Writing the Order for Seamless Nickel Alloy K500 Tube
Seamless nickel alloy K500 tube is supplied to the purchase order rather than to an ASTM tube specification. The order therefore carries the details a product standard would otherwise fix, and three of them decide what arrives: the delivery condition, the test plan and the tolerances.
Delivery Condition
The usual condition is solution-treated and age-hardened (precipitation-hardened). Aluminum and titanium are what allow the alloy to be age-hardened, and in that condition K500 is considerably stronger than Monel 400. Other conditions are supplied by agreement, and the certificate states the condition of the tubes delivered, with heat treatment charts available as part of the documents. Where a design calls for an age-hardened nickel alloy from another family, we also produce Inconel 718 seamless tubes.
Test Plan on the Certificate
No test regime is fixed by a product standard for this alloy, so each test is an order item. Eddy current and ultrasonic testing are equal options for nondestructive examination; name the method your inspection plan uses. Hydrostatic testing and positive material identification (PMI) are added where the duty calls for them. Every test on the order is reported on the EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) certificate, and third-party inspection is available on request.
Dimensions and Agreed Tolerances
Each seamless 2.4375 tube line is dimensioned as outside diameter x wall thickness, in metric or imperial units, with the length stated. The OD and wall tolerances are agreed on the order and confirmed in our quotation, and a size measurement report can be supplied with the tubes.
Comparing the Order with Monel 400
ASTM B165 covers UNS N04400 only, so our Monel 400 seamless tubes are ordered with that standard's tests and tolerances already defined. Where a line is specified by pipe size rather than tube OD, the same alloy is supplied as Monel K500 seamless pipes, ordered on the same principles.

What should each line of a K500 purchase order include?
List UNS N05500, seamless tube, OD x wall, length and quantity on every line, then add the delivery condition, the agreed OD and wall tolerances, the tests and the certificate level, EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request). Since no product standard fills gaps for this alloy, a requirement left off the order is not part of the supply.
Which tests can be ordered on seamless alloy 2.4375 tube?
Eddy current or ultrasonic testing, hydrostatic testing and PMI. Eddy current and ultrasonic are equal options, so one nondestructive method per line is enough unless your inspection plan names both. A third-party inspector can witness the tests on request, and the results appear on the certificate with the heat number of the tubes tested.
How are OD and wall tolerances fixed for a K500 order?
Line by line, from your drawing or data sheet. Close OD and wall tolerances on small diameters or thin walls change the price, so state them at the inquiry stage rather than after the quotation; the agreed values are then confirmed in our offer.
Can seamless K500 tube be ordered in another condition?
Yes, by agreement. Solution-treated and age-hardened (precipitation-hardened) is the usual condition; any other condition is written on the order and stated on the certificate. If the tubes will be bent, expanded or heat treated after delivery, describe that route in the inquiry so the agreed condition suits it.
Should a heat exchanger be tubed in Monel 400 or Monel K500?
Choose K500 when the tube must carry more load than Monel 400 allows. The two alloys offer similar corrosion resistance, and the aluminum and titanium in K500 let it be age-hardened to considerably higher strength.
Is K500 a good choice for instrumentation lines?
Yes. Instrumentation lines in acidic oil and gas conditions and in corrosive chemical process streams are established K500 duties.
