ASTM B622 Hastelloy seamless tubes at the THAIDA mill in Chonburi, Thailand

One product standard sits behind the whole range: ASTM B622, Standard Specification for Seamless Nickel and Nickel-Cobalt Alloy Pipe and Tube, with ASME SB-622 as the reference used on code work. The specification names each alloy by its UNS number only and prints no grade name beside it, so Alloy C22 and Alloy B3 are commercial labels, not ASTM designations. Clause 5.1.2.1 fixes how a tube is ordered, while ASTM B829 supplies the manufacturing requirements, permitted dimensional variations, lot rules, length tolerances and marking that B622 adopts. A requirement written in nominal sizes and schedules is quoted as Hastelloy seamless pipes instead.

Two tests represent the lot and one proves the piece. Chemistry is analyzed once for each lot and one tension test is pulled from it, a lot being material of one heat, one size and one condition, and a failed tension specimen is answered by two further specimens that must both pass. Each ASTM B622 seamless nickel alloy tube is then proved singly, either by a hydrostatic test or by nondestructive electric examination. Those figures reach you on the EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) certificate, which travels with raw material certificates, a positive material identification record per tube, the heat treatment charts, and records of the size and surface checks.

Ordering Seamless Nickel Alloy Tube by Outside Diameter and Wall

Three figures finish a tube line under ASTM B622: the outside diameter, the wall thickness as a minimum or an average, and the length. Nothing else is needed, and nothing else is read, which is why a tube drawing can specify a finished diameter that answers to no nominal size at all. Pipe is handled the other way round, by nominal size with a schedule setting the wall, and the two bases meet different design habits rather than different mills: the same benches draw both.

The wall basis is the choice that matters most on a bundle. Ordered to minimum wall, the whole permitted variation is added above the figure stated, so the thinnest point of the finished tube is still the wall the calculation used. Ordered to average wall, that variation falls on both sides of the number, which suits a datasheet written to a nominal thickness. Grade does not shift the envelope either: seamless WNR 2.4819 tube and seamless WNR 2.4617 tube are drawn over the same diameters and walls.

The Five Grades Supplied as Hastelloy Seamless Tubes

Chromium is the dividing line in this family. Alloy C276, Alloy C22 and Alloy C4 hold enough of it to work in oxidizing and mixed-acid streams, while the two B grades, Alloy B2 and Alloy B3, carry almost none of it and take the reducing acids instead. Each grade page below sets out the chemistry, the strength minimums, the tolerance bands and the test detail for that one alloy.

Alloy C276 seamless tubes, UNS N10276, at the THAIDA mill in Chonburi
UNS N10276 · W.Nr. 2.4819

Alloy C276 Seamless Tube

Alloy C276 anchors the C group, a nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy whose tungsten addition helps it hold wet chlorine, hypochlorite and ferric and cupric chloride streams. Harsh chemical processing and waste treatment bundles are where it sits. Tolerances, chemistry and finishes for UNS N10276 seamless tube are on the Alloy C276 seamless tubes page.

Alloy C22 seamless tubes, UNS N06022, at the THAIDA mill in Chonburi
UNS N06022 · W.Nr. 2.4602

Alloy C22 Seamless Tube

Chromium above the level in the reference grade is what sets Alloy C22 apart, which is why it goes into nitration service, chlorine dioxide circuits and chromic acid streams where the duty swings between oxidizing and reducing. Sizes and chemistry for seamless WNR 2.4602 tube are on Alloy C22 seamless tubes.

Alloy C4 seamless tubes, UNS N06455, at the THAIDA mill in Chonburi
UNS N06455 · W.Nr. 2.4610

Alloy C4 Seamless Tube

Alloy C4 keeps its structure through long hot exposure and resists grain-boundary precipitation, which suits a bundle that goes into service as welded or sits hot for weeks together. Condenser, reboiler and evaporator tube is its usual home. See Alloy C4 seamless tubes for sizes and grade data.

Alloy B2 seamless tubes, UNS N10665, at the THAIDA mill in Chonburi
UNS N10665 · W.Nr. 2.4617

Alloy B2 Seamless Tube

With effectively no chromium in it, Alloy B2 is a nickel-molybdenum alloy for pure reducing acids: hydrochloric at any concentration, and sulfuric, hydrofluoric, acetic and phosphoric besides. Heat transfer units on those duties are typical. Ordering detail for UNS N10665 seamless tube and seamless 2.4617 tube is on Alloy B2 seamless tubes.

Alloy B3 seamless tubes, UNS N10675, at the THAIDA mill in Chonburi
UNS N10675 · W.Nr. 2.4600

Alloy B3 Seamless Tube

Alloy B3 gives the same reducing acid resistance as Alloy B2 with better structural stability through heating and cooling, so a cycled or frequently restarted bundle is its case. Reboiler and overhead condenser tube is where it lands most often. Grade data is on Alloy B3 seamless tubes.

ASME SB-622 Seamless Tube Sizes and Length Allowance

Diameters open at 6 mm and reach 457 mm, walls run from 1 mm to 65 mm, and a tube can be cut as long as 22 m, which is what lets a single piece run the whole length of a long exchanger shell.

The cut-length allowance is keyed on diameter rather than on grade, so a UNS N10665 seamless tube and a C276 tube of the same size are held to the same figures: up to 7.3 m, plus 3.2 mm and nothing under below 50.8 mm outside diameter, and plus 4.8 mm from 50.8 mm upward. Beyond 7.3 m the over-tolerance grows by a further 3.2 mm with every additional 3 m or fraction, up to 12.7 mm in all. Diameter and wall limits are taken from the cold-worked bands that ASTM B829 sets out, and the applicable band is named on the quotation.

