Process Coolers and Condensers
Chemical and petrochemical plants tube shell-and-tube coolers and condensers with the grade when each tube end is seal welded to the tubesheet and the exchanger runs in the as-welded state.
ASTM A213 / ASME SA-213 / UNS S30403 / W.Nr. 1.4307
Thaida Stainless Steel Manufacturing (Thailand) Co., Ltd., based in Ban Bueng, Chonburi, Thailand, produces ASTM A213 TP304L stainless steel seamless tubes designed for condenser and process cooler bundles whose tubes are seal welded or strength welded into the tubesheet. Under A213 the grade, UNS S30403 and WNR 1.4307, is held to 0.035% carbon maximum, which limits chromium carbide formation beside each weld. Our Bang Phli, Samut Prakan office quotes this grade as part of our stainless steel seamless tubes family.

EN 10204 3.1 certificate / 3.2 on request
Each 304L stainless steel seamless tube size is set by its outside diameter and wall thickness; A213 reads the wall as a minimum unless your order asks for average wall. Settle the basis before you list sizes, since each one carries its own tolerance.
ASTM A213, with its ASME twin SA-213, is written for seamless tubes used in boilers, superheaters and heat exchangers, and austenitic tubes must leave the mill heat treated. Each ASTM A213 TP304L stainless steel seamless tube is solution treated, then pickled free of scale unless it has been bright annealed. Tube marking states the grade, the specification, whether it was hot or cold finished and whether the wall is minimum or average. European project specifications list this steel in EN 10216-5 as 1.4307, and a requisition written for seamless WNR 1.4307 tube is quoted as A213 TP304L, with 1.4307 as a cross-reference. Headers and process lines in the grade, sized by NPS and schedule, are produced as 304L seamless pipes.
Each length is tested individually, hydrostatically or by eddy current or ultrasonic examination, with the choice left to us when the order is silent. Every lot also receives one tension test for up to 50 tubes and two for larger lots, a flattening test at both ends of one tube, a flaring test at both ends of another, and hardness readings on two tubes. Lot results go onto an EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) certificate together with the raw material certificate, 100% PMI results, heat treatment charts and size measurements, and an independent inspector can be appointed on request.
The heat analysis of every UNS S30403 seamless tube is reported against the TP304L limits below (% by weight; single values are maxima). Molybdenum and nitrogen carry no A213 limit for this grade, and the nickel range for tube is 8.0 to 12.0%.

Stainless Steel 304L carries the designations below in American, European, Japanese, Chinese and Russian standards.
The European number 1.4307 pairs with the steel name X2CrNi18-9, the combination EN 10216-5 lists for seamless tube. These European names serve as cross-references to UNS S30403; the tube itself is made and tested to ASTM A213 TP304L.
Our seamless 1.4307 stainless steel tube range spans OD 6.35 to 257 mm and wall 0.89 to 12.7 mm, with lengths reaching 22 m. The permitted variations below cover tubes up to 225 mm OD; larger diameters have their tolerance settled at the quotation stage.
Cold-finished tube is held to the limits in the table. Hot-finished tube takes +0.4 / -0.8 mm up to 100 mm OD, +0.4 / -1.2 mm over 100 to 200 mm, and +0.4 / -1.6 mm over 200 to 225 mm.
| Specified OD, mm (in.) | Over, mm | Under, mm |
|---|---|---|
| Under 25 (under 1) | 0.1 | 0.11 |
| 25 to 40 incl. (1 to 1-1/2) | 0.15 | 0.15 |
| Over 40 to under 50 (over 1-1/2 to under 2) | 0.2 | 0.2 |
| 50 to under 65 (2 to under 2-1/2) | 0.25 | 0.25 |
| 65 to under 75 (2-1/2 to under 3) | 0.3 | 0.3 |
| 75 to 100 incl. (3 to 4) | 0.38 | 0.38 |
| Over 100 to 200 incl. (over 4 to 7-1/2) | 0.38 | 0.64 |
| Over 200 to 225 incl. (over 7-1/2 to 9) | 0.38 | 1.14 |
These limits include out-of-roundness, except under the separate ovality rules for thin-wall tube and for cold-finished tube under 50.8 mm OD, and apply before the tube is expanded, swaged, bent or otherwise formed. For cold-finished tube below 50.8 mm OD, the largest and smallest diameters measured in one cross section may each lie up to 0.25 mm from the nominal OD, while their mean must still meet the table.
A minimum-wall order has no under-tolerance; only the plus side varies with condition, OD and wall. Cold-finished tube whose bore is 60% of OD or smaller takes the hot-finished rows:
| Condition and OD | Wall to 2.4 mm | Over 2.4 to 3.8 mm | Over 3.8 to 4.6 mm | Over 4.6 mm |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cold finished, 38.1 mm and under | +20% / 0 | +20% / 0 | +20% / 0 | +20% / 0 |
| Cold finished, over 38.1 mm | +22% / 0 | +22% / 0 | +22% / 0 | +22% / 0 |
| Hot finished, 100 mm and under | +40% / 0 | +35% / 0 | +33% / 0 | +28% / 0 |
| Hot finished, over 100 mm | Not listed | +35% / 0 | +33% / 0 | +28% / 0 |
Swipe sideways to see the full table.
On an average-wall order, cold-finished tube is held to ±10% of the specified wall. Hot-finished tube ordered on average wall takes +20 / -12.5% from 10.3 to 73.0 mm OD; above 73.0 mm OD it takes +22.5 / -12.5% when the wall is 5% of OD or less, and +15 / -12.5% when the wall exceeds 5% of OD.
Cut lengths carry no minus tolerance. The plus limit is 3 mm for cold-finished tube under 50.8 mm OD, and 5 mm for cold-finished tube of 50.8 mm OD and over and for all hot-finished tube. Beyond 7.3 m, add 3 mm to the plus limit for every further 3 m or fraction of it, up to an added 13 mm in total.
Where tube ends are welded to a tubesheet and the bundle is put into service without a later anneal, the carbon content of the tube governs sensitization in the heat-affected zone. Seamless WNR 1.4307 tube, at 0.035% carbon maximum, limits the chromium carbide precipitation that would otherwise lower intergranular corrosion resistance next to the weld. If your specification asks for proof against sensitization, add the intergranular corrosion test of ASTM A262, Practice E, as a supplementary requirement; it is run only when ordered.
TP304 allows up to 0.08% carbon and carries higher A213 minimum tensile and yield strengths of 515 and 205 MPa, so 304 seamless tubes fit bundles where strength sets the wall thickness and no welding is done near the tube ends. Choose 304L once the joints are welded and the bundle stays as welded. A heat that qualifies under both grade ranges at once, in analysis and in test results, can also carry a dual certification covering 304 and 304L; raise it at inquiry if your drawings name both grades.
TP304L carries no molybdenum requirement, so it gives up the pitting and crevice protection that molybdenum brings when cooling water or process fluid holds chlorides. For that duty, 316L seamless tubes add molybdenum and keep a low-carbon chemistry for welded joints. If chloride stress corrosion cracking worries you, TP304L can instead be ordered as stress-relieved annealed tube under A213 supplementary requirement S1, treated at 815 to 900 °C (1500 to 1650 °F) after roll straightening. Tell us how much chloride each side of the exchanger sees, and our quotation proposes the grade that fits.
Seamless stainless steel 304L tube goes into heat transfer and instrument service where tubes are joined by welding and every joint must keep its corrosion resistance.

