ASTM B165 / ASME SB-165 / EN 10204 3.1
Thaida Stainless Steel Manufacturing (Thailand) Co., Ltd. produces Monel seamless pipes in two grades, Monel 400 and Monel K500, at its mill in Ban Bueng, Chonburi, Thailand, and handles quotations and certificates from its office in Bang Phli, Samut Prakan. Both grades are nickel-copper alloys. Monel 400 appears on line lists as UNS N04400 seamless pipe and on European drawings as seamless WNR 2.4360 pipe, while the age-hardenable Monel K500 is identified as UNS N05500, W.Nr. 2.4375.

The two grades share one size envelope, one ordering basis and one certificate format. They differ in how the product is defined: Monel 400 follows a published ASTM pipe standard, while Monel K500 is made to the terms written on the purchase order.
ASTM B165, Standard Specification for Nickel-Copper Alloy Seamless Pipe and Tube, covers a single alloy, UNS N04400, as cold-worked seamless pipe and tube, and ASME SB-165 is its counterpart for ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code work. An ASTM B165 seamless Monel pipe on a line list is therefore always a Monel 400 item. The standard identifies the alloy by its UNS number rather than by a commercial name, and that number is the one entered on our certificate.
ASTM B829, Standard Specification for General Requirements for Nickel and Nickel Alloys Seamless Pipe and Tube, lists B165 among the product specifications whose general requirements it sets, and B165 refers to it for the nondestructive electric test method. B165 keeps its own clauses for chemistry, tensile properties, dimensional tolerances, lot definition, marking and certification, and where the two documents differ, the product standard governs.
Monel K500 has no dedicated ASTM seamless pipe standard, and B165 covers UNS N04400 only. Each UNS N05500 seamless pipe item is therefore supplied to the purchase order, and our certificate reports the pipe against the terms written there.
Monel 400 and Monel K500 share a nickel-copper base and similar corrosion resistance. The aluminum and titanium in K500 are what separate them, because those additions allow age hardening. Each seamless Monel alloy pipe grade has its own page with composition, delivery conditions and sizes.
Monel 400 is the solid-solution grade, hardened only by cold work, and the only Monel grade with an ASTM pipe standard. B165 lists it annealed or stress-relieved, and it resists hydrofluoric acid, alkalis and rapidly flowing seawater. Monel K500 adds aluminum and titanium to the Monel 400 base, so it can be age-hardened. It is usually delivered solution-treated and age-hardened (precipitation-hardened), which makes it considerably stronger than Monel 400 while keeping similar corrosion resistance. Pipe is ordered by nominal pipe size and schedule, the basis ASTM B165 sets for pipe, and each item is cut to length or supplied in random lengths. B165 adds a nonmandatory schedule table, published for information only, listing the schedules it regards as regularly available; other schedules can be furnished after consultation. Permitted variations for Monel 400 come from B165's own table for cold-worked pipe and tube, within the sizes that table lists, and its ends are plain cut and deburred, as B165 requires. A seamless 2.4375 pipe item has no standard table to fall back on, so its tolerances are agreed on the order. Both grades of seamless nickel-copper alloy pipe are made within the envelope given in the specification table. Items dimensioned by outside diameter and wall rather than by schedule usually belong with our Monel seamless tubes.
Monel seamless pipes carry seawater, brine, hydrofluoric acid, alkalis and sour hydrocarbons. Each sector below names the grade it usually takes.
Seawater cooling systems and offshore platform piping run in Monel 400, which resists rapidly flowing seawater and brackish water. Subsea lines that also need higher strength are specified in seamless 2.4375 pipe.
Hydrofluoric acid alkylation units, chlorinated solvent equipment and acid production plants route their process and transfer lines through seamless 2.4360 pipe, chosen for its resistance to hydrofluoric acid and alkalis.
Sour gas, crude distillation and underwater lines use both grades: Monel 400 for crude column transfer lines, and seamless WNR 2.4375 pipe for its higher strength in sour-well lines and separators exposed to hydrogen sulfide.
Brine heaters, evaporator chambers and reverse osmosis systems in desalination plants handle concentrated saline water, and their connecting lines are built from seamless WNR 2.4360 pipe for that duty.
Power plants specify seamless 2.4360 pipe for feedwater heater and steam generator systems, and for the condenser circuits that bring seawater or brackish water into the plant.
Shell-and-tube heat exchangers and marine condensers use Monel 400 where corrosion comes from both sides, process fluid inside and cooling water outside, and the connecting piping is ordered by pipe size and schedule.

A line list that mixes both grades of Monel seamless pipes receives one offer, with the standard or order basis named against each line.
Only Monel 400. ASTM B165 / ASME SB-165 covers UNS N04400, so a line specification quoting either number is met with Monel 400. For seamless WNR 2.4375 pipe, the Monel K500 grade, the purchase order acts as the specification: write UNS N05500, the delivery condition, the tolerances and the test plan, and the certificate reports the pipe against them.
For an ASTM B165 seamless Monel pipe, follow the standard's ordering list: UNS N04400 seamless pipe, ASTM designation and year of issue, condition, finish, nominal pipe size and schedule, cut or random length, and quantity in feet or pieces. Name the test type if you need a specific one, plus any witness inspection. Monel K500 lines add tolerances and tests.
Either a hydrostatic test or a nondestructive electric test by eddy current or ultrasonic, at the manufacturer's choice unless the order names one. Any length that leaks under hydrostatic pressure is rejected. Chemical analysis and the tension test are made once per lot rather than per length. Monel K500 lengths receive the tests listed on the order.
Start from strength. Monel 400, annealed or stress-relieved, is the choice when its strength minimums meet the design, and it brings ASTM B165 with it. Choose UNS N05500 seamless pipe when the design needs the higher strength of the age-hardened condition, as in sour-well or subsea service, and the project accepts a material defined by the purchase order.
Yes, ASTM B165 lists both conditions. Annealed material is soft, with a dull matte finish and the higher elongation. Stress-relieved material is thermally treated below the annealing temperature to relieve most internal stresses, and carries higher tensile and yield minimums with a thin light- to medium-dark surface. Name the condition on the order, because the minimums follow it.
Each shipment carries an EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) certificate giving heat number, UNS number, condition and test results. For Monel 400, B165 makes a manufacturer's certification and a test report mandatory on every order, and our certificate covers both. Raw material certificates, heat treatment charts and size records can accompany it; third-party inspection is available on request.
Both grades are made with outside diameters up to 457 mm, walls up to 65 mm and lengths up to 18 m. Lengths are supplied cut to an ordered dimension or random. For Monel 400 cut lengths, the B165 length tolerance is plus only, so a piece may run slightly over the ordered length but never under it.
