Chlor-Alkali Evaporator Connections
Chlor-alkali plants run the feed, transfer and discharge lines around their caustic evaporators in this low-carbon nickel, with every run ordered by NPS and schedule and tested piece by piece.
ASTM B161 / ASME SB-161 / UNS N02201 / W.Nr. 2.4068
Nickel 201 seamless pipes leave the Ban Bueng, Chonburi plant of Thaida Stainless Steel Manufacturing (Thailand) Co., Ltd. cold-worked to ASTM B161 / ASME SB-161 in low-carbon nickel UNS N02201 (W.Nr. 2.4068). The grade sits beside Nickel 200 in our nickel alloy seamless pipes range as its low-carbon version, delivered annealed or stress-relieved. Quotations, order entry and the certificate for every shipment are handled by our office in Bang Phli, Samut Prakan.

The table summarizes the supply basis we quote for this grade: the size range, the ordering basis written on each line, the delivery conditions ASTM B161 allows for UNS N02201, and the tests and documents that come with every order.
ASTM B161, the Standard Specification for Nickel Seamless Pipe and Tube, covers nickel (UNS N02200) and low-carbon nickel (UNS N02201) as cold-worked seamless pipe and tube. For Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code applications the related specification is ASME SB-161, and a code line item is written as ASME SB-161 UNS N02201 seamless pipe. B161 names the grade low-carbon nickel, UNS N02201: Nickel 201 is the commercial name, while UNS N02201 is what the marking and the certificate carry. The inch-pound values of B161 are the requirement, and the SI figures in parentheses are conversions given for information. B161 also covers tube, ordered by outside diameter and wall; for heat-exchanger duty our Nickel 201 seamless tubes are made to their own tube standard, while pipe is ordered by standard pipe size and schedule.
One chemical analysis and one tension test are made for each lot. Every UNS N02201 seamless pipe is then either hydrostatically tested or examined by a nondestructive electric test, at the producer's option unless the purchase order names the test. The hydrostatic test applies 1000 psi (6.9 MPa), provided the allowable fiber stress for the condition and size is not exceeded, and holds it for at least 5 seconds; a piece that leaks is rejected. The electric alternative is eddy current or ultrasonic examination. ASTM B161 makes a manufacturer's certification and a report of the test results mandatory, and we issue both as an EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) material test certificate. Tests the purchaser wishes to witness are named on the order, and third-party inspection is available on request.
ASTM B161 Table 2 sets seven composition limits, and the heat analysis of seamless 2.4068 nickel pipe is checked against each of them. Nickel is a minimum, determined arithmetically by difference, and every other element is a maximum.
UNS N02201201
| Element | Limit per ASTM B161 / ASME SB-161 (%) |
|---|---|
| Ni (Nickel) | 99.0 min |
| Cu (Copper) | 0.25 max |
| Fe (Iron) | 0.40 max |
| Mn (Manganese) | 0.35 max |
| C (Carbon) | 0.02 max |
| Si (Silicon) | 0.35 max |
| S (Sulfur) | 0.01 max |
In the same B161 table, carbon is the only limit that differs for Nickel 200 seamless pipes; the nickel, copper, iron, manganese, silicon and sulfur limits are identical. Copper stays at 0.25% maximum, so where a line is specified in a nickel-copper alloy instead, Monel 400 seamless pipes are made under their own product standard. If the purchaser plans a product (check) analysis, the order states whether samples are to be furnished.
B161 Table 1 sets the low-carbon nickel minimums by delivery condition, and for annealed pipe it adds a split at 5 in. (127 mm) outside diameter.
| Condition and Outside Diameter | Tensile Strength, min, psi (MPa) | Yield Strength (0.2% offset), min, psi (MPa) | Elongation in 2 in. or 50 mm (or 4D), min (%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Annealed, 5 in. (127 mm) OD and under | 50 000 (345) | 12 000 (80) | 35 |
| Annealed, over 5 in. (127 mm) OD | 50 000 (345) | 10 000 (70) | 40 |
| Stress-relieved, all sizes | 60 000 (415) | 30 000 (205) | 15 |

Above 5 in. (127 mm) OD the annealed yield minimum steps down from 12 000 to 10 000 psi, while the elongation minimum rises from 35 to 40%; the tensile minimum is unchanged. Table 1 is the only strength requirement B161 sets for this pipe, so the lot tension result is the figure the certificate is checked against.
The order names the condition and the finish. The B161 annex on conditions and finishes normally supplied describes low-carbon nickel as similar to nickel UNS N02200 in both, and notes that the manufacturer should be consulted for current information:
Annealed: soft, with a dull, matte finish.
Stress-relieved: thermally treated below the annealing temperature to relieve the major portion of the internal stresses, with a thin, light to medium-dark surface.
Annealed Alloy 201 seamless pipe gives the higher elongation minimums of Table 1, and stress-relieved pipe the higher tensile and yield minimums at every size. The condition written on each line therefore decides which row of the table the test result is read against.
ASTM B161 lists the grade as low-carbon nickel, UNS N02201. The European, Japanese and British entries below are cross-references for reading a foreign drawing or requisition; they make no statement of conformance to another national standard.
A callout of 2.4068, LC-Ni 99, NW 2201 or NA 12 is entered on our order as UNS N02201, the designation reported on the certificate.
Seamless WNR 2.4068 pipe is quoted from 6 mm to 457 mm OD with walls from 1 mm to 65 mm, in lengths up to 18 m, cut to length or random. Each ASTM B161 Nickel 201 seamless pipe line is written as standard pipe size and schedule, as the standard asks. The permitted variations that apply to cold-worked seamless pipe under ASTM B161 run in bands up to 24 in. (610 mm) OD, so every size in our range falls inside the table below.
| Nominal OD, in. (mm) | OD Variation, in. (mm) | Nominal Wall Variation (%) | Minimum Wall Variation (%) |