Chemical and petrochemical plants tube shell-and-tube coolers and condensers with the grade when each tube end is seal welded to the tubesheet and the exchanger runs in the as-welded state.

Dairy and beverage plants fit SS 304L seamless tube in pasteurization heat exchangers and clean-in-place circuits, where low carbon limits sensitization at the welded connections of headers and manifolds.

Power stations run instrumentation tubing, boiler auxiliary circuits and steam and water distribution lines in 304L, including small sizes cold drawn for close dimensional accuracy.

Desalination and water treatment units inside power plants take the tube for distillate and treated-water lines, ordered by OD and minimum or average wall to suit each circuit.

Petrochemical units use the grade for reactor auxiliary tubing and distillation column internals, where the tube arrives solution treated and either pickled or bright annealed for fabrication.

Furnace and thermal equipment builders use the grade for flue gas handling tubes and heat-treatment equipment tubes, ordered in cut lengths that match the fabrication drawing.

Yes. On a minimum-wall order the whole tolerance sits on the plus side, up to +20% / 0 for cold-drawn tube to 38.1 mm OD, so the delivered wall sits at or above the figure you specify and weight per meter follows it. An average-wall order at ±10% stays centered on the nominal wall.
Yes. Under A213, a tube set into a boiler or tubesheet has to survive expanding and beading with no cracks or flaws showing, and each lot is flared with a 60° tool at both ends of one tube to check end ductility. On the welded side, low carbon reduces sensitization risk beside each tubesheet weld.
A213 allows 0.040% carbon instead of 0.035% for small-diameter or thin-wall sizes of this grade that need many drawing passes. For small or thin sizes, agree the carbon limit at inquiry; the heat analysis on the certificate shows the actual carbon of every heat.
Yes. A213 makes a product analysis mandatory: a single billet or tube from every heat is analyzed and must meet the TP304L limits, carbon included. If it fails, two more billets or tubes are retested, and a heat that fails the retest is rejected unless each tube is tested individually.
Yes, under a separate rule. When the wall is 3% of OD or less, the OD limit is applied to the midpoint between the highest and lowest diameter readings, and ovality may reach 0.5 mm on tubes up to 25.4 mm OD or 2.0% of OD above that. Check tubesheet hole clearances against those figures.
Up to 257 mm OD, with walls from 0.89 to 12.7 mm and lengths to 22 m. A213 describes tube up to 127 mm OD as the usual range and permits larger diameters when all other requirements are met.