Delivery Condition and Finish of ASTM B622 Seamless Tube

A solid billet is hot extruded or rotary pierced into a hollow shell. Cold drawing or cold pilgering then brings it down to the ordered diameter and wall, and that is the step giving the bore its smooth surface and holding the diameter steady along the length.

Every seamless 2.4602 tube and every B grade tube next goes through solution annealing, and B622 calls for delivery in the solution annealed and descaled condition, adding that descaling becomes unnecessary once the annealing atmosphere is controlled. Pickling, straightening, cutting and testing close the sequence, and each tube leaves with plain ends, cut and deburred. Walls are quoted in millimeters against the diameter table, and a requirement written in inches is converted and confirmed on the quotation.

Where ASTM B622 Seamless Nickel Alloy Tube Is Used

Heat transfer is the center of gravity for this family, where a thin wall and an accurate bore do the work. The seven duties below cover most of the bundle and small-bore work we quote.

Heat exchanger and condenser duty for Hastelloy seamless tube

Heat Exchangers and Condensers

Shell-and-tube exchangers, condensers, reboilers and evaporators on acid and chloride duty are the core work for this family, and seamless WNR 2.4819 tube is what most bundles are built from.

Chemical and petrochemical processing duty for Hastelloy seamless tube

Chemical and Petrochemical Processing

Chlorination systems, acid scrubbers, reactor and vessel internals, catalyst regeneration circuits and solvent recovery tubing put mixed acids through the bore, duty that seamless 2.4819 tube and the other C grades carry.

Acid concentration and recovery duty for Hastelloy seamless tube

Acid Concentration and Recovery

Hydrochloric and sulfuric acid concentration, recovery and reboiler circuits run strongly reducing media, which is the case for seamless 2.4617 tube and for the B3 grade alongside it.

Pulp and paper bleaching duty for Hastelloy seamless tube

Pulp and Paper Bleaching

Bleaching stages running chlorine dioxide, hypochlorite and wet chlorine gas, together with digester components and acid transfer tubing, are held by seamless 2.4602 tube and by the C4 grade.

Pharmaceutical production duty for Hastelloy seamless tube

Pharmaceutical Production

Active pharmaceutical ingredient synthesis, high-purity dosing circuits and solvent recovery tubing ask for a bore that will not contaminate the product through corrosion, and UNS N06022 seamless tube is the usual answer.

Marine and pollution-control duty for Hastelloy seamless tube

Marine and Pollution Control

Shipboard exhaust and incineration circuits, flue gas desulfurization scrubber tubing, wastewater treatment and chlorination plant sit in chloride-laden service, and UNS N10276 seamless tube is the grade usually written against them.

Small-bore and sensor protection tubing duty for Hastelloy seamless tube

Small-Bore and Sensor Protection Tubing

Sensor protection tubes and exhaust-component test pieces in automotive work are drawn at the small end of the range, from 6 mm outside diameter upward, and seamless WNR 2.4602 tube covers that duty.

Shipping and Packaging of Hastelloy Seamless Tubes

Hastelloy Seamless Tubes FAQ

What does a tube line on an inquiry have to state?

Three figures: outside diameter, the wall with its basis, and the length. B622 clause 5.1.2.1 sets that out for tube, which is why no nominal size or schedule appears on a tube line. Add the grade and the tube count per item and the inquiry is complete.

Minimum wall or average wall: which basis belongs on the order?

Minimum wall suits a line whose calculated thickness is a floor: every permitted variation is added on top, so the thinnest point still meets the figure you gave. Average wall suits a nominal thickness that may run either side of the number. Say which you mean on each line, because the two quote differently.

How far over the ordered figure can a cut length run?

Never under the ordered figure, and the over-allowance is keyed on diameter, with a wider band once a length passes 7.3 m and a ceiling beyond which it stops growing. The exact figures for your diameter appear on the quotation, alongside the band that applies to the cut lengths you ask for.

Which grades are drawn as seamless Hastelloy tube?

Five: Alloy C276, Alloy C22 and Alloy C4 in the chromium-bearing C group, and Alloy B2 and Alloy B3 in the nickel-molybdenum B group. A drawing may call any of them out by number instead, so seamless WNR 2.4617 tube and seamless 2.4819 tube quote without a query.

In what form and with which ends does the tube ship?

Round, in straight lengths, with plain ends cut and deburred, which is what B622 provides for. ASTM B829 also requires delivered material to be straight enough to handle, with no bends or kinks. Walls are stated in millimeters rather than as a gauge number, and every tube is straightened, cut to length and capped before packing.

Does the bore arrive ready for an exchanger bundle?

Yes. Each tube is solution annealed and then descaled, and B622 treats descaling as unnecessary when the annealing atmosphere is controlled. Cold drawing or pilgering leaves the internal surface smooth and the diameter consistent, and both ends are capped before packing.

Which documents travel with a tube consignment?

The EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) certificate, raw material certificates, a positive material identification record per tube, the annealing charts and the size and surface measurement records. A third-party inspection report and an independent laboratory report are added when the order asks for them.

How is an individual tube tied back to the lot that was tested?

By the heat number marked on it. Chemistry and tensile results represent the lot, meaning one heat at one size and condition, so the mark on a UNS N06022 seamless tube points to the right row on the certificate. The pressure or electric test result belongs to that tube alone.
