Ethylene and Propylene Cracking Furnaces
Radiant tubes in ethylene and propylene cracking furnaces are made from seamless 1.4959 tube, which arrives with its grain-size result and the furnace charts of its final heat treatment.
ASTM B407 / ASME SB-407 / UNS N08811 / W.Nr. 1.4959
UNS N08811 seamless tubes, known commercially as Incoloy 800HT seamless tubes, are produced by Thaida Stainless Steel Manufacturing (Thailand) Co., Ltd. at our Ban Bueng, Chonburi mill to ASTM B407 / ASME SB-407, and each tube passes a hydrostatic or nondestructive electric test before release. Cross-referenced as W.Nr. 1.4959, the alloy is one of seven grades in our Incoloy seamless tubes range, and every lot is checked for chemistry, tensile properties and grain size. Our Bang Phli, Samut Prakan office prepares quotations and certificates.

The table gives our size window for this grade, how a tube line item is dimensioned, the condition and heat treatment fixed for UNS N08811, and the tests run on each tube and on each lot.
ASTM B407 is the Standard Specification for Nickel-Iron-Chromium Alloy Seamless Pipe and Tube, and ASME SB-407 is its counterpart for Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code applications. UNS N08811 is the ASTM B407 / ASME SB-407 designation marked on the tube and on its certificate, while Incoloy 800HT is the commercial name used on drawings and requisitions. Tube is specified in two dimensions, length excepted, whereas Incoloy 800HT seamless pipes made to the same standard are ordered by pipe size and schedule.
Results are issued on an EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) material test certificate that carries the heat number, UNS N08811 and the outcome of every test described below. Third-party inspection is arranged whenever your order calls for it.
ASTM B407 sets four checks for N08811: one on every piece and three on every lot. Every result is reported on the certificate, the per-lot results against the lot they cover.
| Test | Frequency | Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Hydrostatic or nondestructive electric test | Every tube | Mill's choice of test unless the purchase order names one |
| Chemical analysis | One per lot | ASTM B407 limits for UNS N08811, including aluminum plus titanium |
| Tension test | One per lot | Tensile strength, yield strength and elongation minimums |
| Grain size | One per lot | Average grain size of ASTM No. 5 or coarser |
The hydrostatic test is run at 1000 psi (6.9 MPa), provided that pressure keeps the tube wall within its allowable stress, and any tube that leaks is rejected. Grain size is measured to ASTM E112 by the planimetric, comparison or intercept method, and the intercept method settles any dispute.
A lot for the chemical analysis is one heat. For the tension and grain-size tests, a lot is tube of one heat, one nominal size (length excepted) and one condition; tube annealed in a batch furnace also shares one furnace charge, and tube annealed in a continuous furnace shares one temperature, time and speed setting. No tension or grain-size lot exceeds 9100 kg (20 000 lb).
Each heat of UNS N08811 seamless tube is analyzed against the ASTM B407 limits below. The aluminum plus titanium line is a requirement in its own right, separate from the individual aluminum and titanium ranges.
UNS N08811800HT
| Element | Limit per ASTM B407 / ASME SB-407 (%) |
|---|---|
| Ni (Nickel) | 30.0 to 35.0 |
| Cr (Chromium) | 19.0 to 23.0 |
| Fe (Iron) | 39.5 min |
| C (Carbon) | 0.06 to 0.10 |
| Al (Aluminum) | 0.25 to 0.60 |
| Ti (Titanium) | 0.25 to 0.60 |
| Al + Ti (Aluminum + Titanium) | 0.85 to 1.20 |
| Mn (Manganese) | 1.5 max |
| Si (Silicon) | 1.0 max |
| Cu (Copper) | 0.75 max |
| P (Phosphorus) | 0.045 max |
| S (Sulfur) | 0.015 max |
Iron is calculated by difference, so its 39.5% minimum is confirmed once every other element has been measured.
One tension test per lot confirms that each ASME SB-407 800HT seamless tube meets these minimums. ASTM B407 sets them in a single row for UNS N08810 and N08811, and they apply to hot-finished annealed and cold-worked annealed tube alike.
| Condition | Tensile Strength, min, MPa (psi) | Yield Strength (0.2% offset), min, MPa (psi) | Elongation in 2 in. or 50 mm (or 4D), min, % |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hot-finished annealed or cold-worked annealed | 450 (65 000) | 170 (25 000) | 30 |

Two process requirements stand behind these figures: a final heat treatment of 2100 °F (1149 °C) minimum and an average grain size of ASTM No. 5 or coarser. The standard describes N08811 as annealed to develop a controlled grain size.
Incoloy 800HT appears under different numbers on American, European and Japanese drawings. ASTM B407 and ASME SB-407 identify it only by its UNS number; the European and Japanese entries below serve as cross-references.
A drawing that cites 1.4959 or NCF800HT is matched to N08811 at order entry, and the certificate is issued against the UNS number.
Every seamless Incoloy 800HT tube shares the per-tube test and the per-lot chemical and tension tests with 800H and 800, the two other 800-family grades in ASTM B407. The rows below are where the three part ways.
| ASTM B407 Requirement | UNS N08800 (800) | UNS N08810 (800H) | UNS N08811 (800HT) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grain-size test, one per lot | No requirement | ASTM No. 5 or coarser | ASTM No. 5 or coarser |
| Final heat treatment, minimum | No requirement (condition only) | 2050 °F (1121 °C) | 2100 °F (1149 °C) |
| C (Carbon), % | 0.10 max | 0.05 to 0.10 | 0.06 to 0.10 |
| Al (Aluminum), % | 0.15 to 0.60 | 0.15 to 0.60 | 0.25 to 0.60 |

