Caustic Soda Evaporators
Chlor-alkali plants use the tube in caustic soda production, where evaporator bundles concentrate sodium hydroxide and other alkalies, and the annealed or stress-relieved lengths are cut to the bundle drawing.
ASTM B163 / ASME SB-163 / UNS N02200 / W.Nr. 2.4066
In Ban Bueng, Chonburi, Thaida Stainless Steel Manufacturing (Thailand) Co., Ltd. manufactures Nickel 200 seamless tubes for condensers and heat exchangers in commercially pure nickel, 99.0% nickel minimum, designated UNS N02200 and W.Nr. 2.4066. The tubes are made to ASTM B163 / ASME SB-163 and delivered annealed, stress-relieved, or stress-relieved with annealed ends. They belong to our nickel alloy seamless tubes range, and our office in Bang Phli, Samut Prakan handles drawings, orders and certificates.

EN 10204 3.1 certificate / 3.2 on request
An ASTM B163 Nickel 200 seamless tube for a condenser or heat exchanger is defined by its outside diameter, one wall value and its condition. The table shows how we quote each item and the range our plant produces.
ASTM B163, the Standard Specification for Seamless Nickel and Nickel Alloy Condenser and Heat-Exchanger Tubes, lists nickel UNS N02200 in the annealed or stress-relieved condition. ASME SB-163 is the related specification for Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code applications, so an ASME SB-163 UNS N02200 seamless tube is ordered against the same UNS number, the designation used on the certificate, while Nickel 200 stays the commercial name. ASTM B161 also covers seamless tube in this grade and is the standard of our Nickel 200 seamless pipes for process lines, whereas every chemical, mechanical, test and tolerance figure that follows is an ASTM B163 value.
Every tube is subjected to either a hydrostatic test or a nondestructive electric test, at the manufacturer's option unless the purchase order names one. The hydrostatic test uses 1000 psi (6.9 MPa), unless the allowable fiber stress for the condition limits the pressure, and the tube must show no evidence of leakage; the electric test is eddy current or ultrasonic examination. Each lot also receives one chemical analysis, one tension test and a flare test on sampled lengths. ASTM B163 calls for a certification and test report when the order specifies them, and we issue an EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) certificate; third-party inspection is available on request.
Table 1 of ASTM B163 sets seven limits for UNS N02200. Nickel is a minimum of 99.0%, determined arithmetically by difference, and the other six are maximums. Carbon, at 0.15%, is the entry that separates this grade from the low-carbon nickel of our Nickel 201 seamless tubes; every other limit is identical for the two grades.
UNS N02200200
| Element | Limit per ASTM B163 / ASME SB-163 (%) |
|---|---|
| Ni (Nickel) | 99.0 min |
| Cu (Copper) | 0.25 max |
| Fe (Iron) | 0.40 max |
| Mn (Manganese) | 0.35 max |
| C (Carbon) | 0.15 max |
| Si (Silicon) | 0.35 max |
| S (Sulfur) | 0.01 max |
Elements without a listed limit need not be determined or reported. Under ASTM B163 a product (check) analysis is wholly the responsibility of the purchaser, so the certificate reports the heat analysis against the rows above.
Table 3 of ASTM B163 sets one row of minimums for each condition of UNS N02200, with no split by outside diameter, and the tension test is made once per lot.
| Condition | Tensile Strength, min, ksi (MPa) | Yield Strength (0.2% offset), min, ksi (MPa) | Elongation in 2 in. or 50 mm (or 4D), min (%) | Rockwell Hardness of Annealed Ends |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Annealed | 55 (379) | 15 (103) | 40 | Not applicable |
| Stress-relieved | 65 (448) | 40 (276) | 15 | B65 max |

Stress relieving raises the yield minimum from 15 ksi (103 MPa) to 40 ksi (276 MPa) while the elongation minimum falls from 40% to 15%. That is why every line of a seamless nickel alloy 200 tube order names its condition. The hardness column applies only to the annealed ends of stress-relieved tubing.
Besides the two conditions in its Table 2, ASTM B163 describes a third supply form in its appendix: stress-relieved tube with annealed ends. An Alloy 200 seamless tube ordered this way needs two extra entries on the order, the length to be annealed and whether one end or both. The tension test, and the hydrostatic test where that test is used, are made before the ends are annealed, and the annealed ends are then held to the B65 hardness limit.
Seamless Nickel 200 tube made to ASTM B163 is flare tested on one end of 1% of the finished tube lengths in each lot, and on one tube where a lot has fewer than 100. A tool with a 60-degree included angle expands the end until the specified outside diameter has grown by 30%, and the flared end must show no cracking through the wall.
For chemical analysis a lot is one heat. For mechanical properties, hardness and flaring it is all material of the same heat, nominal size (except length) and condition, and material from an unidentified heat is grouped in lots of not more than 500 lb (230 kg).
Drawings from Europe, Japan and the UK may call Nickel 200 by their own designations. ASTM B163 identifies the material by its UNS number alone, so the other entries serve as cross-references.
A tube list written as W.Nr. 2.4066 or Ni 99.2 is quoted and supplied as UNS N02200 seamless tube, the designation shown on our certificate.
Seamless WNR 2.4066 tube is produced from 6 mm to 457 mm OD with walls from 1 mm to 65 mm, in lengths up to 22 m. Each item is ordered by outside diameter, a minimum or an average wall stated as a dimension rather than a gage number, and length, and U-bent or coiled tubes can be added as order options under the supplementary requirements of ASTM B163.
For tube from 1/2 in. (12.7 mm) to 3 in. (76.2 mm) OD, Table 4 of ASTM B163 gives these permitted variations:
| Nominal OD, in. (mm) | OD Tolerance, in. (mm) | Average Wall (%) | Minimum Wall (%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1/2 to 5/8 (12.7 to 15.9), excl. | +0.005 (0.13) / 0 | ±12.5 | +25.0 / 0 |
| 5/8 to 1 1/2 (15.9 to 38.1), incl. | ±0.005 (0.13) | ±10.0 | +20.0 / 0 |
| Over 1 1/2 to 3 (38.1 to 76.2), incl. | ±0.010 (0.25) | ±10.0 | +22.0 / 0 |

