Seawater Cooling Exchanger Bundles
Offshore platforms and FPSOs cool their process streams in shell-and-tube heat exchangers that run on seawater. Seamless S32760 tube bundles carry that chloride-bearing cooling water through the tube bore.
ASTM A789 / ASME SA-789 / UNS S32760 / W.Nr. 1.4501
Thaida Stainless Steel Manufacturing (Thailand) Co., Ltd., based in Ban Bueng, Chonburi, Thailand, produces ASTM A789 UNS S32760 super duplex steel seamless tubes designed for seawater-cooled exchangers, chemical injection lines in sour systems and acid gas scrubbing units. Alloyed with tungsten and copper as well as chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen, the grade carries the European number WNR 1.4501. Sister grades appear in our super duplex steel seamless tubes overview, and S32760 quotations go out from our sales team in Bang Phli, Samut Prakan.

EN 10204 3.1 certificate / 3.2 on request
Sizes are specified by outside diameter and wall thickness. Mark each wall as an average or a minimum figure, since the two bases carry separate tolerances and the chosen basis appears in the marking of every length. Our mill produces the envelope below in this grade.
Each ASTM A789 UNS S32760 seamless tube we ship is also made to ASME SA-789, the ASME edition of the same specification, which governs its chemistry, heat treatment, tests, tolerances and marking. A789 is written for ferritic/austenitic tubing in general corrosive service, and stress corrosion cracking resistance is the property its scope singles out. Seamless WNR 1.4501 tube to EN 10216-5 is how European specifications designate the same steel. If the same line continues as NPS and schedule piping, order it as UNS S32760 seamless pipes under ASTM A790.
ASTM A789 calls for one of two checks on every UNS S32760 seamless tube: hydrostatic testing, or a nondestructive electric test (for example eddy current or ultrasonic). We select between them when your order leaves it open. Product analysis is made on each heat. Lot testing covers tension (one tube from a lot of up to 50 tubes, two from a larger lot), flaring, and hardness on two tubes, and a lot that mixes heats is tested heat by heat. Every result is reported on the EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) certificate, and inspection by a third party of your choice is available on request.
Tungsten and copper, each held at 0.50 to 1.00 %, set this grade apart from UNS S32750 seamless tubes, which have no tungsten requirement and allow copper only up to 0.50 %. ASTM A789 also sets a pitting index floor of 41 for every heat of seamless S32760 super duplex steel tube, worked out as Cr + 3.3 × (Mo + 0.5 × W) + 16 × N. Single values below are maximums; ranges run from minimum to maximum.
UNS S32760S32760
| Element | UNS S32760, ASTM A789 (%) |
|---|---|
| C (Carbon) | 0.030 max |
| Mn (Manganese) | 1.00 max |
| P (Phosphorus) | 0.030 max |
| S (Sulfur) | 0.010 max |
| Si (Silicon) | 1.00 max |
| Ni (Nickel) | 6.0 to 8.0 |
| Cr (Chromium) | 24.0 to 26.0 |
| Mo (Molybdenum) | 3.0 to 4.0 |
| N (Nitrogen) | 0.20 to 0.30 |
| Cu (Copper) | 0.50 to 1.00 |
| W (Tungsten) | 0.50 to 1.00 |
ASTM A789 gives this grade one set of minimums with no split by wall or diameter, and the figures are the same as ASTM A790 sets for pipe. Wall calculations for a super duplex steel S32760 seamless tube therefore start from the values below.
| Property | ASTM A789 Requirement |
|---|---|
| Tensile Strength, min | 750 MPa (109 ksi) |
| Yield Strength, min | 550 MPa (80 ksi) |
| Elongation in 50 mm (2 in.), min | 25% |
| Hardness, max (Brinell) | 310 HBW |
| Hardness, max (Rockwell) | 32 HRC |
| Hardness, max (Vickers) | 310 HV |
A 550 MPa minimum yield lets an exchanger or injection line in super duplex steel S32760 seamless tube work with a thinner wall at a given pressure than a lower-strength grade would need, which saves weight. For cooling duties where a 22Cr grade is accepted, duplex UNS S32205 seamless tubes are made to the same standard with a 485 MPa minimum yield. Long exposure at elevated temperature can embrittle steels of this family, a caution written into the scope of ASTM A789, so settle the upper design temperature in your design review.
American and European standards identify the grade as follows. ASTM assigns it no common name, unlike some other super duplex grades.
Treat 1.4501 as a cross-reference. When a drawing calls only for seamless 1.4501 super duplex tube, add UNS S32760 and ASTM A789 to the order, since those set the limits each tube is tested against. The number 1.4410 belongs to UNS S32750, so a requisition that pairs S32760 with 1.4410 needs correcting before release.
S32760 super duplex stainless steel seamless tube leaves our mill at 6 to 720 mm OD with 1 to 65 mm walls, in lengths reaching 22 m. The A789 permitted variations reproduced below stop at 203.2 mm OD. For bigger diameters, write the OD and wall limits you require into the inquiry, and our quotation confirms them.
| OD Range, mm (in.) | OD Tolerance, mm | Wall, Average Basis | Wall, Minimum Basis | Cut Length, mm |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Below 12.7 (1/2) | ±0.13 | ±15% | +30% / -0 | +3 / -0 |
| 12.7 to below 38.1 (1/2 to 1-1/2) | ±0.13 | ±10% | +20% / -0 | +3 / -0 |
| 38.1 to below 88.9 (1-1/2 to 3-1/2) | ±0.25 | ±10% | +20% / -0 | +5 / -0 |
| 88.9 to below 139.7 (3-1/2 to 5-1/2) | ±0.38 | ±10% | +20% / -0 | +5 / -0 |
| 139.7 to 203.2 incl. (5-1/2 to 8) | ±0.76 | ±10% | +20% / -0 | +5 / -0 |