Incoloy 800H seamless tubes go through the same test regime, grain-size check included, so a seamless alloy 1.4959 tube differs from 800H only in four chemistry lines and the higher heat-treatment minimum. Incoloy 800 seamless tubes carry no grain-size test and no heat-treatment minimum, and ASTM B407 places UNS N08800 in general service, while N08810 and N08811 serve where creep and rupture resistance is required.
We produce seamless WNR 1.4959 tube from 6 mm to 457 mm OD with walls from 1 mm to 65 mm, in lengths up to 22 m, and confirm each size against our production plan when we quote. Each line item names two dimensions, length excepted: outside diameter with average wall, inside diameter with average wall, or outside and inside diameter. Outside diameter with minimum wall is supplied by agreement.
ASTM B407 prints tolerance bands for cold-finished tube from 12.7 to 168.3 mm OD, where wall eccentricity in any cross section stays within ±10% of the measured average wall, and for hot-finished tube from 63.5 to 234.9 mm OD. Dimensional limits for sizes outside those bands are confirmed size by size with the quotation.
A cut length is never delivered short. Cold-worked tube may run up to 3.2 mm (1/8 in.) over the ordered length, hot-finished tube up to 4.8 mm (3/16 in.), and any length over 9.1 m (30 ft) up to 6.4 mm (1/4 in.).
ASTM B407 lists the finishes normally supplied: cold-finished tube annealed and pickled, or annealed with a ground outside diameter, and hot-finished tube pickled, unpickled, or machined on both diameters. Plain ends, cut and deburred, are standard.
The tube goes into fired heaters, exchangers and recovery equipment in plants where creep and rupture resistance decides the alloy.

Radiant tubes in ethylene and propylene cracking furnaces are made from seamless 1.4959 tube, which arrives with its grain-size result and the furnace charts of its final heat treatment.

Outlet pigtails on steam methane reformers are cut from UNS N08811 seamless tube, each piece hydrostatic or electric tested and traceable through its heat number to the lot results.

Waste-to-energy plants run their superheater tubes in seamless nickel alloy 800HT tube, and the same pollution-control sites use the alloy in scrubbers and stacks.

Sulfuric and nitric acid processes use the tube for heaters and process piping, with each lot's chemical analysis confirming the aluminum plus titanium window before fabrication starts.

Paper mills fit the tube to digesters and their heat exchangers, ordering it in two dimensions so that outside diameter and wall match the tube sheet design.

In oil and gas recovery, the alloy serves in downhole equipment and in the heat exchangers of production facilities, with tension and grain-size results reported for every lot shipped.

Alloy 800HT seamless tube is indicatively priced at USD 20 to 50 per kg. The price follows the nickel market first; holding the carbon and aluminum plus titanium limits, the minimum final heat treatment and the per-lot grain-size test is part of every order, while OD, wall, length, lot size and any added inspection decide where a quotation falls in the band. Send your tube list for a firm price.
Indicative only. Send your sizes and specification to Thaida for a firm quotation.

Either a hydrostatic test or a nondestructive electric test, one of the two on each tube. ASTM B407 leaves the choice to the mill unless your purchase order names one, so state it when your exchanger specification calls for a particular test. The certificate then records that test for every tube in the lot.
Yes. ASTM B407 allows the purchase order to state a test pressure other than the standard requirement. Write the pressure against each line item, together with any hold time you need beyond the 5 second minimum, and every tube of that line is then tested at your figure, provided it keeps the tube wall within its allowable stress.
Eddy current testing to ASTM E426 or E571 and ultrasonic testing to ASTM E213 are equal options for the nondestructive electric test. Whichever method is used takes the place of the hydrostatic test for that tube, so if your inspection plan requires a particular method, write it on the purchase order.
One of each per lot. Each nominal size forms its own lot, as does each heat and each condition, so an order covering several sizes from one heat carries one tension result and one grain-size result for every size. A large single-size order can also split into more than one lot at the weight limit.
Specify the UNS number your design data names. Both grades pass the same tests on every tube and every lot, grain size included, and share the 450 MPa tensile and 170 MPa yield minimums. N08811 adds the 0.85 to 1.20% aluminum plus titanium window and a 2100 °F (1149 °C) heat-treatment minimum against 2050 °F (1121 °C) for N08810.
Our name, UNS N08811, the letters ASTM with the B407 number, the heat number and the nominal size, on every tube of 19.0 mm OD and larger that is longer than 914 mm. Smaller or shorter tubes are marked individually or by a tag on the bundle or box, and each package label adds the condition.
The EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) material test certificate gives the heat analysis against each ASTM B407 limit, including the aluminum plus titanium sum, the lot's tension and grain-size results, the condition, and the hydrostatic or electric test result for every tube. Heat treatment charts travel with it, plus a third-party inspection report when ordered.
Yes, by agreement. ASTM B407 accepts tube specified as outside diameter with minimum wall when the mill and purchaser agree, alongside the average-wall options. For hot-finished tube ordered this way, the wall tolerance is +28.5% and -0, so the tube never runs thinner than the wall you order.
