Alloy B2 Seamless Tubes Manufacturer in Thailand

The grade answers to a single product specification. ASTM B622 carries the title Standard Specification for Seamless Nickel and Nickel-Cobalt Alloy Pipe and Tube, and ASME SB-622 is its code counterpart. No grade name appears anywhere inside it, the alloy being identified by UNS number alone, so N10665 is the designation marked on the tube and reported on the certificate, and the names Alloy B2 and Alloy B-2 are commercial ones. The specification splits its two forms by how each is ordered: tube by outside diameter, minimum or average wall and length, against nominal size for Alloy B2 seamless pipes.

A material test certificate to EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) covers every lot released against an order. Mill test results beyond the three ASTM B622 requires, and independent inspection, are arranged where an order asks for them, so name on the inquiry whatever evidence your own procedure expects and it is priced in rather than added afterwards.

Chemical Composition of UNS N10665 Seamless Tube

Chromium is capped at 1.0% in this alloy rather than used as an alloying addition, and the corrosion resistance comes from molybdenum instead, at 26.0 to 30.0%. Carbon stops at 0.02%, which holds carbide precipitation down at the grain boundaries and keeps a tube-to-tubesheet weld resistant in the as-welded condition.

The limits every heat of UNS N10665 seamless tube is held to are these:

  • NiNickel, Remainder
  • MoMolybdenum, 26.0 to 30.0
  • FeIron, 2.0 max
  • CrChromium, 1.0 max
  • MnManganese, 1.0 max

UNS N10665B2

ElementLimit per ASTM B622 / ASME SB-622 (%)
Ni (Nickel)Remainder
Mo (Molybdenum)26.0 to 30.0
Fe (Iron)2.0 max
Cr (Chromium)1.0 max
Mn (Manganese)1.0 max
Co (Cobalt)1.0 max
Si (Silicon)0.10 max
P (Phosphorus)0.04 max
S (Sulfur)0.03 max
C (Carbon)0.02 max

Every figure is a maximum unless a range appears against it, and the specification sets no requirement at all for niobium, copper, titanium, vanadium or tungsten in this alloy. Where the bundle also meets oxidizing species, the chromium-bearing answer within the same specification is Alloy C22 seamless tubes.

Mechanical Properties of Seamless Nickel Alloy B2 Tube

Room-temperature minimums are what the specification fixes, and one table in it serves both product forms, so a tube and a pipe of this grade answer to the same three figures.

PropertyValueUnit
Tensile Strength, min760 (110)MPa (ksi)
Yield Strength (0.2% offset), min350 (51)MPa (ksi)
Elongation in 2 in. (50.8 mm) or 4D, min40%

UNS N10675 is held to the identical tensile and yield minimums, so strength is not what separates the two B-family grades: Alloy B3 seamless tubes differ in composition and in how they come through fabrication heat. On thin-wall work it is the 40% elongation minimum that earns attention, because the wall has to be expanded into a tubesheet during assembly.

Equivalent Designations of Alloy B2

Alloy B2 appears under more than one designation, depending on where the drawing was raised. Only the UNS designation comes from the product specification itself. The European and German material numbers below are cross-references, and listing them implies nothing about conformity to any European standard.

  1. Commercial name (USA)Alloy B2, also written Alloy B-2
  2. USA (UNS)UNS N10665
  3. Europe (EN / W.Nr)W.Nr. 2.4617
  4. Germany (DIN)DIN 2.4617

A line item written 2.4617 and a line item written N10665 are quoted off the same heats, so send the drawing as it stands rather than converting the number first.

Nondestructive Electric Testing of Seamless Alloy B2 Tube

Nothing ships untested. ASTM B622 offers the mill a choice of two, a hydrostatic test and a nondestructive electric test, and whichever is used reaches every single piece rather than a sample drawn from the lot. They are alternatives, never a pair. Where the purchaser specifies it, the nondestructive electric test takes the place of the hydrostatic test on seamless tube, and every seamless Alloy B2 tube then has to pass that examination before release. State the choice on the purchase order and it is written into the works order.

Ultrasonic and Eddy-Current Examination of Seamless B2 Tubes

Two methods sit behind the electric test. Ultrasonic examination is carried out to Practice E213. Eddy-current examination is carried out to Practice E426 or Practice E571. Either one satisfies the requirement, which is why a specification that names a method is worth quoting on the inquiry rather than leaving the selection open.

Calibration Standards for a Seamless N10665 Tube Examination

An examination is only as good as the reference the equipment is set against. For eddy-current work that reference is either a radial drill hole no larger than 0.79 mm (0.031 in.) in diameter, drilled right through the wall, or a transverse tangential notch filed with a 6 mm (1/4 in.) round tool to a depth no greater than 12.5% of the specified wall or 0.10 mm (0.004 in.), whichever is the greater. Ultrasonic work uses longitudinal notches cut into the outside and inside surfaces, held to that same depth limit.

Seamless 2.4617 Tube Sizes and Tolerances

Every seamless 2.4617 tube is drawn between 6 and 457 mm outside diameter, at walls of 1 to 65 mm, in lengths of up to 22 m, or cut to whatever dimension an order gives. Wall is ordered on one of two bases, nominal wall or minimum wall, and the allowance that applies follows from that choice. Each end is left plain, cut and deburred.

Cold-Worked Diameter and Wall Limits on a Seamless B-2 Tube

Diameter and wall on an ASME SB-622 B2 seamless tube are verified against the ASTM B622 cold-worked tolerances. Bands below run from instrument sizes upward and cover every diameter drawn in this grade.

