Stainless Steel 317 Seamless Tubes Manufacturer in Thailand

ASTM A213 covers seamless boiler, superheater and heat-exchanger tubes, with ASME SA-213 as its counterpart wherever a boiler or pressure vessel code governs the order, and TP317 is one of the austenitic grades listed in it. Austenitic tube leaves the mill heat treated, either solution treated as a separate operation or quenched directly after hot forming while still above the solution temperature. Diameters beyond the range the specification describes as usual are produced to it just the same, once every other requirement is met. Lines sized by NPS and schedule instead belong with our stainless steel 317 seamless pipes.

Every ASTM A213 TP317 stainless steel seamless tube is proved individually, under hydrostatic pressure or by nondestructive electric examination, and the method is ours to pick while the order leaves it open. Per heat, A213 makes a product analysis compulsory; per lot it adds a tension test on one tube up to 50 tubes and on two above that, hardness readings from two tubes, and flattening and flaring tests. Hardness applies from a 1.65 mm wall upward, and thinner tube is judged on the other tests. Results are issued on an EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) certificate, alongside the raw material certificate, 100% PMI data, heat treatment charts and the size and surface roughness report; an independent laboratory test certificate and attendance by a third-party inspector are available on request. An intergranular corrosion test to ASTM A262 Practice E runs when the order names it.

Chemical Composition of UNS S31700 Seamless Tube

Molybdenum of 3.0 to 4.0% sits with 18.0 to 20.0% chromium and 11.0 to 15.0% nickel in grade 317, and carbon has a 0.08% ceiling. Each heat is analyzed against the table below; elements without a row, nitrogen among them, carry no A213 requirement for this grade.

  • CrChromium, 18.0 to 20.0
  • NiNickel, 11.0 to 15.0
  • MoMolybdenum, 3.0 to 4.0
  • MnManganese, 2.00 max
  • SiSilicon, 1.00 max

Strength and Hardness of 317 Stainless Steel Seamless Tube

A213 gives TP317 a single set of figures, with no split by wall, so one column governs the whole of our wall range. Strength entries are minimums and the hardness entries are ceilings.

RequirementTP317
Tensile strength, minimum515 MPa (75 ksi)
Yield strength, minimum205 MPa (30 ksi)
Elongation in 50 mm (2 in.), minimum34%
Brinell or Vickers hardness, maximum192 HBW / 200 HV
Rockwell B hardness, maximum90 HRB

Elongation of 34% is the figure the A213 tensile table prints for TP317, and lot tension results are judged against it. Hardness may be read in Brinell, Vickers or Rockwell, the method following the wall of the tube in hand.

Grade 317 Equivalent Designations

Drawings from different standards bodies name grade 317 as follows.

  1. UNSS31700
  2. ASTM A213 / ASME SA-213 tube gradeTP317
  3. European number (WNR)1.4449
  4. Japan (JIS)SUS317
  5. China (GB)06Cr19Ni13Mo3; ISC S31708

Each entry works only as a cross-reference to UNS S31700: a requisition written around seamless WNR 1.4449 tube or SUS317 is quoted and supplied as ASTM A213 TP317.

Seamless WNR 1.4449 Tube Sizes and Dimensional Limits

Grade 317 runs from 6.35 mm to 257 mm in outside diameter and from 0.89 mm to 12.7 mm in wall, in straight lengths reaching 22 m. The large-diameter end of that range is where the cold-finished limits need stating, so those two bands come first.

Outside Diameter Limits on Large Cold-Finished Seamless Tube

Specified OD BandPlus, mmMinus, mm
Above 100 up to 200 incl. (above 4 up to 7-1/2 in. incl.)0.380.64
Above 200 up to 225 incl. (above 7-1/2 up to 9 in. incl.)0.381.14

The diameter variations our A213 seamless tubing is held to are tabulated only as far as 225 mm. For diameters above that figure, up to the 257 mm top of the range, the diameter limit is agreed on the order and written into our quotation. Each band already allows for out-of-roundness and holds for tube as delivered, ahead of any expanding, swaging, bending or polishing.

Flattening and Flaring Checks on Each Lot

Both checks are sampled per lot, on specimens taken from each end of one finished tube, and the tube that supplies the flattening specimens is never the tube that supplies the flaring ones. Flattening is carried out in two steps. Flaring expands the inside diameter with a tool of 60 degree included angle, which is the evidence that a tube fitted into a boiler or a tubesheet will stand expanding and beading without cracks or flaws.

Where SS 317 Seamless Tube Sits Between 316 and 317L

Grade 317 lifts molybdenum to 3.0 to 4.0% from the 2.00 to 3.00% of TP316, chromium to 18.0 to 20.0% from 16.0 to 18.0% and nickel to 11.0 to 15.0% from 10.0 to 14.0%. The two grades share their A213 tensile and yield minimums, so the gain lies in corrosion resistance; 316 seamless tubes remain the leaner choice for bundles that come out of service without chloride pitting.

Carbon is what divides 317 from its low-carbon partner, at 0.08% against 0.035%. For bundles that enter service in the as-welded condition, 317L seamless tubes hold back chromium carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone, while TP317 suits bundles rolled into a tubesheet and the heavier walls where the carbon ceiling costs nothing.