Cut lengths carry plus-only limits: 1/8 in. (3.2 mm) under 2 in. (50.8 mm) OD and 3/16 in. (4.8 mm) at 2 in. (50.8 mm) OD and over, for lengths up to 24 ft (7.3 m). Longer cut lengths add 1/8 in. (3.2 mm) for each 10 ft (3 m) or part of it, up to a maximum additional 1/2 in. (12.7 mm). Random lengths and their variations are agreed on the order.
Seamless nickel alloy 201 pipe carries caustic alkalis, neutral salt solutions and dry chlorine or fluorine service through chemical, chlor-alkali and power plants, where commercially pure nickel resists neutral and reducing media.

Chlor-alkali plants run the feed, transfer and discharge lines around their caustic evaporators in this low-carbon nickel, with every run ordered by NPS and schedule and tested piece by piece.

Sodium hydroxide travels from production units to storage tanks and loading points through transfer lines in the grade, which resists attack by caustic alkalis along the whole route through the plant.

Process heat-transfer units that contain caustic liquors use the pipe for the connections carrying those liquors in and out, with the annealed or stress-relieved condition fixed on the order before fabrication starts.

Plants handling fluorine and hydrogen fluoride pipe the gas in this nickel under dry conditions, and the same material serves dry chlorine and hydrogen chloride lines in chemical production.

Potash and soda ash production routes neutral salt solutions through process circuits built from this pipe, and the commercially pure nickel stands up to those neutral salts throughout the circuit.

Power stations install the pipe in their caustic handling units, where each length arrives hydrostatically or electrically tested and covered by the certificate and test report that ASTM B161 requires.

Seamless Nickel 201 pipe is indicatively priced at USD 25 to 55 per kg. As commercially pure nickel, it follows the nickel market almost directly, and within the range the size and schedule, the delivery condition, the test on each piece, cut lengths and the lot size decide where an order falls. Small NPS and light schedules take more cold-working and annealing passes per kilogram than heavier sizes. A size list with quantities gets a firm price.

ASTM B161 Nickel 201 seamless pipe is cold-worked and tested at our plant, 154 Moo.1 Map Phai, Ban Bueng, Chonburi 20170, Thailand. Our office at 89/18 Moo.15 Enterprize Park, Bangna-Trad Road, Bang Kaeo, Bang Phli, Samut Prakan 10540, Thailand, prepares quotations, certificates and shipping documents. We supply projects across Thailand and export to Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines and India.
Nickel 201 is the low-carbon grade chosen for hot caustic service. ASTM B161 caps its carbon at 0.02%, against 0.15% for UNS N02200, and that cap is what the grade name stands for on a drawing. The trade-off is lower strength minimums in every condition, so check the design against the 201 rows before the line is fixed.
Tensile strength is 50 000 psi (345 MPa) annealed and 60 000 psi (415 MPa) stress-relieved, against 55 000 and 65 000 psi for UNS N02200. Yield minimums are 12 000, 10 000 and 30 000 psi against 15 000, 12 000 and 40 000 psi in the matching rows. The elongation minimums are the same for both grades.
For chemical analysis a lot is one heat. For the tension test it is pipe of the same heat, nominal size (length aside) and condition, heat-treated in one batch-furnace charge or at the same continuous-furnace temperature, time and speed. A lot never exceeds 20 000 lb (9100 kg), or 500 lb (227 kg) where material cannot be identified by heat.
Pieces 3/4 in. (19.0 mm) OD and larger and longer than 3 ft (914 mm) carry the manufacturer's name or brand, the material name or UNS number, the letters ASTM with the specification number, the heat number and the nominal size. Smaller or shorter pieces are marked individually or on a tag fixed to the bundle or box.
That the pipe was manufactured, tested and inspected to ASTM B161 and that the results on representative samples meet its requirements, with a report of those results attached. Ours gives the heat analysis against the seven limits, the lot tension result and the hydrostatic or electric test of each piece, issued as EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request).
The alloy name or UNS number, ASTM B161 with its year of issue, the condition and finish, the standard pipe size and schedule, cut or random length, and the quantity in feet or pieces. Add the hydrostatic or electric test if you want to fix it, whether check-analysis samples are needed, and any tests you intend to witness.
