Chemical and Petrochemical Process Lines
Acid and process lines in chemical and petrochemical plants run on grade 317 where sulfuric, acetic or formic acid streams need more molybdenum than 316 supplies.
ASTM A312 / ASME SA-312 / UNS S31700 / W.Nr. 1.4449
From its Ban Bueng, Chonburi plant in Thailand, Thaida Stainless Steel Manufacturing (Thailand) Co., Ltd. supplies ASTM A312 TP317 stainless steel seamless pipes built for process lines that carry chlorides, halides and sulfurous or acid media. Grade 317, designated UNS S31700 and W.Nr. 1.4449, is the higher-molybdenum step above 316 in our seamless stainless steel pipe range. Our office in Bang Phli, Samut Prakan, prepares the quotation and export documents for every order.

EN 10204 3.1 certificate / 3.2 on request
Production limits, end preparations and delivery condition for grade 317 are listed below. Quote NPS and schedule or OD and wall from your line list, and the offer confirms the matching size.
For exchanger bundles and instrument lines, our stainless steel 317 seamless tubes are ordered by exact OD and wall instead of NPS and schedule.
Every ASTM A312 stainless steel 317 seamless pipe we release also meets ASME SA-312, the ASME counterpart of the same specification. A312 defines seamless pipe as produced with no welding at any stage, fixes the TP317 chemistry and tensile minimums, and bases standard dimensions on ASME B36.19, while other OD and wall combinations are produced when every remaining A312 requirement is met. Pipe may be hot or cold finished, and passivation is applied on request.
Heat chemistry, lot tension results and the pressure or electric test record are combined on an EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) material test certificate. Following A312, we tension test every lot, carry out the flattening test and give every length either a hydrostatic test or a nondestructive electric test, with product analysis added on request. Alongside it we can provide the raw material certificate, heat treatment charts, a 100% PMI record, a surface roughness and size report and a laboratory test certificate from a government-approved lab, and third-party inspection is available on request.
Molybdenum is the main difference from 316: 3.0 to 4.0% in TP317 against 2.00 to 3.00%, carried with 18.0 to 20.0% chromium and 11.0 to 15.0% nickel. Carbon is limited to 0.08%, and A312 sets no nitrogen requirement for this grade.
The heat analysis on the certificate of each seamless 1.4449 stainless steel pipe is checked against these ASTM A312 / ASME SA-312 limits:
UNS S31700317
| Element | TP317 Limit (%) |
|---|---|
| C (Carbon) | 0.08 max |
| Mn (Manganese) | 2.00 max |
| P (Phosphorus) | 0.045 max |
| S (Sulfur) | 0.030 max |
| Si (Silicon) | 1.00 max |
| Cr (Chromium) | 18.0 to 20.0 |
| Ni (Nickel) | 11.0 to 15.0 |
| Mo (Molybdenum) | 3.0 to 4.0 |
TP317 shares its ASTM A312 tensile and yield minimums with TP316 and TP317L, so the extra alloy adds corrosion resistance rather than strength. Actual results from the lot tension test are reported on the certificate for each UNS S31700 seamless pipe, and A312 sets no hardness requirement for pipe.
| Property | Value | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| Tensile Strength, min | 515 (75) | MPa (ksi) |
| Yield Strength, min | 205 (30) | MPa (ksi) |
| Elongation, min, longitudinal | 35 | % |
| Elongation, min, transverse | 25 | % |
Stainless steel 317 is identified by these numbers in American, European, Japanese and Chinese standards.
Drawings that call up 1.4449 or SUS317 are quoted and supplied as ASTM A312 TP317 (UNS S31700).
For grade 317 we cover ODs of 6 mm to 1016 mm and walls of 1 mm to 65 mm, cut to lengths of up to 18 m. Sizes follow ASME B36.19M by NPS and schedule, or your drawing OD and wall; definite cut lengths are held to no minus and at most 6 mm (1/4 in.) over.
Sch 10S, 40S and 80S nominal walls in mm for five NPS sizes, as listed in ASTM A312:
| NPS | OD (in.) | OD (mm) | Sch 10S | Sch 40S | Sch 80S |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1-1/4 | 1.660 | 42.2 | 2.77 | 3.56 | 4.85 |
| 2-1/2 | 2.875 | 73.0 | 3.05 | 5.16 | 7.01 |
| 3-1/2 | 4.000 | 101.6 | 3.05 | 5.74 | 8.08 |
| 6 | 6.625 | 168.3 | 3.40 | 7.11 | 10.97 |
| 18 | 18.000 | 457 | 4.78 | 9.53 | 12.70 |

