Superheater and Reheater Banks in Power Boilers
Power generation boilers use the alloy for superheater and reheater tubing exposed to high-pressure steam, where ASTM B407 assigns UNS N08810 to service that needs creep and rupture resistance.
ASTM B407 / ASME SB-407 / UNS N08810 / W.Nr. 1.4958
Held to an average grain size of ASTM No. 5 or coarser in the annealed condition, Incoloy 800H seamless tubes from Thaida Stainless Steel Manufacturing (Thailand) Co., Ltd. are produced at our Ban Bueng, Chonburi factory to ASTM B407 / ASME SB-407 in UNS N08810, the alloy European drawings list as W.Nr. 1.4958. They serve superheater, reheater, furnace and heat exchanger duty within our Incoloy seamless tubes range, and our office in Bang Phli, Samut Prakan prepares quotations and export documents.

EN 10204 3.1 certificate / 3.2 on request
Each tube in this range is sized by outside diameter and wall. The table sets those sizes beside the delivery condition, heat-treatment minimum and test plan that ASTM B407 fixes for UNS N08810.
ASTM B407 is titled Standard Specification for Nickel-Iron-Chromium Alloy Seamless Pipe and Tube, and ASME SB-407 is its related specification for Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code work, so a Code project can call up the ASME SB-407 800H seamless tube under that number. The standard names each alloy by UNS number only: UNS N08810 is the designation marked on the tube and shown on the certificate, while Incoloy 800H stays the commercial name. B407 places UNS N08800 in general service and UNS N08810 and N08811 in service where creep and rupture resistance is required. Tube is ordered by its actual dimensions, whereas Incoloy 800H seamless pipes follow standard pipe size and schedule.
Every length of our ASTM B407 Incoloy 800H seamless tubes passes either a hydrostatic test or a nondestructive electric test. Chemical analysis, a tension test and a grain-size test are each made once per lot, and the results are issued on an EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) material test certificate traced to the heat number. Third-party inspection is available on request.
ASTM B407 holds this grade to its own column of limits. Carbon, at 0.05 to 0.10%, is the only element whose range differs from Alloy 800; nickel, chromium, aluminum, titanium and every other limit match it. Iron is determined arithmetically by difference. The certificate for each UNS N08810 seamless tube reports the heat against these limits.

The lot tension test on each Alloy 800H seamless tube order is read against this row.
Beyond the carbon minimum, ASTM B407 sets two further requirements for UNS N08810 that Alloy 800 does not carry. The final heat treatment is 2050 °F (1121 °C) minimum, and annealed tube must show an average grain size of ASTM No. 5 or coarser. The standard states that UNS N08810 and N08811 are annealed to develop a controlled grain size for optimum properties in the creep and rupture service it assigns them.
| Control | Requirement for UNS N08810 | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Final heat treatment | 2050 °F (1121 °C) minimum | All material |
| Average grain size | ASTM No. 5 or coarser | One test per lot |
| Carbon | 0.05 to 0.10% | One chemical analysis per lot |
| Tension | 65 000 psi (450 MPa) tensile, 25 000 psi (170 MPa) yield, 30% elongation | One test per lot |
| Hydrostatic or nondestructive electric test | Method at the manufacturer's option unless the order names one | Every tube |
Every seamless nickel alloy 800H tube we ship carries the lot grain-size result on its certificate next to the heat analysis and tension figures, and the certificate gives the condition as annealed, the term ASTM B407 uses for this alloy.
Incoloy 800H is identified differently on American, European and Japanese drawings. ASTM B407 uses the UNS number; the W.Nr. and JIS entries are cross-references for reading a foreign callout, not claims of conformity to those national standards.
We make seamless WNR 1.4958 tube from 6 mm to 457 mm OD, with walls from 1 mm to 65 mm and single lengths up to 22 m. ASTM B407 prints permitted variations on the specified OD and the average wall. For cold-finished tube its bands run from 12.7 mm to 168.3 mm OD, with diameter tolerances from ±0.127 mm in the smallest band to ±0.635 mm in the largest. For hot-finished tube they run from 63.5 mm to 234.9 mm OD at ±0.787 mm or ±1.19 mm, with the wall held to ±12.5%.
Within any one cross section of cold-finished tube, the wall may vary by no more than ±10% of the measured average wall of that section. For sizes of seamless WNR 1.4958 tube outside those bands, the dimensional limits are confirmed with the quotation.
Incoloy 800 seamless tubes are made to the same ASTM B407 and share every chemistry limit except carbon, which runs to 0.10% with no minimum. UNS N08800 has no grain-size requirement and no minimum heat-treatment temperature, and B407 assigns it to general service. Its strength also depends on condition: cold-worked annealed 800 is held to 75 000 psi (520 MPa) tensile and 30 000 psi (205 MPa) yield. Where a boiler or exchanger design calls for creep and rupture resistance, the seamless 1.4958 tube is the one of the two that B407 places in that service.
Incoloy 800HT seamless tubes keep the 800H strength row and grain-size requirement but follow a narrower aluminum and titanium window, a higher carbon minimum and a higher final heat-treatment minimum. Order the UNS number your design code names: an 800H order is certified against UNS N08810.
Seamless alloy 1.4958 tube goes into boilers, furnaces, exchangers and process heaters, where tubes are bought by OD and wall and the grain-size control of ASTM B407 is part of the specification.

