Alkylation Units
Gasoline alkylation units use the tube to handle and transfer sulfuric and hydrofluoric acids, relying on the alloy's resistance to hydrofluoric acid and to deaerated sulfuric acid at moderate concentrations.
ASTM B165 / ASME SB-165 / UNS N04400 / W.Nr. 2.4360
In Ban Bueng, Chonburi, Thaida Stainless Steel Manufacturing (Thailand) Co., Ltd. produces Monel 400 seamless tubes to ASTM B165 / ASME SB-165 for heat exchangers, reboilers and heating coils that handle seawater, brine, hydrofluoric acid or alkalis. The alloy is the nickel-copper grade UNS N04400, written W.Nr. 2.4360 on European drawings, and it is one of the two grades in our Monel seamless tubes range. Offers, certificates and export papers are issued from our office in Bang Phli, Samut Prakan.

EN 10204 3.1 certificate / 3.2 on request
Each tube is ordered by outside diameter and by wall, stated as nominal or as minimum, in cut or random lengths. The rows below give the standard, the two conditions it lists for UNS N04400 and the checks every length passes before dispatch.
ASTM B165 is titled Standard Specification for Nickel-Copper Alloy Seamless Pipe and Tube and covers UNS N04400 as cold-worked seamless pipe and tube; for Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code work it refers to its related specification, ASME SB-165. Because the standard identifies the alloy by its UNS number, an ASME SB-165 400 seamless tube is reported as N04400 on the certificate, with Monel 400 kept as the commercial name on the material list. Both product forms share this one standard: tube is sized by outside diameter and wall, while Monel 400 seamless pipes are ordered by standard pipe size and schedule.
Every tube passes either a hydrostatic test or a nondestructive electric test by eddy current or ultrasonic, and the method is the mill's choice unless the order names one. Under the hydrostatic route, tube of 1/8 in. (3 mm) OD and larger with a wall of 0.015 in. (0.38 mm) and over is tested to an internal pressure of 1000 psi (6.9 MPa), provided the resulting wall stress stays within the allowable value the standard sets, and a tube that leaks is rejected. ASTM B165 makes a manufacturer's certification and a report of the test results part of every order. We issue both as an EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) certificate, and third-party inspection is available on request.
ASTM B165 sets nickel as a minimum only, 63.0% determined arithmetically by difference, holds copper between 28.0 and 34.0% and caps five further elements. The right-hand column gives the product (check) analysis variations that apply when the purchaser runs a check analysis on UNS N04400 seamless tube after delivery, a test the standard makes wholly the purchaser's responsibility.

European and Chinese drawings sometimes show Monel 400 under a national number rather than its UNS designation. ASTM B165 uses the UNS number alone, so the W.Nr. and GB entries below help read such a callout and serve as a cross-reference only.
A drawing that calls for a seamless alloy 2.4360 tube is quoted and reported against N04400, the designation of record in ASTM B165.
Our range for seamless WNR 2.4360 tube runs from 6 mm to 457 mm OD and from 1 mm to 65 mm wall, in single lengths up to 22 m, and every size is confirmed line by line in the offer.
ASTM B165 gives the permissible variations for cold-worked tube in seven bands of nominal outside diameter, running from over 0.400 in. (10 mm) to 8 5/8 in. (219 mm). The wall column that applies is the one matching the basis on the order.
| Nominal OD, in. (mm) | OD Tolerance, in. (mm) | Nominal Wall Tolerance | Minimum Wall Tolerance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Over 0.400 (10) to 5/8 (16), excl | ±0.005 (0.13) | ±15.0% | +30% / 0 |
| 5/8 (16) to 1 1/2 (38), incl | ±0.0075 (0.19) | ±10.0% | +22% / 0 |
| Over 1 1/2 (38) to 3 (76), incl | ±0.010 (0.25) | ±10.0% | +22% / 0 |

