Nickel 201 Seamless Tubes Manufacturer in Thailand

ASTM B163 is the Standard Specification for Seamless Nickel and Nickel Alloy Condenser and Heat-Exchanger Tubes, and for Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code work its related specification is ASME SB-163, so a code line reads ASME SB-163 UNS N02201 seamless tube. The standard lists the grade as low-carbon nickel, UNS N02201: Nickel 201 is the commercial name, and the UNS number is the designation our certificate reports. B163 also lists other nickel alloys, among them UNS N08825, which we make as Incoloy 825 seamless tubes, each alloy with its own composition and tensile rows. ASTM B161 also covers seamless tube in UNS N02201, while our heat-exchanger tube in this grade is made and certified to ASTM B163. Process lines in the same grade use Nickel 201 seamless pipes, which are ordered by standard pipe size and schedule.

Every tube is either hydrostatically tested or given a nondestructive electric test, eddy current or ultrasonic, at our option unless the purchase order names the method, and a tube that shows leakage is rejected. One chemical analysis and one tension test are made for each lot, and the same lot supplies the flare test: one end is expanded with a 60° included-angle tool until the specified outside diameter has grown by 30%, and it must show no cracking through the wall. Results for each Nickel 201 seamless tube consignment are reported on an EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) material test certificate. Tests you wish to witness are agreed in the purchase contract, and third-party inspection is available on request.

Seamless 2.4068 Nickel Tube Chemistry to ASTM B163

The heat analysis of every seamless 2.4068 nickel tube order is reported against the seven limits below. Only nickel is a minimum, determined arithmetically by difference; carbon, at 0.02% maximum, is the limit that defines the low-carbon grade.

  • NiNickel, 99.0 min
  • FeIron, 0.40 max
  • MnManganese, 0.35 max
  • SiSilicon, 0.35 max
  • CuCopper, 0.25 max

UNS N02201201

ElementLimit per ASTM B163 / ASME SB-163 (%)
Ni (Nickel)99.0 min
Cu (Copper)0.25 max
Fe (Iron)0.40 max
Mn (Manganese)0.35 max
C (Carbon)0.02 max
Si (Silicon)0.35 max
S (Sulfur)0.01 max

Carbon is the only limit in which the grade differs from Nickel 200 seamless tubes; the other six are shared. If you plan a product (check) analysis on received tube, ASTM B163 places it wholly with the purchaser.

Tensile and Hardness Limits for ASME SB-163 UNS N02201 Seamless Tube

B163 gives low-carbon nickel one row of minimums for each condition, with no split by tube size, and adds a hardness ceiling that applies only to annealed ends.

ConditionTensile Strength, min, ksi (MPa)Yield Strength (0.2% offset), min, ksi (MPa)Elongation in 2 in. or 50 mm (or 4D), min (%)Rockwell Hardness of Annealed Ends
Annealed50 (345)12 (83)40No requirement
Stress-relieved60 (414)30 (207)15B62 max

Stress-relieved tube is held to the higher tensile and yield minimums and annealed tube to the higher elongation, so the condition named on the order fixes the row the lot tension result must meet.

Annealed Ends on Stress-Relieved Alloy 201 Seamless Tube

ASTM B163 lists UNS N02201 annealed or stress-relieved, and its nonmandatory appendix on conditions adds a third choice, stress-relieved with annealed ends: the same stress-relieved tube with its ends annealed. An order for Alloy 201 seamless tube in that condition states the length to be annealed and whether one end or both are treated. The B62 hardness ceiling then applies to those annealed ends only, while the body of the tube is accepted on the stress-relieved tensile row.

Equivalent Designations of Nickel 201

B163 identifies the grade only as low-carbon nickel, UNS N02201. The European, Japanese and British designations below help read a foreign drawing or datasheet and make no statement of conformity with those national standards.

  1. Commercial nameNickel 201, also written Alloy 201
  2. ASTM B163 / ASME SB-163 (USA)UNS N02201
  3. Europe (W.Nr.)2.4068
  4. Europe (EN material name)LC-Ni 99
  5. Japan (JIS)NW 2201
  6. UK (BS)NA 12

Whichever of these a drawing quotes, the tube is ordered and certified as UNS N02201.