Wall basis: the wall tolerance applies to the wall as ordered, minimum or average, but not to both.
Eccentricity: the wall may not vary by more than ±10% of the measured average wall of that section.
Ovality: individual OD measurements include ovality; on thin-wall tube, with a wall of 3% of OD or less, the mean OD must meet the table and individual readings may reach the table values increased by 1/2% of nominal OD.
Length: specified lengths may run over by 1/8 in. (3.2 mm), or by 1/4 in. (6.4 mm) for lengths over 30 ft (9.1 m).
Straightness: tubes are reasonably straight and free of bends or kinks.
Tolerances for sizes outside the table, including heavier walls, are confirmed with the quotation. ASTM B163 places UNS N02200, low-carbon UNS N02201 and the nickel-copper alloy UNS N04400 in one tolerance group, and the last of these is available from us as Monel 400 seamless tubes.
Seamless 2.4066 nickel tube serves heat transfer and process duty with caustic alkalis such as sodium hydroxide, neutral and reducing media, neutral salt solutions, de-aerated acids, and dry chlorine and hydrogen chloride.

Chlor-alkali plants use the tube in caustic soda production, where evaporator bundles concentrate sodium hydroxide and other alkalies, and the annealed or stress-relieved lengths are cut to the bundle drawing.

Chemical plants fit the tube in process heat exchangers where the shell or tube side carries alkaline liquors or neutral salts, and each length is pressure tested or electrically examined before it leaves the mill.

Desalination plants and marine systems install the grade in heat exchangers and condensers, including units that run on high-velocity seawater, as well as in the desalination piping connected to them.

Refining units run their alkali handling systems and chemical injection lines in this tube, ordering each size by outside diameter and minimum wall to match the design of the line.

Power generation plants specify the tube for steam generators and condensers, in straight lengths up to 22 m or as U-bent tubes laid out to the shell drawing.

Food processing plants use the grade in lines handling fatty acids and fruit juices and in heat exchangers for alkaline service, and every item states its condition, wall basis and length on the order.

Seamless Nickel 200 tube is indicatively priced at USD 25 to 60 per kg. Because the alloy is commercially pure nickel, quotations move with the nickel market. Where an order sits in the range depends on outside diameter and wall, tolerance requirements, condition, cut lengths and the quantity per size; send the tube list for a firm figure.
Indicative only. Send your sizes and specification to Thaida for a firm quotation.

Choose one: ASTM B163 applies its wall tolerance only to the wall as ordered. On 5/8 to 1 1/2 in. (15.9 to 38.1 mm) OD, an average wall may vary ±10.0%, while a minimum wall may run up to 20.0% over and never under. Order minimum wall when no tube may be thinner than the figure on your drawing.
No, the two work together. Every tube is still hydrostatically tested or electrically examined along its full length, while the flare test is a sampling test on part of each lot that shows whether a tube end expands without cracking through the wall. ASTM B163 requires both.
Rockwell B65 maximum, or an equivalent hardness value. ASTM B163 has the hardness test made on 3% of each lot of tubes with annealed ends, so the result appears on the certificate only when annealed ends are ordered. On walls under 0.050 in. (1.27 mm), the Rockwell superficial or Vickers test is suggested instead of the standard Rockwell test.
Yes, as supplementary requirement S1 of ASTM B163, which applies when the order invokes it and covers UNS N02200 annealed or stress-relieved within the Table 5 sizes, up to 1 in. (25.4 mm) OD. A hydrostatic test after bending, when specified, is held at least 5 seconds. Send the bend schedule with each row's radius and leg length.
The strength minimums drop: ASTM B163 sets 50 ksi (345 MPa) tensile and 12 ksi (83 MPa) yield for the annealed low-carbon grade, against 55 ksi (379 MPa) and 15 ksi (103 MPa), and a B62 rather than B65 limit on annealed ends. The chemistry differs only in carbon, 0.02% maximum against 0.15%, and elongation minimums are the same.
ASTM B163 calls for a manufacturer's certification and a report of test results when the order specifies them. We issue an EN 10204 3.1 (3.2 on request) certificate for each ASME SB-163 UNS N02200 seamless tube order, reporting heat chemistry, the lot tension and flare results, the hydrostatic or electric test and, where ordered, annealed-end hardness.
The UNS number or alloy name, ASTM B163, outside diameter, minimum or average wall as a dimension rather than a gage number, length, condition and, for annealed ends, the annealed length and which ends, plus the number of tubes. Add any supplementary requirement, the test you want if the choice matters, and the inspections you plan to witness.