Power generation boilers use the alloy for superheater and reheater tubing exposed to high-pressure steam, where ASTM B407 assigns UNS N08810 to service that needs creep and rupture resistance.

Industrial furnaces build radiant tubes and muffles from this grade for its resistance to carburization in the heating zone, and each lot is grain-size checked before the tubes leave our mill.

Heat exchangers take seamless lengths as bundle tubes that transfer heat between hot gases or fluids without mixing them, each tube having passed a hydrostatic or electric test.

Petrochemical plants specify the grade for pyrolysis tubing in hydrocarbon cracking furnaces, including ethylene pyrolysis furnace tubes, where the tube faces oxidizing and reducing process environments.

Pulp and paper mills fit digester liquor heaters with these tubes, together with piping that carries hot, corrosive fluids through the pulping process.

Seamless Incoloy 800H tube is indicatively priced at USD 20 to 50 per kg. The nickel market sets most of that level, because nickel is a major part of the alloy, and the final heat treatment and per-lot grain-size test required for this grade are part of every order. OD, wall, length, lot size and any added inspection decide where a quote falls in the range. Send your tube list with quantities for a firm price.
Indicative only. Send your sizes and specification to Thaida for a firm quotation.

It is the pass mark for the annealed structure: each lot of UNS N08810 material must average ASTM No. 5 or a coarser grain, and a finer average fails ASTM B407. The requirement sits in the standard itself, so it applies to every 800H order even when the purchase order never mentions grain size.
Yes, provided it is annealed. ASTM B407 lists UNS N08810 as hot-finished annealed or cold-worked annealed. The plain hot-finished condition, without an anneal, appears only against UNS N08800, so every tube of this grade is annealed before it ships, whichever route formed it.
UNS N08810 with ASTM B407 or ASME SB-407, two controlling dimensions such as OD and average wall, the length, the quantity and the certificate level. If the boiler code needs the hydrostatic test rather than the electric test, name it, since B407 otherwise leaves the method to the manufacturer. A nonstandard test pressure may also be stated.
Chemistry and heat treatment. ASTM B407 sets UNS N08811 at 0.06 to 0.10% carbon, aluminum and titanium each 0.25 to 0.60% with a combined 0.85 to 1.20%, and 2100 °F (1149 °C) minimum, against 0.05 to 0.10%, 0.15 to 0.60% each with no combined limit, and 2050 °F (1121 °C) for UNS N08810.
No. W.Nr. 1.4876 is the European cross-reference for Alloy 800, UNS N08800, while Incoloy 800H corresponds to W.Nr. 1.4958 and JIS NCF800H. Because ASTM B407 identifies the grade only as UNS N08810, check any 800H callout against that UNS number before the order is placed.
Yes, by agreement. ASTM B407 lets tube be specified in two dimensions: OD with average or minimum wall, ID with average wall, or OD with ID, and OD with minimum wall is furnished on agreement between maker and purchaser. On hot-finished tube ordered to minimum wall, the wall tolerance becomes +28.5%, -0.
457 mm OD, with walls from 1 mm to 65 mm and single lengths up to 22 m; the smallest OD is 6 mm. Above 234.9 mm OD the tube lies outside every ASTM B407 tolerance band, so the dimensional limits for those sizes are agreed with the quotation.