Ordering Seamless WNR 2.4068 Tube by Outside Diameter and Wall

Seamless WNR 2.4068 tube is offered from 6 mm to 457 mm OD with walls from 1 mm to 65 mm, in single lengths up to 22 m. Each ASTM B163 Nickel 201 seamless tube line gives the outside diameter, the minimum or average wall in inches rather than a gage number, and the length.

For tube from 1/2 to 3 in. (12.7 to 76.2 mm) OD, ASTM B163 prints these permitted variations for low-carbon nickel:

Nominal OD, in. (mm)OD Variation, in. (mm)Average Wall Variation (%)Minimum Wall Variation (%)
1/2 to 5/8 (12.7 to 15.9), excl+0.005 (0.13), -0±12.5+25.0, -0
5/8 to 1 1/2 (15.9 to 38.1), incl±0.005 (0.13)±10.0+20.0, -0
Over 1 1/2 to 3 (38.1 to 76.2), incl±0.010 (0.25)±10.0+22.0, -0

Swipe sideways to see the full table.

A wall variation applies to the wall as ordered, either minimum or average, never to both. Individual diameter readings include ovality; on thin-wall tube, with a wall of 3% of the OD or less, the mean diameter must fall inside the table while single readings may exceed it by a further 1/2% of the nominal OD. Eccentricity is limited to plus or minus 10% of the measured average wall of the section. For sizes outside these three bands, the applicable tolerances are written into our offer, and U-bent tube can be added to the order as the B163 supplementary requirement S1.

Seamless Nickel 201 Tube Price per kg

Seamless Nickel 201 tube is indicatively priced at USD 25 to 60 per kg. As commercially pure nickel, it follows the nickel market almost directly, and within the range the outside diameter, wall and tolerance, the delivery condition, the test on each tube, cut lengths and the quantity decide where an order falls. Small OD and thin wall need more cold-drawing and annealing passes per kilogram. A size list with tube counts gets a firm price.

Frequently Asked Questions: Ordering Nickel 201

Should the wall be ordered as a minimum or as an average?

Order minimum wall when the exchanger design is based on the thinnest permitted wall. On 5/8 to 1 1/2 in. (15.9 to 38.1 mm) tube, a minimum-wall order allows nothing under the figure and up to 20.0% over it, while an average-wall order allows 10.0% either way. Convert a gage-number callout to a decimal wall in inches first.

How is the hardness of annealed ends checked?

By the Rockwell test or an equivalent method, with B62 as the maximum for low-carbon nickel, on 3% of each lot of tubes with annealed ends and on no other tube. For walls under 0.050 in. (1.27 mm), ASTM B163 suggests the Rockwell superficial or Vickers test, since the regular Rockwell test needs caution on thin material.

How much longer than ordered may a cut tube be?

Up to 1/8 in. (3.2 mm), or up to 1/4 in. (6.4 mm) for lengths over 30 ft (9.1 m); ASTM B163 states both as plus figures. Each tube must also be reasonably straight and free of bends or kinks. Order the shortest length the bundle drawing accepts; single lengths are offered up to 22 m.

When is the hydrostatic test made on tube with annealed ends?

Before the ends are annealed. The stress-relieved tube is pressure tested first, and its tension test is also taken before end annealing. The test pressure is 1000 psi (6.9 MPa), provided the resulting fiber stress stays within the allowable value the standard sets for the alloy and condition, and the tube must show no evidence of leakage.

Does ASTM B163 require a certificate with every order?

Only when the purchase order or contract specifies one; a report of the test results is also furnished only when specified. We issue an EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) certificate with every consignment regardless, giving the heat analysis, the lot tension and flare results, the annealed-end hardness where it applies and the test made on each tube.

What changes if the drawing calls for Nickel 200 instead?

The carbon limit moves from 0.02% to 0.15% maximum, and the B163 minimums rise to 55 ksi (379 MPa) tensile and 15 ksi (103 MPa) yield annealed, or 65 ksi (448 MPa) and 40 ksi (276 MPa) stress-relieved. Annealed ends may reach B65 instead of B62. Elongation minimums, tolerances and tests stay the same.

Which tubes are grouped into one lot for flaring and tension testing?

Tubes of the same heat, nominal size apart from length, and condition (temper); chemical analysis is lotted by heat alone. One end of 1% of the finished lengths in each lot is flared, or one length when the lot has fewer than 100 tubes. Tube of unidentified heat is lotted in batches of not more than 500 lb (230 kg).
