Stainless Steel 317L Seamless Tubes Manufacturer in Thailand

Boiler, superheater and heat-exchanger tube made without a seam is what ASTM A213 was written for, ASME adopts it as SA-213 for code work, and TP317L sits among its austenitic grades. Not one austenitic tube leaves the mill untreated: it is either solution treated in an operation of its own or, when the hollow is quenched straight off the hot-forming line, dropped individually into water or cooled as fast by another route while still at or above the solution temperature. A213 calls 127 mm the top of the diameters usually furnished and then permits larger ones wherever the rest of its requirements are satisfied, which is how our range reaches 257 mm. Where a requisition is drawn up around nominal bore and schedule numbers, the item belongs with our stainless steel 317L seamless pipes.

No ASTM A213 TP317L stainless steel seamless tube is released untested. Each one takes either the hydrostatic test or a nondestructive electric check by eddy current or ultrasonic means, and the pick is ours wherever the order stays silent on it. From every heat, one billet or one tube goes for a product analysis. Lot sampling then adds a tension test, on a single tube for lots of 50 and fewer and on two tubes beyond that, a hardness reading taken from two tubes, and the flattening and flaring pair, whose flattening specimens come off both ends of one finished tube and whose flaring specimens come off both ends of another. Below a 1.65 mm wall no hardness requirement applies at all. Everything lands on the EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) certificate, which travels with the raw material certificate, the 100% PMI record, heat treatment charts and the measured size and roughness sheet; attendance by an independent inspector and a laboratory test certificate come on request.

Low-Carbon Analysis of Seamless S31703 Stainless Steel Tube

The grade rests on one restriction and one addition: carbon stops at 0.035 % while molybdenum runs from 3.0 to 4.0 %, alongside chromium of 18.0 to 20.0 % and nickel of 11.0 to 15.0 %. Every heat of a seamless S31703 stainless steel tube is analyzed against the figures below, and a lone figure is a ceiling.

  • CrChromium, 18.0 to 20.0
  • NiNickel, 11.0 to 15.0
  • MoMolybdenum, 3.0 to 4.0
  • MnManganese, 2.00 max
  • SiSilicon, 1.00 max

UNS S31703317L

ElementLimit under A213 TP317L (%)
C (Carbon)0.035 max
Mn (Manganese)2.00 max
P (Phosphorus)0.045 max
S (Sulfur)0.030 max
Si (Silicon)1.00 max
Cr (Chromium)18.0 to 20.0
Ni (Nickel)11.0 to 15.0
Mo (Molybdenum)3.0 to 4.0

Nitrogen, and every element without a row of its own, carries no A213 requirement for this grade, so those eight limits are what the certificate is read against. The 0.035 % ceiling is the whole point of the L suffix: with less carbon free in the metal, chromium carbide has less to form from at the grain boundaries beside a weld, which is why assemblies that enter service as welded are specified in this grade.

Strength and Hardness Limits for SS 317L Seamless Tube

For TP317L, A213 prints one set of figures that holds at every wall the mill draws, from 0.89 mm to 12.7 mm. Each SS 317L seamless tube lot is judged against them on samples taken after solution treatment.

PropertyRequirement for TP317L
Tensile strength515 MPa (75 ksi) minimum
Yield strength205 MPa (30 ksi) minimum
Elongation measured over 50 mm (2 in.)35 % minimum
Hardness, Brinell or Vickers192 HBW / 200 HV maximum
Hardness, Rockwell B90 HRB maximum

The 35 % elongation entry is TP317L's own, and TP317 is required to reach 34 % in that same A213 table. Which of the three hardness scales is used, Brinell, Vickers or Rockwell, follows the wall thickness of the tube in hand, and whichever is chosen the value goes onto the lot record.

Equivalent Designations of Stainless Steel 317L

Grade 317L arrives on drawings under these numbers and names.

  1. UNSS31703
  2. ASTM A213 / ASME SA-213 gradeTP317L
  3. European number (WNR)1.4438
  4. Japan (JIS)SUS317L
  5. China (GB)022Cr19Ni13Mo3

UNS S31703 and the A213 grade name TP317L are what we manufacture and certify to. The European number 1.4438 serves as a cross-reference for checking an incoming drawing, and because it is absent from the grades of the European seamless tube standard, a requisition written around it is quoted and supplied as ASTM A213 TP317L.