Threads need the Sch 40S wall or heavier: A312 records that the thinner 5S and 10S walls do not permit threading.
ASTM A312 limits the wall to these deviations from nominal:
| NPS | Wall / OD Ratio (t/D) | Wall Tolerance |
|---|---|---|
| 1/8 to 2-1/2 | All | +20.0% / -12.5% |
| 3 to 18 | Up to 5% | +22.5% / -12.5% |
| 3 to 18 | Over 5% | +15.0% / -12.5% |
| 20 and larger | Up to 5% | +22.5% / -12.5% |
| 20 and larger | Over 5% | +15.0% / -12.5% |
OD limits applied to A312 pipe, by size band:
| DN | NPS | OD Tolerance (mm) |
|---|---|---|
| 6 to 40 | 1/8 to 1-1/2 | +0.4 / -0.8 |
| Over 40 to 100 | Over 1-1/2 to 4 | +0.8 / -0.8 |
| Over 100 to 200 | Over 4 to 8 | +1.6 / -0.8 |
| Over 200 to 450 | Over 8 to 18 | +2.4 / -0.8 |
| Over 450 to 650 | Over 18 to 26 | +3.2 / -0.8 |
| Over 650 to 850 | Over 26 to 34 | +4.0 / -0.8 |
| Over 850 to 1200 | Over 34 to 48 | +4.8 / -0.8 |
Grade 317 is the step up from 316 when chlorides, sulfuric acid or sulfurous media are present. Its PREN of approximately 28 to 33 compares with roughly 24 to 26 for stainless steel 316 seamless pipes, and sulfurous acid and kraft pulping liquors are among the main reasons plants move up to 317.
For the same molybdenum range with lower carbon, 317L seamless pipes hold carbon to 0.035% against 0.08% for TP317, with identical tensile and yield minimums. Low carbon reduces the risk of sensitization during welding, so 317L is worth specifying for spools with many field welds that stay in the as-welded condition.
Plants specify 317 stainless steel seamless pipe for acid, pulp mill, scrubber, seawater-side and hygienic process piping.

Acid and process lines in chemical and petrochemical plants run on grade 317 where sulfuric, acetic or formic acid streams need more molybdenum than 316 supplies.

Sulfuric acid plant piping and phosphoric acid and fertilizer process lines use seamless S31700 stainless steel pipe, ordered by NPS and schedule and delivered solution annealed for full corrosion resistance.

Kraft pulp mills route sulfurous liquors through grade 317 digester, evaporator and washer piping, with spool sizes taken from the mill's piping isometrics.

In power generation, FGD scrubber lines face chlorides and sulfurous media together, so plants specify seamless WNR 1.4449 pipe for scrubber piping and for spools fabricated to the line class.

Brine and seawater-side piping in desalination plants carries chloride levels that call for the 3.0 to 4.0% molybdenum of grade 317, with beveled ends ready for butt welding on site.

Liquid processing and sterile transfer lines in food, beverage, pharmaceutical and biotechnology plants use grade 317, supplied bright annealed or polished for cleanable product-contact surfaces.

ASTM A312 TP317 stainless steel seamless pipe is indicatively priced at USD 5 to 8.5 per kg. With 3.0 to 4.0% molybdenum, the grade follows molybdenum prices more closely than 316, and because 317 is made in smaller volumes, lot size and mill availability move the figure too. The final price of stainless steel 317 seamless pipes depends on OD, wall, length, finish and any added tests, and a priced offer follows your size list.

Piercing, finishing and solution annealing of each SS 317 seamless pipe take place at our factory at 154 Moo.1 Map Phai, Ban Bueng, Chonburi 20170, Thailand. Order acknowledgments and shipping papers come from our office at 89/18 Moo.15 Enterprize Park, Bangna-Trad Road, Bang Kaeo, Bang Phli, Samut Prakan 10540, Thailand. Grade 317 orders reach sites across Thailand and export customers in Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines and India.
Yes, where 316 is close to its limit, for example where chlorides have already pitted an existing 316 line. Where 316 performs well, it remains the lower-cost grade. Send the media, concentration and temperature with your line list, and we confirm whether the upgrade is justified.
Yes. ASTM A312 also sets chromium at 18.0 to 20.0% for TP317 against 16.0 to 18.0% for TP316, and nickel at 11.0 to 15.0% against 10.0 to 14.0%. Carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur and silicon limits are identical, so the corrosion gain comes from chromium, nickel and molybdenum together.
Yes. Offshore platforms and refineries use grade 317 for process piping exposed to seawater and mildly sour streams. List the chloride level, H2S content and temperature on your inquiry, and we confirm whether a seamless 1.4449 stainless steel pipe suits the duty.
NPS 10 falls in the over 8 to 18 band, so the OD may run 2.4 mm over or 0.8 mm under. The wall may be 12.5% under nominal and up to 22.5% over when it is no more than 5% of the OD, or 15.0% over on heavier walls.
No. Grain size limits in A312 apply only to the grades named in its Table 5, a list that excludes TP317. If your project specification still asks for a grain size check on an ASTM A312 stainless steel 317 seamless pipe order, name it on the inquiry and we report the result with the other mill tests.
Yes. ASTM A312 provides a product analysis when you request it, and Supplementary Requirement S1 writes it into the order. The result is reported beside the heat analysis on the EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) certificate. To add an intergranular corrosion check, name S7, the ASTM A262 Practice E test, on the same order.