Outside diameter (mm)Diameter tolerance (mm)On nominal wallOn minimum wall

above 356 to 610+3.18 / -0.79+15% / -12.5%+30% / 0

Two readings matter once the wall gets thin. Where the wall is 3% of the diameter or less, the table figure applies to the mean diameter rather than to any one reading, and a single reading with ovality included may run 0.5% of the nominal diameter outside it. Over 114 mm diameter with a wall thicker than 3% of the diameter, the mean again has to sit inside the table while an individual reading is allowed to double it.

Choosing Between Nominal and Minimum Wall on a Seamless Tube Order

Order to nominal wall and the delivered wall may sit either side of the figure by the percentage in the table. Order to minimum wall and nothing is permitted below it, the whole allowance moving to the plus side. Pick minimum wall where a wall calculation has no room for under-tolerance; nominal wall is the other basis the specification offers, and the quotation states which one an item is priced on.

Industrial Applications of Alloy B-2 Seamless Tube

The duty behind this grade is acid that stays reducing throughout, and an Alloy B-2 seamless tube earns its place where no oxidizing side stream reaches the metal.

Industrial Heat Exchangers duty for Alloy B2 seamless tube

Industrial Heat Exchangers

Heat transfer units are the leading tube-side use for this grade, taking the duty where a reducing acid stream is heated or cooled and a drawn bore matters as much as the analysis does.

Hydrogen Chloride Absorption and Recovery duty for Alloy B2 seamless tube

Hydrogen Chloride Absorption and Recovery

Absorption column tube and the runs that carry hydrogen chloride gas and recovered acid use this alloy, which holds up across the full acid concentration range rather than over a narrow window of it.

Sulfuric Acid Concentration and Recovery duty for Alloy B2 seamless tube

Sulfuric Acid Concentration and Recovery

Sulfuric acid kept inside its non-oxidizing range is concentrated and recovered through tube in this grade, and exchanger tube inside those units is one of the services the composition is matched to.

Alkylation and Hydrocarbon Reaction Equipment duty for Alloy B2 seamless tube

Alkylation and Hydrocarbon Reaction Equipment

Reactors and columns running hydrocarbon reactions such as the alkylation of ethylbenzene take tube in this alloy for internals and for the acid-bearing connections feeding them.

Organic Acid Evaporators and Columns duty for Alloy B2 seamless tube

Organic Acid Evaporators and Columns

Acetic and formic acid service, with the evaporator and column tube that goes with it, matches the analysis provided the stream reaching the metal has no oxidizing component in it.

Refinery Process Units duty for Alloy B2 seamless tube

Refinery Process Units

Vacuum distillation and the other refining stages where a stream turns reducing take tube in this grade, together with the acid wash connections sitting alongside them.

Price per kg of Seamless Alloy 2.4617 Tube

Treat USD 28 to 65 per kg as an indicative budget figure for a seamless alloy 2.4617 tube to ASTM B622, not as an offer against any size. The width of the band comes from the alloy content: with molybdenum at 26.0 to 30.0% and nickel taking the remainder, a shift in the molybdenum market moves this grade further than an equivalent shift in nickel. Small-bore thin-wall bundles in short quantities price near the top, larger diameters in project quantities near the bottom. Give us the bundle list with the certificate level and a dated offer replaces the range.

ASME SB-622 B2 Seamless Tube FAQ

When is a nondestructive electric test used instead of the pressure test?

When you ask for it. ASTM B622 lets a nondestructive electric test stand in place of the hydrostatic test on seamless tube where the purchaser specifies it, so write the requirement into the purchase order. One route or the other reaches every piece in any case, and never both as standard.

Can I ask for ultrasonic examination rather than eddy current?

Yes. Ultrasonic examination to Practice E213 and eddy-current examination to Practice E426 or E571 each satisfy the requirement, so state the one your specification calls for. Leave it open and the method is the mill's to select, which suits most orders but not a procedure that names a method.

How often is the examination equipment recalibrated during a run?

At four points. Before a production run or lot begins, at least once every four hours while testing continues, at the end of that run or lot, and after any suspected equipment malfunction or work stoppage. No tube's result therefore rests on a setting more than four hours old.

Which calibration depth limit governs on a thin wall?

The greater of the two, and across the walls we draw that is the percentage. At the 1 mm minimum wall, 12.5% comes to 0.125 mm, which already exceeds the 0.10 mm (0.004 in.) floor, so the floor only ever governs on wall thinner than we supply and the depth limit rises with the wall from there.

Does the 40% elongation minimum cover expansion into a tubesheet?

ASTM B622 sets elongation at 40% minimum in 2 in. (50.8 mm) or 4D for UNS N10665 at room temperature, and that is the ductility figure to hand your fabricator. The specification fixes a material minimum rather than a forming limit, so confirm the expansion against the tube-expanding procedure in use.

Are lengths up to 22 m available for an exchanger bundle?

Yes. Tube in this grade runs to 22 m at the longest, which covers a shell length without a joint part way along the bundle, and shorter lengths are cut to the dimension on your order. Diameters cover 6 to 457 mm, with walls of 1 to 65 mm across that span.

How is small-diameter tube marked?

Tube of 3/4 in. (19.0 mm) diameter and above that runs longer than 3 ft (914 mm) carries the marking on the tube itself. Below either threshold the same information goes on each piece, or on a tag attached to the bundle, which is the usual case at instrument sizes.

In what condition does the tube leave the mill?

Solution annealed and descaled. ASTM B622 states that as a condition and not as a temperature, and where the annealing is done under atmosphere control a separate descaling step is not needed. Pickling is available on request, and the delivery condition appears on the lot certificate.
