Ethylene Cracker Coils
Steam crackers build radiant and convection-section coils from seamless nickel alloy N08120 pipe for its carburization resistance, with each length beveled for the butt welds that join the coils to their headers.
ASTM B407 / ASME SB-407 / UNS N08120 / W.Nr. 2.4854
Thaida Stainless Steel Manufacturing (Thailand) Co., Ltd., with its factory in Ban Bueng, Chonburi and its office in Bang Phli, Samut Prakan, produces Nickel Alloy UNS N08120 Seamless Pipes to ASTM B407 / ASME SB-407 for creep and rupture duty. UNS N08120 is a nickel-iron-chromium alloy, cross-referenced in Europe as W.Nr. 2.4854, and every length is annealed to the controlled grain size its standard requires. It is one of three iron-bearing nickel alloys in our nickel alloy seamless pipes range.

The table fixes what each order of UNS N08120 seamless pipe is held to: our mill's size window, the delivery condition, the two process controls ASTM B407 sets for this grade, the ordering basis and the tests behind the certificate.
ASTM B407, Standard Specification for Nickel-Iron-Chromium Alloy Seamless Pipe and Tube, covers UNS N08120 as cold-worked and hot-finished annealed seamless pipe and tube, and ASME SB-407 is the related specification for Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code applications. UNS N08120 is the designation marked on ASTM B407 UNS N08120 seamless pipe and stated on its certificate. Pipe is ordered by standard pipe size and schedule, whereas Nickel Alloy UNS N08120 seamless tubes under the same standard are specified in two dimensions, such as outside diameter and wall.
Each lot receives one chemical analysis, one tension test and one grain-size test, and every length is hydrostatically or electrically tested before release. Results reach you on an EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) material test certificate that carries the heat number and UNS N08120, and third-party inspection is available on request.
Each heat of seamless WNR 2.4854 pipe is analyzed against the ASTM B407 limits below, once per lot. Iron makes up the remainder, and every value printed without a range is a maximum.

Two process controls in ASTM B407 are fixed for this grade. The final heat treatment must reach 2150 °F (1177 °C) minimum, and the annealed pipe must show an average grain size of ASTM No. 5 or coarser, confirmed by one grain-size test per lot. ASTM B407 applies both controls to each of its annealed conditions, and each lot's grain-size result for seamless N08120 pipe is reported on the certificate.
ASTM B407 also covers Incoloy 800HT seamless pipe, which carries the same grain-size rule with its own chemistry and its own heat-treatment minimum, so the UNS number on your line class decides which set of limits applies.
Tension results are taken once per lot and must meet these minimums for ASME SB-407 UNS N08120 seamless pipe.
| Condition | Tensile Strength, min, MPa (psi) | Yield Strength (0.2% offset), min, MPa (psi) | Elongation, min, % |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hot-finished annealed or cold-worked annealed | 621 (90 000) | 276 (40 000) | 30 |

Nickel Alloy UNS N08120 is identified by its UNS number in ASTM B407 and ASME SB-407, and by a Werkstoff number on European drawings.
A drawing that calls for seamless WNR 2.4854 pipe is entered under UNS N08120 when the order is booked, and the UNS number is the designation that governs on the certificate.
We make seamless 2.4854 alloy pipe from 6 mm to 457 mm OD with walls from 1 mm to 65 mm, in lengths up to 18 m, and confirm each size against our production plan at quotation.
Each line item names a standard pipe size and schedule. ASTM B407 Table X1.1, published for information only, lists Schedules 5, 10, 40 and 80 for NPS 1/4 to 6, though not every schedule at every size, and other schedules may be furnished on request.
For cold-finished pipe and tube from 12.7 to 168.3 mm OD, ASTM B407 sets these permitted variations:
| Specified OD, in. (mm) | OD Tolerance, in. (mm) | Wall Tolerance, % |
|---|---|---|
| 0.500 to 5/8 (12.7 to 15.8), excl. | ±0.005 (0.127) | ±15.0 |
| 5/8 to 1 1/2 (15.8 to 38.1), incl. | ±0.0075 (0.190) | ±10.0 |
| Over 1 1/2 to 3 1/2 (38.1 to 88.9), incl. | ±0.010 (0.254) | ±10.0 |
| Over 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 (88.9 to 114.3), incl. | ±0.015 (0.381) | ±10.0 |
| Over 4 1/2 to 6 (114.3 to 152.4), incl. | ±0.020 (0.508) | ±12.5 |
| Over 6 to 6 5/8 (152.4 to 168.3), incl. | ±0.025 (0.635) | ±12.5 |
The wall tolerance applies to the average wall, and eccentricity in any one cross section of cold-finished pipe stays within ±10% of the measured average wall of that section. Cut lengths are never short: cold-worked pipe may run 3.2 mm (1/8 in.) over the ordered length, or 6.4 mm (1/4 in.) over on lengths beyond 9.1 m (30 ft).
Among the three iron-bearing nickel alloys in our range, UNS N08120 is the grade for creep and rupture duty, while Nickel Alloy 20 seamless pipes serve sulfuric acid lines. Furnace, boiler and incineration plants use it as follows.

