ASTM B165, Standard Specification for Nickel-Copper Alloy Seamless Pipe and Tube, covers UNS N04400 as cold-worked seamless pipe and tube, annealed or stress-relieved. Every tube passes a hydrostatic test or a nondestructive electric test, chosen by us unless the order names one, and each lot gets a chemical analysis and a tension test. B165 makes a manufacturer's certification and a report of the test results mandatory, so every ASTM B165 seamless Monel tube ships with both.
ASTM B163, Standard Specification for Seamless Nickel and Nickel Alloy Condenser and Heat-Exchanger Tubes, lists UNS N04400 as its only nickel-copper alloy, annealed or stress-relieved. Written for condenser and heat-exchanger service in the smaller, lighter-wall exchanger sizes, it prints its own tolerance table and cut-length rule, and adds a flare test on a sample from each lot to the hydrostatic or electric test that every tube receives. An ASTM B163 seamless Monel tube can also be ordered U-bent, a supplementary requirement that applies only when the order invokes it.
UNS N05500 appears in neither standard, and no ASTM seamless tube specification lists it. A seamless 2.4375 tube is therefore made to the purchase order, which takes the place of a standard and sets what the EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) certificate reports.
ASTM B829, Standard Specification for General Requirements for Nickel and Nickel Alloys Seamless Pipe and Tube, lists B165 and B163 among the product standards it serves. For Monel 400 its main contribution is the nondestructive electric test, run as eddy current or ultrasonic examination, while B165 and B163 keep their own lot, test, certification and marking clauses, and a product standard's own clause always governs.