Small-Bore Sizes and Diameter Limits on Seamless WNR 1.4438 Tube

Absorber and bleach plant bundles sit at the small-bore end of what the mill runs: 6.35 mm up to 257 mm across, 0.89 mm up to 12.7 mm of wall, and lengths out to 22 m. Under 50 mm the cold-finished diameter is held closely enough to matter at the tube sheet, so those three bands come first.

Cold-Finished Diameter Limits Below 50 mm

Specified outside diameterPlus, mmMinus, mm
Under 25 mm (under 1 in.)0.10.11
25 to 40 mm incl. (1 to 1-1/2 in. incl.)0.150.15
Over 40 mm up to 50 mm (over 1-1/2 up to 2 in.)0.20.2

These three bands come from the dimensional variations permitted on seamless tubing supplied to A213, and they are what each small-bore order is measured against. Each band applies to the tube as it leaves the mill, before any bending, expanding, swaging or polishing is done to it, and it is the mean of the readings round one cross section that has to fall inside it: a cold-finished austenitic size below 50.8 mm carries a further allowance of 0.25 mm either side of nominal on any single reading. Above 50 mm the permitted band widens with the diameter, and the figure that governs a seamless WNR 1.4438 tube at your size is confirmed with the quotation.

How a Lot Is Defined and What That Costs in Tests

One size out of one heat makes a lot. Tubes annealed in a batch furnace are lotted by furnace charge instead, and when a continuous furnace did the work, or the hollows were quenched directly off the hot-forming line, a cap by size applies.

Tube size in the lotMaximum tubes in one lot
25.4 mm outside diameter and under125
Over 25.4 mm up to 50.8 mm75
50.8 mm and over, wall under 5.1 mm75
50.8 mm and over, wall 5.1 mm and over50

Those caps are what fix the test count on a long run of ASTM A213 stainless steel 317L seamless tube. Small-bore tube ordered in quantity therefore breaks into several lots, each one bringing its own tension, hardness, flattening and flaring tests, so the lot structure is worth settling at inquiry rather than at inspection.

Where 317L Stainless Steel Seamless Tube Fits Against 317 and 316L

Carbon is the whole of the difference from grade 317. A213 caps it at 0.035 % for TP317L and at 0.08 % for TP317, while the chromium, nickel and molybdenum ranges and the tensile and yield minimums are shared between them. 317 seamless tubes remain the usual pick where the wall is heavy and the bundle is rolled into the tube sheet with no weld in the corrosion zone.

Against grade 316L the difference is molybdenum. A213 gives TP316L 2.00 to 3.00 % with chromium of 16.0 to 18.0 % and nickel of 10.0 to 14.0 %, so 316L seamless tubes are the leaner answer where the cooling water stays clean. TP317L takes the same low-carbon approach into 3.0 to 4.0 % molybdenum, and A213 asks more of it on strength as well, setting TP317L at 515 MPa and 205 MPa where TP316L has to reach only 485 MPa and 170 MPa.

Industrial Applications of Seamless 1.4438 Stainless Steel Tube

A 317L stainless steel seamless tube earns its cost where chloride, sulfuric, acetic or phosphoric streams would pit a leaner grade, and where the assembly is welded up and commissioned without a further anneal.

Absorber Internals in Desulfurization Plant duty for Stainless Steel 317L seamless tube

Absorber Internals in Desulfurization Plant

Spray headers and absorber exchangers in flue gas desulfurization units meet acid chloride condensate, and molybdenum of 3.0 to 4.0 % with a 0.035 % carbon ceiling suits internals joined by welding on site.

Chlorine Dioxide Bleach Plant Exchangers duty for Stainless Steel 317L seamless tube

Chlorine Dioxide Bleach Plant Exchangers

Bleach plant exchangers and liquor heaters working in chlorine dioxide solutions take the grade, drawn cold-finished, where the tight small-bore band keeps every ferrule and tubesheet hole on size.