Two exceptions change the wall columns. For walls of 19 mm and above, or a bore no wider than 60% of the OD, average-wall orders are held to ±12.5% and minimum-wall orders to +25.0% / -0. Small-bore tubes under 12.7 mm ID, where mandrel drawing is not possible, take ±15% or +30% / -0 instead.
Thin-walled sizes have their own ovality allowance: under 1.6 mm wall from 12.7 to 38.1 mm OD, under 2.4 mm from 38.1 to 88.9 mm and under 3.8 mm from 88.9 to 203.2 mm. On these tubes, the largest and smallest measured diameters may each deviate by up to twice the OD tolerance above, provided the mean diameter stays inside it.
Super duplex steel UNS S32760 seamless tubes are chosen where chlorides, acids or sour fluids reach the tube wall. These are typical duties.

Offshore platforms and FPSOs cool their process streams in shell-and-tube heat exchangers that run on seawater. Seamless S32760 tube bundles carry that chloride-bearing cooling water through the tube bore.

Small-bore tubing carries corrosion inhibitors and other treatment chemicals into wells and flowlines that handle sour gas or crude, so the line has to withstand both the injected chemical and hydrogen sulfide.

Sulfur recovery and amine treating units strip acid gas from hydrocarbon streams. The grade serves the exchangers and small-bore lines in these units, which carry wet acid gas and loaded amine solvent.

Wet flue gas desulfurization at power stations circulates acidic scrubber liquor through absorbers, coolers and recycle circuits. Heat exchange and liquid lines in contact with that liquor are tubed in S32760.

Pulp mill bleaching stages and liquor circuits handle aggressive bleaching chemicals and process liquors. Exchangers and transfer lines in those stages use seamless S32760 tubing to hold up against both media.

Chemical plants producing plastics and fertilizers specify S32760 for distillation column heat exchangers and other process coolers whose tubes are exposed to acidic media on the process side.

Through its heat analysis. ASTM A789 makes the W-modified pitting index, which must reach 41 or more, a requirement in its own right, alongside every element range, and each heat is checked against it. The chromium, molybdenum, tungsten and nitrogen results behind the index are reported on the EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) certificate.
It can be, within the limits of NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156, where UNS S32760 is accepted for H2S-containing service as a qualifying material, subject to hardness and heat-treatment requirements. Name that standard on your inquiry, so hardness is checked against its acceptance limits as well as the ASTM A789 maximum of 32 HRC.
Name one only if your design code or client standard requires it; otherwise ASTM A789 leaves the method to the mill. On the hydrostatic route, the pressure is 441.2 × wall ÷ OD in MPa, capped at 7 MPa and held for 5 seconds or more. For an added check with air, order supplementary requirement S1.
Yes, in straight lengths up to 22 m. The plus-only cut-length tolerance in the table applies to lengths up to 7.3 m; beyond that, ASTM A789 lets the plus limit grow by 3 mm per additional 3 m (a part length counts as a full step), but never by more than 13 mm in total.
Choose S32760 when your project specification names the tungsten- and copper-bearing grade, or when ductility matters: ASTM A789 sets 25% minimum elongation for S32760 against 15% for S32750. S32750 has the higher minimum tensile strength, 800 MPa against 750 MPa. Both share the same A789 pitting index floor of 41.
Average wall, the ASTM A789 default, so a tube list without a basis is made and accepted on average wall. Write minimum wall against any line that needs it, and if one inquiry mixes bundle tubes and small-bore lines on different bases, give the basis for each line separately.
ASTM A789 allows Vickers hardness on tubing with an ID below 9.00 mm or a wall below 1.65 mm, and the S32760 limit is 310 HV. For tube smaller than 12.7 mm OD, strip specimens are used for the tension test and the strip elongation values apply.
