished 800, while cold-worked annealed 800 is held to 75 000 psi (520 MPa). 800H is specified for service needing creep and rupture resistance, not for higher listed minimums.
Yes. ASTM B407 leaves the choice between the two tests to the mill only when the purchase order is silent, so writing one method on the order fixes it for every length. A test pressure other than the standard one can be stated on the order as well, and any length that leaks under hydrostatic pressure is rejected.
Its appendix lists Schedules 5, 10, 40 and 80 between NPS 1/4 and NPS 6 as regularly available, though not every schedule at every size: Schedule 5 starts at NPS 1/2, and Schedule 80 stops at NPS 4. Other schedules can be furnished after consultation, and the quotation names the wall for each one.
The NPS and schedule, the condition, the surface finish, the cut length and quantity, and the ends: plain, cut and deburred, unless you give details for beveling or threading. Close the line with the certificate level, EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request), and name a third-party inspector there if one will witness the tests.
For chemical analysis a lot is one heat. For the tension test it is pipe of one heat, nominal size and condition, from one furnace charge or one continuous-furnace run at unchanged settings where annealed, and never over 20 000 lb (9100 kg). Each lot gets one tension test, so pipe in two conditions never shares a result.
The heat analysis against the ASTM B407 limits for UNS N08800, the lot tension result read against the row for the ordered condition, and confirmation that each length passed the hydrostatic or electric test. It is issued as EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) and carries the heat number marked on the pipe.