Condensers on Corrosive Cooling Water duty for Stainless Steel 317L seamless tube

Condensers on Corrosive Cooling Water

Power station condensers and the auxiliary circuits around them handle cooling water that carries chlorides, and tube for that duty arrives solution treated, pickled and straight, ready to be rolled into the tube sheet.

Acid Coolers in Chemical and Petrochemical Plant duty for Stainless Steel 317L seamless tube

Acid Coolers in Chemical and Petrochemical Plant

Coolers, reboilers and reactor service exchangers on sulfuric, acetic and phosphoric acid streams use the grade, ordered on a minimum-wall basis, which keeps the delivered thickness at or above the figure on the drawing.

Offshore and Desalination Service Lines duty for Stainless Steel 317L seamless tube

Offshore and Desalination Service Lines

Offshore process modules and desalination trains place the grade in brine and seawater-side exchanger service, supplied in lengths that match the bundle drawing with the ends left clean for the tube sheet.

Sour and Chloride-Rich Gas Treating duty for Stainless Steel 317L seamless tube

Sour and Chloride-Rich Gas Treating

Gas treating and gathering units take the grade in cooler and exchanger duty on sour, chloride-rich streams, and each heat and lot is documented with its finishing condition, wall basis and test results.

Price per kg of Seamless Stainless Steel 317L Tube

Take USD 4.5 to 9 per kg as the indicative band for a seamless stainless steel 317L tube rather than as an offer. Molybdenum of 3 to 4 % and the nickel content set the floor, and because grade 317L runs in smaller volumes than the 316 grades, a short lot, an uncommon size or an exchanger length outside the usual run pushes a line toward the upper figure. Send the size list and the band turns into a dated quotation.

317L Seamless Tube Specification Questions

Why does the certificate for a TP317L seamless tube show 0.035 % carbon?

Because 0.035 % is the carbon maximum printed for TP317L in the A213 composition table, and it carries no footnote reducing it for thin walls or small diameters. The rounder 0.03 % often quoted for the grade is not the A213 figure; the limit each heat is released against is the one the table prints.

Which grade suits an absorber bundle that stays in the as-welded condition?

TP317L. Its 0.035 % carbon ceiling leaves little carbon free to form chromium carbide at the grain boundaries next to a weld, so the joint keeps its intergranular corrosion resistance with no solution anneal after fabrication. Where a specification wants that proved, add the A262 Practice E test to the order.

Which standard governs a grade 317L seamless tube order?

ASTM A213, with ASME SA-213 as its code counterpart. A269 is sometimes quoted for stainless tubing but carries no TP317L row, so an order in this grade is written to A213 alone and the certificate names that specification.

What sets the number of tubes in a heat-treatment lot?

Size and heat: a single size from a single heat. A batch furnace charge is lotted on its own. After a continuous furnace or a direct quench the caps are 125 tubes at 25.4 mm outside diameter and under, 75 up to 50.8 mm, 75 at 50.8 mm and over below a 5.1 mm wall, and 50 above it.

What sensitising treatment comes before an ordered intergranular corrosion test?

That one is settled between us. The A262 Practice E test is added when the order names it, and for a low-carbon grade carrying 3 % or more molybdenum, which TP317L is, whether a sensitising treatment is applied first is a matter for agreement. State your requirement with the inquiry.

How closely is the outside diameter held on small-bore cold-finished tube?

Under 25 mm the band is 0.1 mm over and 0.11 mm under. From 25 to 40 mm it is 0.15 mm either way, and over 40 up to 50 mm it is 0.2 mm either way. Each band holds the mean reading at a cross section; cold-finished seamless 1.4438 stainless steel tube under 50.8 mm adds 0.25 mm ovality.

Which outside diameters, walls and lengths are produced in grade 317L?

6.35 to 257 mm across, 0.89 to 12.7 mm of wall declared as a minimum or an average, and straight lengths out to 22 m cut to the figure on your layout. Give all three with the tube count for each line so the quotation covers the whole bundle.

Which documents travel with a 317L seamless tube consignment?

Each heat and each lot is covered by its own EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) certificate, which carries the heat analysis against the A213 TP317L limits alongside the lot tension, hardness, flattening and flaring results and the hydrostatic or electric test record. Heat treatment charts, PMI data, the dimensional report and a packing list come with it.