The table values apply to individual measurements, including eccentricity and, with two exceptions, out-of-roundness. On tube whose nominal wall is 3% of the nominal OD or less, the mean OD must meet the table, while individual readings, ovality included, may exceed the plus and minus values by 0.5% of the nominal OD. On tube over 4 1/2 in. (114 mm) OD with a nominal wall above 3% of the OD, the mean OD must meet the table and no individual reading may exceed twice the tabulated variation.
| Outside Diameter | Permissible Variation in Cut Length |
|---|---|
| Under 2 in. (50.8 mm) | +1/8 in. (3.2 mm) / 0 |
| 2 in. (50.8 mm) and over | +3/16 in. (4.8 mm) / 0 |
These variations apply to straight tube in cut lengths up to and including 24 ft (7.3 m). Each further 10 ft (3.0 m), or fraction of it, allows an additional over-tolerance of 1/8 in. (3.2 mm), up to a maximum additional 1/2 in. (12.7 mm). Every tube must be reasonably straight and free of bends and kinks, and its ends are plain cut and deburred.
A complete order line for Alloy 400 seamless tube covers the items ASTM B165 asks the purchaser to state:
Alloy: UNS N04400 (Monel 400).
Specification: ASTM B165, with its year of issue.
Size: outside diameter, with the wall given as nominal or as minimum.
Length: cut to length or random.
Quantity: feet or number of pieces.
Condition and finish: annealed or stress-relieved.
Test: hydrostatic or nondestructive electric, plus the test pressure if it differs from the standard one.
Check analysis: whether samples for product (check) analysis are to be furnished.
Witnessing: which tests, if any, the purchaser's inspector will attend.
Name one wall basis per line, matched to the way the bundle was designed. A minimum-wall line accepts no reading below the stated wall, whereas a nominal-wall line allows the same percentage either side of it.
For chemical analysis, a lot is one heat. For every other test, a lot is all material of the same heat, nominal size (excepting length) and condition, and material that cannot be identified by heat is grouped in lots of not more than 500 lb (227 kg) in one condition and nominal size. Each lot of seamless Monel 400 tube gives one chemical analysis and one tension test, cut from material in its final condition and tested in full tubular size whenever possible, otherwise as a longitudinal strip or the largest round specimen. The pressure or electric test, by contrast, covers each piece in every lot.
Monel K500 seamless tubes start from the same nickel-copper base with aluminum and titanium added, so the alloy can be age-hardened to a higher strength, and its corrosion resistance is similar to that of Monel 400. ASTM B165 covers UNS N04400 only, so for K500 the chemistry, condition and tests are written into the purchase order instead. Monel 400 is hardened only by cold working and is supplied annealed or stress-relieved against fixed minimums, which makes seamless nickel alloy 400 tube the grade to name when a bundle has to be ordered and inspected to an ASTM tube standard.
For duties that do not call for a nickel-copper alloy, stainless steel 316L seamless tubes are the lower-alloy option in our range.
Seamless alloy 2.4360 tube serves alkylation units, crude column transfer lines, amine reboilers, pickling bath heating coils, brine heaters and seawater scrubbers, and feedwater and steam-generator service.

Gasoline alkylation units use the tube to handle and transfer sulfuric and hydrofluoric acids, relying on the alloy's resistance to hydrofluoric acid and to deaerated sulfuric acid at moderate concentrations.

Refineries run the tube as transfer lines that carry corrosive vapors and crude oil fractions away from distillation columns, specifying the outside diameter and the wall basis for every line.

In gas sweetening, the reboilers that concentrate monoethanolamine (MEA) solution are tubed with N04400, supplied as straight cut lengths whose overrun stays inside the cut-length tolerance.

Steel descaling lines form heating coils from the tube and submerge them in heated acid baths, where resistance to the pickling acid keeps the heating element in service.

Desalination brine heaters and flue-gas scrubbers that wash with seawater take the tube for its resistance to rapidly flowing brackish water or seawater, in the annealed or stress-relieved condition.

Power plants order the tube for lines that carry feedwater or raise steam, sizing each line by outside diameter and wall rather than by pipe size and schedule.

Seamless Monel 400 tube is indicatively priced at USD 24 to 55 per kg. The nickel market sets most of where a quotation lands, with copper second. Outside diameter, wall and tolerance then decide how many cold-drawing passes each kilogram needs, so small-bore, thin-wall tube sits toward the top of the range. The annealed or stress-relieved condition, the pressure or electric test on every piece, cut lengths and lot size move a quote within it, and a size list with tube counts brings a firm price.
Indicative only. Send your sizes and specification to Thaida for a firm quotation.
Monel 400 seamless tubes are drawn at our factory at 154 Moo.1 Map Phai, Ban Bueng, Chonburi 20170, Thailand, and offers, certificates and shipping papers are issued from 89/18 Moo.15 Enterprize Park, Bangna-Trad Road, Bang Kaeo, Bang Phli, Samut Prakan 10540, Thailand. Projects in Thailand are supplied directly, and we export to Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines and India.
It falls in the 5/8 to 1 1/2 in. (16 to 38 mm) band of ASTM B165: ±0.19 mm on OD, and ±10.0% on nominal wall or +22% / 0 on minimum wall. At 150 mm OD the band changes to ±0.51 mm on OD, with ±12.5% on nominal wall or +28% / 0 on minimum wall.
When the pressure or thermal design is based on the thinnest wall the tube may have. A minimum-wall order accepts nothing below the stated wall and up to 22% to 30% above it, depending on OD, while a nominal-wall order allows ±10.0% to ±15.0%. Keep to one basis on each line of the order.
At the shortest length the bundle drawing accepts, because ASTM B165 allows overrun only, never a short tube. On lengths over 24 ft (7.3 m) the permitted overrun grows in steps, so leave that margin at the tubesheet or header. Single lengths are offered up to 22 m.
One per lot, and a tension-test lot is one heat, one nominal size and one condition. A single heat drawn into three sizes, all annealed, therefore gives three tension tests but only one chemical analysis, since the chemical lot is the heat alone. Ordering one of those sizes stress-relieved as well adds a fourth tension test.
Yes, when the order asks for it. ASTM B165 allows marking on the material or on the package, label or tag, plus any other information the contract or order defines, so per-tube marking of heat number and size can be specified. Without that line, B165 lets the marking go on the package, label or tag instead.
When the tube carries media the alloy is selected for: hydrofluoric acid, deaerated sulfuric acid at moderate concentrations, alkalis, or rapidly flowing brackish water or seawater, as in alkylation units, brine heaters and seawater scrubbers. Where none of these is present, 316L is the lower-alloy option. Send the media and concentration with your inquiry and we confirm the grade.
By agreement, stated in our offer and on the order acknowledgement. The cold-worked bands of ASTM B165 run only from over 10 mm to 219 mm OD, while our range spans 6 mm to 457 mm, so a size outside the bands carries the OD and wall tolerance written on the order.