Industrial Applications of Seamless Stainless Steel 317 Tube

Grade 317 seamless tube goes where chlorides, organic acids and sour gas pass across the tube wall.

Flue Gas Desulfurization Systems duty for Stainless Steel 317 seamless tube

Flue Gas Desulfurization Systems

Scrubber heat exchangers in desulfurization plant handle acid chloride condensate, the duty that takes a bundle past 316, and tube for them is cut to the bundle length with both ends deburred.

Pulp and Paper Bleaching duty for Stainless Steel 317 seamless tube

Pulp and Paper Bleaching

Bleaching equipment and digester heaters in pulp mills run on the grade, where bleach liquor carries chloride at low pH. Tube arrives solution treated and straight, ready for rolling into the tubesheet.

Power Plant Condensers and Superheaters duty for Stainless Steel 317 seamless tube

Power Plant Condensers and Superheaters

Power stations run 317 seamless tube in condenser bundles and superheater circuits, and A213 holds a superheater tube to the forging, welding and bending that fitting it involves.

Chemical and Petrochemical Exchangers duty for Stainless Steel 317 seamless tube

Chemical and Petrochemical Exchangers

Process exchangers, reboilers and coolers in chemical and petrochemical plants handle organic acid streams on this grade, ordered by OD and minimum wall so the design thickness is never undercut.

Marine and Seawater Cooling duty for Stainless Steel 317 seamless tube

Marine and Seawater Cooling

Marine cooling systems and seawater-side coolers take the grade for its molybdenum level, in cold-finished tube whose closer diameter limits ease the fit of tube-to-tubesheet joints.

Sour Gas Gathering and Treating duty for Stainless Steel 317 seamless tube

Sour Gas Gathering and Treating

Gas gathering and treating units place the grade in exchanger and cooler tubes on sour streams, with the finishing condition and the wall basis recorded for each heat and lot.

Seamless S31700 Stainless Steel Tube Price per kg

A seamless S31700 stainless steel tube carries an indicative price of USD 5 to 9 per kg. With 3.0 to 4.0% molybdenum in the analysis, the figure follows molybdenum as closely as nickel, and because grade 317 is drawn in smaller volumes than the 316 grades, lot size and mill availability weigh on it too. Thin walls, a bright annealed surface and added corrosion testing push a size toward the top of the band. The firm figure comes back with the offer against your size list.

Questions About Stainless Steel 317 Seamless Tubes

How does grade 317 seamless tube compare with 316 in a chloride-bearing bundle?

It carries more molybdenum. A213 sets 3.0 to 4.0% for TP317 against 2.00 to 3.00% for TP316, with chromium and nickel a step higher as well. Both grades share the same tensile and yield minimums, so the upgrade buys corrosion resistance rather than strength. Send the media, concentration and temperature for confirmation.

Why does the certificate for a seamless 1.4449 stainless steel tube show 34% elongation?

Because 34% is the elongation minimum printed for TP317 in the A213 tensile table, measured on a 50 mm (2 in.) gauge length. Molybdenum grades alongside it in that table carry figures of their own. Every lot tension result for this grade is reported against the TP317 row.

Should an exchanger built with field welds be ordered in TP317 or TP317L?

TP317L in most cases. Its carbon ceiling of 0.035% against 0.08% for TP317 limits chromium carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone, so a joint keeps its corrosion resistance as welded. TP317 suits bundles rolled and expanded into the tubesheet. Name the fabrication route on the inquiry.

What is the largest diameter an outside-diameter limit is published for?

225 mm. Cold-finished tube over 100 up to 200 mm is held to 0.38 mm over and 0.64 mm under, and over 200 up to 225 mm to 0.38 mm over and 1.14 mm under. From 225 mm to the 257 mm top of our range, the limit is agreed on the order and stated in the quotation.

How are the flattening and flaring tests sampled on a 317 stainless steel seamless tube lot?

One finished tube of the lot supplies the flattening specimens and a second supplies the flaring specimens, each pair cut from both ends of its own tube. The flaring tool has a 60 degree included angle and expands the inside diameter, proving the tube will take expansion at a tubesheet.

Can the hydrostatic test be specified instead of the electric test on each tube?

Yes, by naming it on the order. A213 requires one of the two on every tube and leaves the choice to the mill while the order stays silent, so write hydrostatic testing against the line when a code or end user asks for it. Eddy current or ultrasonic examination is the alternative.

At what temperature is UNS S31700 seamless tube solution treated?

At 1040 °C (1900 °F) as a minimum, followed by a water quench or another route rapid enough to stop carbides re-precipitating. A213 fixes only that floor. Tube is then pickled free of scale, a step bright annealed lengths skip because the anneal leaves the surface clean.

What does the EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) certificate carry for grade 317?

The heat analysis against the A213 TP317 limits, the lot tension and hardness results, the flattening and flaring outcomes and the hydrostatic or electric test record for the tubes in the lot. Heat treatment charts, PMI data and the dimensional report travel with it, and an A262 Practice E result is added when ordered.