Steam crackers build radiant and convection-section coils from seamless nickel alloy N08120 pipe for its carburization resistance, with each length beveled for the butt welds that join the coils to their headers.

Refinery process heaters, reformers and syngas transfer lines run heater coils and piping in this alloy, ordered by NPS and schedule so each spool matches the heater builder's piping design.

Heat-treatment and direct-fired furnaces fit radiant lines cut from this pipe where oxidation resistance matters, with each length cut and end-finished to the furnace builder's drawing.

Power boilers carry superheater and reheater sections in UNS N08120 seamless pipe, with every length hydrostatically or electrically tested and its heat number traceable from the pipe marking to the certificate.

Waste incineration plants place the alloy in superheater circuits exposed to sulfidation and oxidation from the flue gas, with lengths cut to the spool list to keep site offcuts small.

Cement kiln preheater lines and combustion air preheaters take seamless 2.4854 alloy pipe in the schedule the plant's piping class names, supplied plain-ended or beveled for site welding.

Because the standard places UNS N08120 among the alloys used where creep and rupture resistance is required, and states that they are annealed to develop a controlled grain size for optimum properties in that duty. Every lot must therefore average ASTM No. 5 or coarser, and a lot that misses the limit cannot be certified to ASTM B407.
It is the lowest temperature allowed for the final heat treatment of UNS N08120 under ASTM B407, a mill process requirement rather than an operating limit for your line. ASTM B407 applies it to both of its annealed conditions, and our certificate states the condition supplied, cold-worked annealed.
No. ASME SB-407 UNS N08120 seamless pipe has one strength row for hot-finished annealed and cold-worked annealed material: 621 MPa (90 000 psi) tensile, 276 MPa (40 000 psi) yield at 0.2% offset and 30% elongation. Either condition is accepted against the same figures, checked by one tension test per lot.
Give the NPS, schedule, cut length, quantity and end preparation for each line, and name the material as ASTM B407 UNS N08120 seamless pipe. Our pipe is supplied cold-worked annealed, and the wall should be quoted in millimeters for any schedule outside those ASTM B407 lists.
Yes. Under ASTM B407, plain ends cut and deburred are furnished unless the order gives details for ends beveled for welding. State the bevel angle and root face on each line item, and we machine the ends before packing so the pipe reaches your fabrication shop ready for fit-up.
One of the two. ASTM B407 requires either a hydrostatic test or a nondestructive electric test on every length, chosen by the mill unless your purchase order names one, and the electric test may be eddy current or ultrasonic. Write the required test, and any test pressure other than the standard one, on the purchase order.
An EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) material test certificate with the heat analysis against each ASTM B407 limit, the tension and grain-size results, the condition and each length's test record. ASTM B407 asks the order to state whether certification is required, and we issue it as standard. Intergranular corrosion or PMI checks, when ordered, are added to it.
Carbon (0.02%), niobium (0.4%) and nitrogen (0.15%) have minimums as well as maximums, besides nickel (35.0%) and chromium (23.0%). Check these lower limits on the certificate, because a heat that meets every maximum but falls short on niobium or nitrogen does not conform to ASTM B407.
